Canon 5D3 "Meike Battery Grip" Problems. Can any owners advise?

Hi Guys,
Took a chance on a Mieke MK2 battery grip for my 5D3 as owners on here say its identical to the original and since my mate has a genuine one, we are going to compare its quality to his.

However - its arrived today and whilst its fit, build quality and function are pretty much beyond reproach, it has a confusing issue off the bat.

If I put a battery in the slot nearest the left hand side of the body, it registers the usual.

  • LP-E6
  • Power in percentage
  • Shutter count
  • Serial Number
  • Recharge Performance
However - If I put the same battery in the other slot, while the camera powers up no problem, it doesn't allow any of that info and just calls the battery a confusing "BGM-E6"
For reference, I have 2x original Canon batteries (One from my 7D and one from my 5D3 so deffo genuine) and 1x Dot.Foto I bought recently that works just fine and registered to teh camera no problem.
All exhibit the exact same problem in this grips slot number 2.

Any ideas folks?

Yes, it does matter, otherwise how will you know if the batteries you have fitted are both charged up, dead, great, dying etc?
No point having twice the capacity available, then filling it with one good and one bad battery.

Also, when the 5D3 is telling me I have 20% battery life left! how do I know which one it's referring to? Is it one, the other, or both? They report separately for good reason.

Also, the genuine grip reports both separately so this one should too.
 
Just checked on my Meike grip on my 5D3 and both sides report the same when I put the same battery in both sides. I've checked with both batteries (both Canon) in the grip and they both report correctly. TBH it's not something I'd checked before now but it might be worth just checking the connections in the right side of the grip to see if there's something obviously wrong. If not then it might be worth returning it for another.

I've had my Meike grip for around 6 months now and it's a superb bit of kit. Never had any problems with it, I've mounted the camera and a 24-70 f2.8 lens on the tripod mount for long periods with no problems (so it's certainly not a weak spot compared with a genuine grip) and the joystick and other buttons have the same feel as the camera ones. I've got a genuine grip on my 70D and there doesn't seem to be any difference in build quality between the two. Had there been a Meike grip out for the 70D when I got mine I would of had one in a flash. I've had Meike grips on all the bodies I've had apart from the 70D which is 5 crop bodies and a 5D2 and 5D3 and not had any problems with any of them.

I have one for the 700d and had to resolder the connections in the battery holder to get it to do anything. Mayne a mis connected link?
 
Apologies for reviving a dead thread but thought it'd be better that, than starting a new thread.

I've just bought a new 5D iii and got a Meike grip to go along with it, it's the one without the LCD screen built into it.

When I connect it to the camera, I get absolutely no power whatsoever, I am using only one battery (the original) as I'm waiting on others coming in the post but shouldn't this work with just the one battery?

Both the camera and the grip are set to on, so that's not it :confused:
