Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Same here. I dont think ive ever shot JPG with any of my DSLRS.

Having looked on the net and have had my MKIII for well over a year you are the first person that seems to have managed this. Even the reviews point this out.
While im not doubting you i wish i could figure it out for myself, although im in the habit of leaving the camera door open anyway.

There are some videos on this Canon website
http://www.learn.usa.canon.com

You can also download them and put them on the camera to watch them if you wanted to.

I suppose Youtube will also have them, the camera has been out for a while now.

EDIT: Here are the 5DMKIII videos
http://www.learn.usa.canon.com/galleries/galleries/tutorials/eos_5d_markiii_tutorials.shtml
They are quite basic though. More showing the features rather than telling you how to use them.

Thanks Dave will take a look, I'm slowly reading thru all of this thread too!

Grey import users, you guys registered your 5D3 with Canon? I think it's about time I done so...I've still not registered my 7D!

No problem, there is a lot to take in to really get the best out of this camera.
One book i can recommend is the Canon 5DMKIII book by Douglas klostermann.
I was lucky in that i had to go in to hospital just after getting my 5DMKIII, to get a kidney stone removed. I put this book and the manual on my ipad and had a really good read over the following two days. These two books really helped me understand what was what, although im still learning even now.

My camera came from HK and it registered fine with canon, but it seems you can make any old number up and register on thier website. This was proven by a mate of mine in a thread over on POTN when it came to light that there were one or two cameras out there with fake serial numbers (as opposed to fake cameras).
This is just on the regular website though, i dont know how CPS works with grey imports.

I started to do some tests with the camera writing L JPEG to a CF card. Even with a 60MB/S Cf card I got to 85 frames without filling the buffer. So I gave up.

Then I discovered that you can take 16270 jpegs continuously if you have the card space!!!!!

Doesn't say what size but that's more than both shutter counts on both my bodies.

I'm really glad I stopped :)

Just been looking at some of Canons other cameras and its got to be a misprint in the specs on their site. Maybe 162

awaiting the delivery of my mk3, time to go full frame and leave the 60d behind :) can't wait.

That's the same move I made, and while it was a good move I found it hard to get rid of my 60D. Indeed it took me a year to get rid of it, and that was just a swap for a 650D. I do like having a crop camera as well, although I won't spend any more money on it.
Lenses for the 5D is another matter though. I found I was suddenly looking at lenses I'd never thought about before. It's never ending.

I have a EF 100-400 L, getting the 5d with a 24-105 L and looking at a 70-200 f2.8

this should cover my shooting for the time being.

60d is a fantastic piece of kit to be fair. I really like it.

if your getting rid of your 70-200 give me an offer.

I find that the 100-400 is sometimes a bit too much, wanting less than 100 more than ever needing more. this is however on a crop sensor, so hoping the full frame will balance this out.

we will see shortly i suppose. mk3 due on Wednesday.

Yeah, that 100-400 is a monster. I have access to one but rarely bother, even when I could do with the extra reach.
I'm sure you are going to love the 5D, it's a real step up from the 60D, especially in features and ergonomics.

I'm not going to do anything with the 70-200 for a few months as I don't have the extra cash for the new lens.
I'll post in here as a heads up when I'm ready.

yeah I want one to take to le mans with me in July, so could tie in if you want to sell.

Had a scare a few nights ago in Hanoi.I thought my camera was broken when I attached the nifty fifty and pressed to shoot and the shutter won't close! I then tried to take off the nifty fifty and it required a bit of force! I then attached my 70 200 to test and all was good.nifty fifty finally dies on me.was a great cheap lens.now will wait for canon or sigma to release new 50mm prime lens!

I had a similar experience with my Tamron 24-70.
I had no errors but the f stop showed 00. Seems like it's just the camera losing contact with the lens.
You might have dirty contacts on the 50mm.

It does look like canon are brining out a new 50mm with IS soon.

So it looks like I have a dust bunny or two  What do you guys do with these? I am extremely reluctant at trying to solve it myself so would rather get it done by someone in the know. I'll be in Barnsley in a few months if anyone from that area knows anyone to take it to?

Ive always cleaned my cameras myself. There really isn't much to it, you just have to get the right gear and nerve.
I use the wet cleaning method and find it works the best. Ive never had any issues.

There is a filter over the sensor so you aren't actually touching the sensor, although it can be nerve wracking the first time you do it.

Strange as no one has ever asked this question before, but my camera seems to understand that my default card is the CF :p

I've put both 1.4 and 2 x converters on my zoom (not at the same time!) and the IQ was still remarkably good, so much so that I might sell my 400 5.6 prime as the 70/200 & 2x isnt that far behind.
I work in Farringdon if you fancy a meet up and borrow the converter to test on your zoom when the days lengthen a bit so there's enough light at say 4pm.

Its been well documented how it doesn't keep the default but in all honesty ive never read of anyone saying it does before.
Maybe you should take your camera to Canon and get it fixed lol.

On p128 of the manual it suggests that it is possible to set a minimum shutter speed in conjunction with auto ISO, but that the minimum is 1/250th second. Something like 1/500 or 1/1000 would be more useful for bird photography.

Is there any way around this?

No, not unless you buy a 1DX ;-)

The new 1DX firmware has had this feature added, along with a few other nice improvements, so there is a chance we might get it on the 5D at some point. I cant see any reason why we cant have it.

Ok, cheers.....not good news then. But it seems such an useful feature to have in comparison with the unnecessary stuff you can do with a 5d3.......

Yeah, very strange omission.
Hopefully we will get it, along with EC in manual mode.

Am looking to join you all when mine arrives in the next couple of days. Really looking forward to it now. :)

Hi Kev

Please don't be too gushing in your praise of the 5Dmk3 over your 7D as I too am considering this move. I'm selling all my old junk on eBay as fast as possible to soften the blow of a body and a 24-105 but not there yet :(

And I hired a 100-400 a couple of weekends a go so want one of those as well now

I'll be very interested to hear your views as you seem to have got the hang of the 7D.

David

Hi Dave, I do like to gush LOL. I love my 7D that's why I will be keeping it. When the light is good it is fantastic. Especially with the 100-400 ;) Took me a while to get the best out of my 7D. Once I'd learnt it's functions & AF I was away. I am currently absorbing any info on the 5D that I can lay my eyes on. Will keep you posted.

gutted. oh well hopefully a parcel tomorrow.

looking for a 70-200 f2.8 now

Thats what im wanting next although i dont know if i should go for a 100-400 instead

Highly recommend the 100-400. Also just got a 70-200 f2.8 MK2 today. Weather is that bad, I can't be bothered to try it out. :(

Please let me know what you think. Im wanting the 70-200 as it wil cover more but cant help thinking the 100-400 will give me better results when the range is needed.

I found that the 100-400 was too much on the 60d (crop sensor), hoping that it'll be ok on the mk3

gonna test it properly and see what I think. I don't know if 200 will be too short on full frame.

plus the F4.5-5.6 on the 100-400 isn't as much of an issue on the mk3 as better sensor and ISO allow faster speeds and at least the same quality.

I find that I get the same noise levels at ISO 1000 on the 60d as 12,000 on the mk3.

The 100-400 on the 7D (Same sensor as the 60D) is fantastic. Never had any issues at all with it at any focal length.

No, sorry never meant there was an issue. Just saying that I found I wanted less than 100 more often than needing more than 400.

So 70-200 would have been fine.

Whilst on the full frame the magnification is roughly 2/3rds when compared to the crop sensor.

So the 100-400 might turn out to be perfect on the full frame and the 70-200 might seem to be too short

I suppose only time will tell.
