5D iii is great for night shot. The hight iso help a lot in the dark. It would be better if 5D iii has the GPS built in as for the 6D.![]()
Why? Wifi would have been good but GPS?
I'd rather have GPS than wifi.
All my shots are geotagged, and as I use multiple camera systems on one shoot I'd still need an external GPS logger running but internal GPS would be ideal for travel stuff.
)I'm just getting to grips with my 5d3 and yesterday I wondered how much time the Canon engineers spent making the shutter sound soooooooo good!
A bit like a boy racer tuning the exhaust on his car (if they do......)
Don't see the point to be honest id like wifi for studio work. I doubt if ever use GPS tagging at all
Ahh I see now. I never do landscape stuff but can see why that works be a benefit! If you work out of a studio then GPS would be no good for you.
If you work on location it is very useful, it allows you to easily tag your shots with the correct location, which makes them more easily searchable, and hence saleable.
LR has mapping built in, which I use to geotag my pics. Alternatively I'll take a shot with the iPhone and use those co-ordinates. I like the idea of GPS, but stories of how badly it affects the battery are worrying.
I joined the 5Dmkiii club on Friday (coming from a Nikon D600 ), and so far I'm pretty impressed, although the muscle memory needs some serious re-training! However I've noticed that the camera tends to under expose quite a lot of the time( I've been using evaluative and center weighted mainly). Is this a Canon thing? I've never noticed any of my Nikons doing this to the same degree.
Thanks for the replies guys. There's a lot to take in moving systems, I guess I just need to get used to how the camera works!
Is this a general thing across Canon bodies, or is it just the mkiii?
I had noticed that my D600 slightly underexposed compared to my D700 but not as much as the Mkiii seems to.
However happily the files have a certain quality that's different (not to say better, my Nikon's made lovely photos ) from the Nikon's. Its hard to put my finger on, but it seems to take less PP to get a file looking how I want it to.
I've never noticed this. Maybe I just underexpose all my images lol.
I have noticed when I'm using my flash it locks me to 200 shutter speed max. It's quite annoying

I wish to have 5Diii, but i am not sure if i should get Nikon D800 instead of 5D3.

Mind if I ask why you would want to get the D800 ahead of the 5D3 if you are already a Canon shooter? You would have to change your system......
Speaking purely personal I would say that the 5D3 offers more than the D800 unless you're after the XXXtra megapixels. That isn't a must-have for me and the 5D3 has a better frame rate 6fps c/f to a paltry 4 with the D800. The 5D3's AI servo system is right out of the 1Dx and really there's nothing better out there IMHO and the 5d3 has more AF points than the D800. If you don't need the higher resolution, the 5D3 will serve you better I dare say but then I'm just a little bit biased
TBH though, ever since I picked up my 1D3 back in January of 2010, I have never hankered after a Nikon. Canon have I believe a better lens lineup and great support.
I may be biased but I think, justifiably so![]()

I actually went the other way. I was shooting Nikon, but wasn't getting on with the camera (D600), I had thought about the D800, but after a lot of reading, downloading RAW files etc, I made the decision to make the move to Canon. It would have been easier and cheaper to just get a D800, but it just didn't appeal to me.
The spec and versatility of the 5D3 is actually what I had expected to see in the D700's successor, but the D800 was pretty far away from that. Don't get me wrong, the D800 can produce stunning images, but for my needs the 5D3 was simply the more sensible choice.
Well, i nwas thinking about D800 because i wanted a DSLR with higher mp to use for landscapes and sometimes portraits, but my main shoot is landscapes and cityscape/architecture/nightshots, here mostly AF and high ISO is not so important, those needs mostly a higher MP, i have a perfect camera for sports and wildlife already, but the highest mp DSLR i have is 1DsIII, 5D3 is very slightly above it for mp and file quality, so that i was thinking that D800 is king of DSLR in file quality at base/low ISO without AF accuracy and speed.
I wish to have 5Diii, but i am not sure if i should get Nikon D800 instead of 5D3.
I thought most people turned the shutter sound off. Personally i dont like it, it sounds too delicate to me. Its not a manly sound lol.
Then again, i do prefer the silent mode anyway.

1 week in and i am still blown away with my 5D MKIII and not regreting selling my Nikon D700 and lenses to move back to Canon. just a few observations
I am sure many of you have made the same observation but my 5D 3 came with a grip and when its fitted the camera seems too big and too heavy so till now its remained in the box.
Or is this just me?
I still dont know how i can get photos to write to my SD card and Movies to the CF card or if its even possible? if not what is the point of dual slots as the 5D writes to a SD card first if inserted it seems?
The layout of the controls are excellent and easy to use once you get use to them, the Af seemed complicated at first but now i seem to have got the hang of it. i love the screen and the onboard editing of Raw files and the built in HDR which works really well.

Get yourself one of them 41 megapixel phones if mp is all you need![]()
I think asking this question on this forum will get you no where, there are a higher percentage of amateurs on here,so you will find more fan boys trying to defend there brand .Don't get me wrong this happens everywhere, but seems more so here, the D800 thread is exactly the same.
Check out the FM forum I know there are quite a no. of users there that run duel systems for this exact reason. Canon for sports and every day and the d800 for landscape,as what ever any canon user says it does excel in this area more than any canon body made if you need MP and DR.
Downside being the nikon TS lens cant match the canons.
No thanks, i prefer 20mp DSLRs over 50mp phone.
You are right, in fact i wasn't planning to convert to Nikon, i just was thinking to add Nikon that camera model only with very few lenses, but it sounds i will not have much answers for recommendations or as you said, go no where.
Then i think i should hold longer until Canon can produce something bigger than 2xMP, i think 1Ds3 will be my main camera for landscape over 1DX then, and i will not talk about another camera i have that beat both Canon/Nikon in mp all the out of water [it should be out to water i think....LOL].
How big do you print to need 30+ mp?
And id say the need for dual systems has now gone. Canon have high frame rates not to match those of nikon. Nikon have some of the best lenses on the market. Its a dead heat. Currently the only thing for my that puts nikon on top is the ability to have dx lens and stick it on a d800 and switch to dx mode so now you habe your 1.5x crop. Amd yes you could do it in pp but theres no need and its better suited to get people I to ff slowly.
Other than thos the differences are really minimal
At what quality? At 300ppi ("photo quality"), 20 megapixels gives you around 18"x12".how big i can print with say: 20mp, 30mp, 50mp?
Why not look to medium format digital? If you want high resolution and IQ it is in a different league to 35mm based systems. I love my 5D3 for low light stuff, and for travelling light, but my medium format gear produces files which are just altogether better. You can also use technical cameras, legacy MF cameras etc.
