Hi Guys

I was shooting this morning having swapped the 70-200 onto my 5D2 and taken a few shots while using Live View. When I was reviewing the images, the camera locked up and I received an " Err 80 " message on the top LCD panel. The last shot was permanently displayed on the rear LCD. Turning the switch off made no difference.

Fortunately I managed to speak to an expert from Jacob's on Oxford St by phone and he advised me to turn the switch to the off position and remove the battery. I was concerned that the images on the card may have been corrupted but he assured me that this was unlikely. Then after refitting the battery grip and turning the switch back to On, the camera worked fine again. I was also recommended to have the 5D2 checked out.

I wonder if anyone had experienced a similar problem. I'm certainly getting the camera checked out by Canon and am so grateful that Chris of Jacob's was on hand to help out. Kudos to those guys. I was glad they were on hand with good and much-needed advice.

Cheers

I have had this problem with my 5D when shooting in bursts , I bought a battery grip with the advice of Wildings and it has not happerned since , I put it down to the battery running low on power .

Could be friend but my grip was on 1/2 charge which approximates to one full single LP-E6.

Looking at the manual, it does say that an Err 80 ought to be investigated by a repair center.

Cheers

I'd get it looked at then, esp if it's under warrenty

And a def  to Jacobs for the hlp over the phone

Thats good news it's in warrenty, hopefully you'll get it back soon and it'll be trouble free - I seem to remember Canon also give 6months warrenty on any work done.

Just an update as a matter of interest.

I've heard from Canon this morning that they have identified the problem to a micro processor and have changed the main board under warranty. That was a two-day turnaround. They're testing and cleaning the camera at the moment and it should be ready sometime this afternoon.

Thanks Canon. That was pretty impressive

Nice to hear something positive of the service centre :) Both times I've used them, they have been professional and very courteous.

Good result. How many of us would have put that down to a one off and ignored it, until it broke outside warranty.

Well Guys

The story wasn't over as the grip developed a fault when the technician was testing it. So that's being fixed too and will be ready by tomorrow. Guess I'll have a fully overhauled unit as a result of this visit to Elstree. Canon's testing procedure does give me much encouragement and confidence as Error 80 was a communications problem and it looks like they've traced it to the source and are rectifying it.

Once again more stars to Canon UK

Thanks for reading pals

I had a failure on my 40D (well out of warranty) two weeks and sent it into Canon through my CPS membership. Got an initial advice ofa fixed price repair so sent off my card details. Then a couple of hours later got a phone call to say they were repairng as goodwill.

Returned inside five working days and was also asked if I needed a loaner while they had it.

That is what I call excellent service.
