Canon 5DIII - How to control off camera flash output?

Hi all,

Just wondering if there is something I am missing in terms of being able to control the output of a flash (in manual) off-camera?

Am I right in thinking the only option I have is Pocket Wizards?

What I want is High Speed Sync and full remote control of the flash power output from my camera

pixel kings are cheaper than pocket wizards

Then there is the phottix Odin system

also yongnuo Yn-622c are similar to the pixel kings ....

Phottix Odin works really well for me. Amazing system.

I first bough YN and returned it after three days. To much faffing around trying to adjust things through your camera if time is of essence.

I know Odin is more expensive but it really works great.

If you have two flashes you may want to use one in Master and one in Slave mode to control the off camera flash.
 
I don't find the faffing too bad on the 622, though I was used to the previous optical control UI of Canons system. TTL and exposure compensation is very fast if that is the way you roll.

The focus assist of the 622 is a great reason to get them as well. Reception focusing is now a doddle.

How do you mean? Can you use the focus assist without actually firing a flash?

I like the sound of both the phottix and yongnuo system but the price of the yongnuo is a lot more attractive
 
I agree with Kris about the AF assist which is quite handy and it is something that Odins will hopefully implement in their next lineup of triggers.
However, will have to agree to differ when it comes to really quickly adjusting settings.

Nick, shame you live such a long way from me as I would happily meet up and show you Odins in action.

Every system has got its unique feature that others lack. It is really how you use your flash that will determine which one you will go for.

I really like the look of the Phottix system, but its just the price putting me off. Ideally, Id be wanting to be able to control two off camera flashes (although 95% of the time I work with just one OCF, there are times I may want another) and for this configuration it gets really pricey at over £350.

The Yongnuo's on the other hand for the same set up would be around £120 tops

I think for me, the Yongnuo's present a better value for money, as I generally only use OCF occasionally, and when I do, its usually fairly simple with just one light etc.

Thank you for your help and offer of meeting up if we were nearer :)

You can 'piggy-back' the 603's on the 622C units with no problem.

Yep, as a dumb trigger though, it's another feature that the 622s have over the odins and others.

You can stick anything on top, even a Pez dispenser to attract the kids.

They are cracking triggers. Admittedly, the Odins have a faster interface, but the button presses to get to flash menu get faster every time and I can get to them lightning quick. TTL FEC is even faster.

The focus assist can be used at any time, even if you are just trying to focus in the dark and are not firing external flashguns.

don't think i could live without my 622c's. i even talked my dad into getting some probably going to order some more soon for the price you cant go wrong. anyone with a flash. these are a must in peoples camera bags :)
