Canon 5D Screen Issues

So I have heard about the early 5D screens being a bit iffy and to be on the safe side, get one with a serial number starting with at least 2 but I'm just wondering if it should be a deal breaker and from what year they are likely to be ok because often the ads include the age but never the serial number and I'm not always able to find the info out in time before it gets sold.

Mine has a serial starting with 2, so I cant tell you about earlier ones.

I can tell you it's not a brilliant screen if you want to look on the back and see the colours, highlights and shadows you've captured with any accuracy. It will tell you all the things you need to know though and it's a great camera. In fact there is nothing on the market now that has the blend of assets a 5D MK1 does.
 
I have heard that and expected mine to fall apart generally within months the first time I handled it. It doesn't feel as solid as the bodies I was used to hefting but four years of hard labour later, it's never so much as missed a beat. I really can't fault mine in any way.

Well, other than canon not putting a mirror lock up button on it but that's another rant.....
 
My 5D serial number starts with a 0, so it is a early one. I brought it second hand, not sure how many shots it has done, not sure if it has had the mirror modified. It has never missed a beat, and feels like it will keep going forever.

Sorry I don't seem to have explained it very. I had heard the screens had a colour cast and so they improved them in the later models
 
I know that the productions with serial numbers 0********* and 1********* had problem with the off-color LCD, and Canon fixed this problem by using a new version of the LCD, and updated the serial number to 2********* there is also the mirror fixing problem on early models.
I think only the vey latest starting 3********* had mirror fixed.

I sent both my 5d's serial 2********* in for the mirror fix just to be safe as the fix is free. :thumbs:
 
Did they actually do it pre-emptively? I rang the other day and was told they'd only do it if your mirror had actually fallen off.

Who did you get to do it? Canon UK?
 
I did not have any problems but I phoned Canon first and then used A. J. Johnstone in Glasgow with no problems plus you get sensor clean and shutter count. :cool:
 
the image display on a screen is really only useful to check your composition and subjects. The histogram and blinking highlights will tell you everything you need to know about exposure.
 
Cheers everyone for your responses. If anyone has done a comparison of the 2 screens old and and new I would like to know how noticeable the issue is.
