Canon 5D2 and 24-105 making strange noise ?

OK so i have been missing from here for sometime but I'm back now, I have taken my camera out of the cupboard at last and i have an issue....

Just went to take a shot, back focus and it just starts making a horrible noise...hard to explain but sounds like a printer and wouldn't stop until i turned the camera off

any ideas ?

First is the battery fully charged.

is the noise coming from the camera or the lens ?

the lens could be the focus motor try switching to manual focus to see if the noise stops or it could be the IS switch that off to see if it makes a difference

in the camera most of the moving parts are to do with the mirror and shutter but that can easily be eliminated using a different lens
