Hi

I have been using my Canon 5d for the last couple of years but have been offered a deal with Nikon D2X

Has anyone got any experience of the two and can compare please

I can't compare sorry. But I have also been shooting a 5D since they came out. Why do you want to change. Read the reports and decide which direction your photography is going. What you buy today is history tomorrow.
 
I've got no experience with either, but do you want to drop down from a full frame sensor to a APS-C sized one (1.5x)? After all the D700 has just come out. Saying that the used prices of both the 5D and the D2X are very similar and for that you would get a pro spec camera. Also you will need to change you lenses, flash etc.. Do you really want to change a whole system or is it that you have a couple of lenses etc. and really won't loose a lot in that respect? D2X cameras are dropping in price, especially as the D700 has come out now - one shop even has a used D2Xs at a quid under a grand and my local one has a very nice one for £1200 with D2x bodies going from £799 upwards at Ffordes.

If your happy with the gasfire Cannon, then stick with it. I'm after a D2x when I get rid of of my Blad kit - but then again it's to upgrade from a D1x so I won't need to change systems etc.

Also, worth noting is do you do more landscape stuff or pics that need a telephoto? The latter might benefit from the APS-C sensor the former from the full frame one.
 
Just had a thought... if you don't mind the drop to a smaller sensor (not saying there's anything wrong with the smaller sensor as that's what I have) then why not go for an EOS 1D MKII? You can use you original lenses etc, then.

I think 'dpreview' compare these two. If you look for the review for the 5D it compares it to other cameras later. I use the 5D and Nikon D300 (is the D300 comparable to image quality of the D2x??). The 5D has higher quality in my opinion. I wouldn't swap it for a D2x.
 
Hate to say this, but pro reviewer Bjørn Rørslett has put the D2X and 5D to a battery of tests, including just about every parameter possible, and his conclusion, surprisingly, is that the D2X crop sensor out-performs the 5D's full frame sensor in just about every department, including image quality.

It is one of the most interesting reviews that I have ever seen. Read through the review until you come to the D2X/5D comparisons. He offers empirical, photographic evidence for most of his assertions. I have to admit that I was surprised too! This article is one of the reasons that I am buying a D2X....... for I have become a Darksider:suspect:

It won't wrestle my old Nikon AIS primes :love: anything like as well though, and I really can't afford to replace all the kit that were nicked.:'(
 
Are you sure about that? I think I'd be popping along to Jessops and trying someof your glass on a D300 beofre buying what is essential old technology for the same money (or more!)
 
Difficult choice, both old technology but, after reading dpreview, are fairly equal performers apparently. With the D2x you get a very professional build but at a cost of 13 ounces extra in weight, and a slightly deeper body. If you need a heavy duty pro body built to withstand the conditions, the D2X is a good choice, otherwise....
For me personally, weight is an issue, coupled to everything else I cart around for several hours at times.
 
If you want to shoot ISO100 for landscape, the D2X.

If you want to go over ISO400 much, the D2X is dire.

Make the decision on what you want to shoot :)

I concur. God awful at higher ISO and thats a fact. The 5D destroys it.
