I'm thinking of moving over to the dark side and getting a Canon.
I've been looking at the 5D. Is this a good choice for weddings, portraits n general use?
I've also been reading lots of rumours that the 5D II is likely to be coming out this year. Would this put you off purchasing a 5D now or would you wait for the new 5D II (if it even exists).

also, what makes the 5D better than the 40D?

Full frame!

Unless you are willing to shell out for a 1Ds then a 5D is fabulous for weddings and portrait.

Have a look at some reviews on the web.

so how much better is full frame to say a 1.5 crop?

All the reviews look good for this camera, my major concern is that it may be superceeded in a few months.

The setup i'm looking at is the Canon EOS 5D with 24-105mm L IS USM Lens for £1779 from warehouse express.

it will most likely be superceded, but that doesnt change what the camera is. the successor will be a lot more expensive though.

You are already on the dark side:)

Don't follow the light.

Seriously, Just use whats best for the job.

It's wrong to think of which is 'better' in terms of full or crop sensor. Crop sensors excel with long lenses, whereas full frame has big advantages in landscape, portrait, studio type work, giving high quality images which will yield very large prints if necessary. Probably the ideal situation is two bodies- a crop sensor body for use with long lenses and a full frame body for other stuff.

Rumours are rife about the 5D replacement, but it's sure to happen fairly soon, as the 5D is well due for a revamp. The current 5D is a bargain now though. ;)

As well as allowing you to use lenses at their "true" focal length, the full-frame sensor really scores with IQ, especially at high ISOs. The 5D is renowned for rich colours and generally film-like IQ. The results you get at ISO 800 look great - try this on a compact or high crop-factor DSLR and you'll get a ton of noise.

The 5D won't take EF-S lenses, and the lenses you do use on it will need to be good. The large sensor will show up any chromatic aberration and edge distortion.

I bought a 5D a few weeks ago - my first DSLR. The full-frame sensor and IQ persuaded me to move over from film - I'd recently read a photo supplement in The Guardian where one of the pro contributors was raving about using the 5D to shoot landscapes. I wouldn't let the 5D mk II put you off - the original 5D is still a fantastic camera, and you can get some amazing deals right now. I would guess you won't have much change left over from £2k when the mk II hits the shops.

I love my 5D with 100-400 and the price is dropping,
Jim

Me and my other half both bought 5D’s about 3 months ago, with a 24/105 L and a 16-35 L we moved up from a 350D and a 400D. We decided that one day we would move to 1D’s and that we would only be able to use EF lens so as we decided to go full sensor with the 5D and get the lenses we wanted now. We have taken about 3000 photographs each since we went 5D and are really very very happy with the results. We have visited a number of places we had taken a range of shots at with our old camera's so we have something to compare our new shots with.

Had 3 5D's a got shut of them all, once you have used a 1 series body you will never go back.

Image Quality. :)

Right .... what we're all looking for then ....

I know this is a tangent, but the delivery man has just brought me a new toy. A Gitzo GT2531EX (just trips off the tongue, doesn't it?) - replacement for my Benbo trekker.

It's funny but I'm more excited about a new tripod than any new camera or lens ....

Jezies, somone else was talking about having had three 5Ds the other day...

Do people buy them in packs of 10 or something?

I was feeling chuffed with just having the one :)

Nope that's money well spent.

Been in the rather unusual position this week of processing images from a 5D, 40D, 1D MkII and a 1D MkIII, all fitted with 70-200 F2.8IS. In terms of image quality there's really nothing to choose between them. Ignoring weather sealing the FOV then becomes the issue and if you want your wide angles to be wide angle it's got to be the 5D.

It's a beautiful looking piece of equipment and seems amazingly stable. It has a tiny screw in the top of the central column which stops the tripod head from rotating when it's in use. That's it's main new feature over the 2530 apparently.

Better do some work now..... Well lunch anyway.....;)
