Hi,

Hoping someone can help with a bit of a flash issue. Just got a 50 AF-1 to use with my Canon 5D but it wont fire? Cameras set to fire flash in custom settings, flash symbol appears in the viewfinder, flash picks up aperture and focal length. Annoyingly there doesnt appear to be a test button on the flash itself.

It just wont fire when I press the shutter? However the camera seems to underexpose as if it is firing?

Any suggestions much appreciated, thanks

Couple of quick checks - when you turn the flash on the right hand button should illuminate green when it is charged up. If you press the button it will test fire. If it illuminates but doesn't fire then it suggests the flash tube could have blown or is faulty.

Assuming it charges and test fires my next port of call would be the hotshoe contact on your camera and flash. It may be worth giving the contacts on both a good clean and when you attach the flash make sure it's properly mounted.

Does the camera fire other flashes? If possible try another flash, preferably one that you know is working fine. If this fires then it points to a flash problem. The fact that the flash is receiving the aperture and focal length values suggests that there is some sort of connection between the two.

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the reply, button lights up green, when I press it no fire. I can hear the buzzing of the charge so Im guessing its the tube.

Many Thanks for the diagnosis, will send in for a warranty repair.
