Hi guys,

I am looking at purchasing a Canon 5d mkiii and have noticed digital rev advertising them at £2099. I am a little worried with the warranty issue as I have read that digital rev would cover repairs how ever from what I see it comes with no canon warranty.

Or the second option is go with Calumet, who's store I visited today off oxford street (very helpful) who are selling it for £2319 with the usual canon warranty etc.

What would you do?

On their site digital rev they layout how they propose to deal with any warranty issues, it comes down too do you want too pay £300 to be able to walk into a shop and have them short it for you face to face?

For me that £300 would be going on 50mm or something else , and I'd take my chances with having to send the body away / just straight up pay for any damage, only reservation I have is that I would check it was all ok with an insurer before buying so I was sure I could get cover :)

So if something does go wrong with the camera, does anyone know how I have to resolve the problem with digital rev. Does it involve me sending the camera off to Hong Kong?

It would seem that the majority of buyers have very good service from digital rev and panamoz that ship from HK. it could even be argued that inside the warranty period they are better than the manufacturers in that they seem to replace warranty items as a matter of course.

My concern would be more out of warranty repairs. Canon will repair lenses bought outside the country but not bodies. Whether that is strictly adhered to I don't know but spending that much cash on a body I would be planning on reasonably long term ownership and would want to be able to get any repairs done without hassle.

I will be in the market for a MkIII very shortly myself and I will be buying it from a uk seller that sells uk stock.

Check this out before ordering from DR.

Basically DR's supply chain are giving some of their 5d3's with fake serial numbers that Canon UK wont touch even if u give them £££

There are other companies you might want to consider if you are after the cheapest deal. HDEW and Panamoz both seem to be reputable.

There's a thread in the "talk photography" section on grey imports that's worth a read.

Difficult choice really - and to make life a little more difficult HDEW are doing it for £1879

HDEW have a good following on here - if it was a closer price difference, then personally, I'd be opting for Calumet, but at £450 difference...

I bought mine from Hdew just after it had been released and I was very happy with the service they provided. They have the 5D3 in at £1879 http://www.hdewcameras.co.uk/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-body-961-p.asp with a 3 year warranty. They are based in the UK as well, which should allay some of the warranty fears with buying from HK.

I've also bought from Panamoz as well and the service level there has also been excellent. At the moment you can get the 5D3 for £1771.75 delivered if you take advantage of the 5% discount for bank transfer payment. Delivery is usually 4-5 days and for any warranty work you send the item back to a UK address so there's no major expense sending it to HK.

Looking forward to seeing some shots from it when you get it. In march last year when I got mine it was about a £1000 more expensive but still well worth it even then. It's a fantastic camera and it's quite difficult to take a bad photo from it.
 
What about Hdew, they import them in so they are grey stock but are dispatched from Surrey(might be wrong on this), and if you leave near you can collect from there. I ordered my 7D Tuesday and it arrived yesterday and am extremely happy plus you get a 3 year warranty as well.
It's £1879 body only on a special offer till the 15th JAn
Edit looks like three of us have written near on the same thing :lol:

Yes, panamoz offer 5% off when paid via bank transfer.
You can e-mail them for a quote.
 
Only thing which I wasn't happy about when I bought my 7D from HDEW was that the battery charger was a US style with an integrated plug which requires an adapter for UK use. Being a grey import I did expect this; however I understand other grey importers supply a UK charger. Panamoz is one of these.

if you asked them they would have supplied a uk one which is what i did for my 5d3 anyway
also received a photo copy of manual but after phone they sent me a
orig one

they have been very help full also if you asked them for a vat receipt
even though it is an import canon uk honour the 12 month warranty

And don't forget Ian (Kerso) on here sells the 5D mkIII @ £2095 at the moment and Canon will support repairs / warranty from him.
 
HDEW for me too. They supplied mine for £2259 last summer and when they dropped the price by £70 a couple of days later they refunded me the difference. Three year warranty too.

That was what I was expecting to get with my 7D from HDEW but I did get a UK plug and proper uk manual.

Read the threads about it to make up your own mind, but it went something like:

Bloke buys 5d3 from DR.
Camera develops a fault
DR said they'd cover postage back to them up to £40, but to be correctly insured he is quoted £160. DR won't pay.
Camera goes to Canon UK, who tell customer the serial number on the bottom is not a Canon serial number. They refuse to repair the camera on this basis.
Serial on sticker and EXIF don't match.
Serial number sticker does not look like a Canon one when compared to others from all over the world.
Shutter count found to be higher than shots taken.
DR are informed of the serial number issue, they continue to request the camera is sent to them for repair and they will put a new sticker on whilst its there.
Another owner finds the same scenario (although his camera wasn't faulty).
Eventually the message gets through to DR, they blame a supplier and replace both cameras with ones that appear to have genuine serial numbers.

I shot a tennis tournament last autumn and fired off at least 990 shots, judging from image number subtraction, on a single charge. I don't recall how much battery life I had remaining at the end of shooting, but I stopped because there was nothing more to shoot rather than because the battery was dead. That was with servo AF throughout and OS (Sigma 120-300) disabled.

However, when I went to the BWC a week or two back with a fully charged battery at the start of the day I was down to 69% after something like 82 shots, putting me on target for perhaps 300 shots from one charge at best. Mind you, it was cold that day and there was probably more chimping going on, as well as IS spinning away whilst shooting.

The thread refferred to is still going on the POTN forum and it seems there's been quite a few of these cameras with dodgy serials about.

If I was going to buy a 5D3 now I'd go for either Panamoz or Hdew, I bought from both and the service levels are excellent from both. Panamoz have the best price but Hdew have a better warranty so it depends on how much peace of mind you want and how long you want it for. If Panamoz offered extended warranties then I'd place my order there in a heartbeat.

I've got a 3rd party grip and 3rd party batteries on my 5D3 and I took almost 3000 photos, with IS and AF on, in a day at an airshow. I had to change the batteries in case they failed during the next display but they still had a little power left in them. The 3rd party batteries have lasted at least as well as the Canon originals on both my 5D3 and 7D and cost around £10 each rather than the £50 for the Canon ones. I bought some 3rd party batteries for a 550D when I first started with a dslr around 2 years ago and they are still being used in the wifes 650D now, along with the 3rd party grip that's the same age.

I bought mine from kerso, not very long ago, for under £2k and avoided any issues with it being sent as toy parts worth £1.
Came in two days as he has them in stock. Took longer for the bank to transfer the cash than for Ian to deliver.
 
I purchased my 5D MK3, also a genuine Canon Battery grip and a 100mm 2.8L macro lens from Hdew about a month ago, helpful and polite on the phone, all came perfect, english spec charger, 3 year warranty on the body. Very pleased with products and prices.

I bought a 7d and a 400 5.6 from hdew, a few months later the auto focus went on the lens, under guarantee i contacted Hdew and a very helpful lady told me to post the lens to their chosen repairer (johnsons of Glasgow) it was back a week later and even sharper too, very happy with the service. Tony.,
 
This thread has prompted some interest.
I have never seen any comments on here about canonworld.co.uk whose prices are very low on some products.
They say all their stock is UK and they never deal with any foreign suppliers. Is this true or am I missing something?
 
I haven't received as fantastic service as some of you guys have so far. Little things I know but when spending that sort of money it's a little annoying....

The "Special price" ending on 14th Jan, is just extended every time it reaches the deadline which is frustrating.

Dispatch time is 3-5 working days from when the order is received which has now passed and no sign of the item being dispatched.

As I said, only little things but I thought I would keep you all updated on my transaction so far..... fingers crossed I receive it early next week which will make me a lot happier!
 
Have you tried giving them a ring to find out when it's going to be dispatched. They sent mine on RMSD on a saturday and they paid the extra as they knew I needed it for a shoot on the sunday. I ordered mine on a tuesday and I got it on the saturday. Hopefully the weather wont screw up deliveries too much next week but I'd allow a bit extra time for it, you know what these couriers are like.
 
Given the source of their bodies outside the UK I expect HDEW are at the mercy of exchange rate fluctuations, and as they don't seem to carry high stock levels, and the prices are very keen, I imagine they have to protect themselves against changing costs. You never know - the next price movement might be upward. It's certainly not been a downhill slide all the way since release from the likes of Digital Rev, with the price bouncing around at times.

As for despatch times, I can't answer for that. When I placed my order they were out of stock. I knew that, and money was charged at the time of order due to their Sage Pay setup, but it took about three days before it was winging its way to me. Considering I saved around £500 against the best "UK" prices on Camerapricebuster at the time I'm not complaining.

Give them a bell and see what they say re dispatch, I'm sure they'll be able to help.

With regards to the special price, as has been said they'll be covering themselves and on a positive reflection, at least they give notice of how long the price is going to be at that for you, so you have a little time to think about it. I suppose it could be worse, if the special price had now dropped further, you'd def be fed up...

Not necessarily. Between order and delivery the price dropped for my purchase. I phoned them up to request a refund of the difference and they paid up without resistance. :clap:

Maybe it helped my case that I politely offered the alternative suggestion to return the body under the DSR and re-order at the new price.
