Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Well said. I don't just post loads of random shots. Last couple even have a bit of info . One showed what this camera can domin fast moving subjects and the other in a controlled studio setup where I did no pp at all as it came our brilliantly.

Some people just don't have anything better to do but no nip pick and moan.

Both your shots and arwesa's recent shot (further up this page) have had their meta data stripped and you haven't provided any extra info.
The 5DIII is good enough that it's darned hard to guess how good the available light was without you providing us the settings.
More info would be appreciated, especially if there is a story behind the image :)

Just to add my ha'porth of nitpicking and moaning, I do question what the point is of posting images "taken with a 5d3" when there is no information about the settings with the image. An image posted at 72 dpi is never going to give a real impression about the quality or otherwise of the original.

Is it?

My meta data should be their? I will double check .

It is there. They are probably clicking on the image in this thread and trying to see the Exif, rather than going to the original image on Flickr (just a guess though)

I don't know if it is the new Flickr interface, or a user preference, but I can't find a way to get the meta data out of Flickr on Jonny's images; I used to know how.
And arwesa hasn't linked to Flickr.

Not having used my camera over the week now, looking at edits over the week 24-70 ii. i'm finding that the images are very soft indeed.

I was mainly shooting F8 /60th sec (indoors) 1k iso.

Still learning about the camera and pushing the iso ranges etc :)

Anyone have any advice?

Shutter speed seema low especially shooting at the high end ie 60plus mm range

Tend to agree that's a big old lens to hand hold at the inverse of the (max) focal length, but then I struggle these days to hand hold anything at the inverse focal length, which is one of the reason I went 5D3 so I could up the Iso.

Matt

Hmmm, could it be the shutter speed was a bit slow?

Can you post a poor sample so we can see what you are talking about.

shall post something asap

& Mostly at 24mm /70mm

24/70 isn't really big compared to the 70-200 :)

And the min shutter speed is also a fantastic feature. set it to 1/250 and auto ISO and away you go. no more blury shots!

Also, be careful, dont talk too much about lenses here as it is off topic and not related to a 5d3..

:bonk::D

I've been doing 1/250 & f5.6 (manual) with auto Iso - will try other settings soon, but very pleased so far.

You can talk about em, just don't post pictures of em

I find my 24-70 to work very well in low light, but I do prefer to use flash whenever I can, and always bounced (these days always with a BFT attached)

Slow shutter speed, higher ISO and narrow DOF can be tricky sometimes.

My biggest gripe with the 5D3 is the massive menu and the way the image magnify is operated. As a pixel peeper it's so frustrating!

The 5D2 had the perfect menu system in my opinion. I wish we could choose to hide some tabs.

I don't know if you have discovered this, but I've found it helpful…. by clicking the Q button after you've clicked the menu button, it toggles across the main menu headings.

I've also set it up so it goes to 'My menu' first, where I've set my most used options.

Yes, thats a useful feature. I think it works like that on all the Canon cameras that have the Q butoon.

Still yet to post a photo up but feel silly that i didn't get things tack sharp.
Any good videos or guides to read to help with this?

It's not going to be easy to provide feedback on this without seeing an example of what you're talking about, including setup and how you're focusing etc.

umm i hope the weather is like this on saturday. looking to do an epic photo walk with the missus in central london

^^ this weekend is supposed to be hotter actually.

Taking the kids to the Natural History Museum on Friday, hopefully I'll get the chance to take some pictures (both inside and around London). I've checked on the website and cameras are fine apparently, just no tripods.

With the low light ISO capabilities you shouldn't need a tripod anyway! It's a horrible place to take photos in my opinion, but look forward to seeing what you come up with

Yeah, I like the suggestion earlier in the thread of setting the minimum shutter speed to 1/250 and auto-ISO then snapping away in AV mode. Hopefully I'll get a chance to take some wandering pics as well, but I have to remember that the kids are with me!

Its a shame im down in Kent on sat, would have been good to meet up.
Im sure you will have a fantastic time though, loads going on at the moment.

If using the min shutter feature just be aware that although the camera will try and stick to the set speed, if it finds its still under exposing it will drop the shutter speed below whats been set (this is not the same as Safety shift, which can be turned off).

I dont have minimum shutter speed set. I use manual, so I set the shutter speed to what I want and the aperture to what I want and let the camera set the Iso, via auto Iso. I'm expecting at some point the Iso will not be able to go that high or low and I will get under/over exposure, which I think will be shown in the viewfinder ( I would expect it to be). When that happens I will adjust one of the two values I have set, not the camera. That way I get the shutter speed I want/need to avoid camera shake etc and I set the aperture for the dof or IQ I want.
I might end up with noise (at the high end) but not camera shake or some aperture I didnt want. For me (and I know its a personal thing) I think this feature is really usefull, I'm not that fussed about what Iso it uses but I really want to control the other two items in getting the correct exposure.

But thanks for your advice, appreciate it, if I move to min shutter in the menu I will try and recall what you have said above.

I'm thinking of selling mine, great camera and there's lots I like about it but the fps is a touch low for my needs.

Decisions, decisions

I sold mine and got a second 1DX, never looked back. The 5D3 is a great body but it is restrictive on the FPS if you are shooting sport.

You know it makes sense !!

Its not the kit fella, its what you do with it, the final image. If you are competing to provide a service then you have to get the image that is better in someway than the guy next to you.

If by having the faster frame rate is going to give you that edge then that body is the right one for you.

If on the other hand you are not in direct competition and you images are just for you or your familly, then Im sure a lower spec body will suffice.

I dont have them round my neck either lol, One is normally on a Monopod with a long lens attached and the other sat on my kit box or down by my side of my stool with a 70-200 on it.

Had an epic photo walk yesterday around london.

From liverpool street to borough market.

Then after stuffing myself with lots of food and drink, i walked all the way to big ben through southbank and catched the underground to Hyde park corner where i chilled and relaxed and laid down for about an hour in hyde park(HTC One X phone battery died after only 5+hours. hardly used it. going to buy a S4 soon.).

Took more shots there and then quickly went to oxford street to buy missus something in selfridges. i looked at some camera gear their particularly the billingham bags and then after i took a bus down to china town and had dinner there with the missus :) It was now around 10pm so we decided to head home.

All and all it was an epic day and the point i am making that is relivant to this thread a bit is that i was carrying my 5d3 with a 16-35, 70-200 and my 600 EX flash and it did not kill my shoulders at all thanks to this bag

http://fstopgear.com/product/mountain/loka#.UeJ1ao3Oto8

That bag is brilliant and keeps your 5d3 secure and comfy all day.

I will post some pics to show u a bit on how great the AF really is on this camera as half of my shots where taken when i wasnt looking through the viewfinder at all and i was gobsmacked that most of them came IN-FOCUS!

Nice one.

It was really too hot for me yesterday. I was supposed to be out of London but didnt get any further than the Southbank/Trafalgar Square and Covent Garden (all fairly close to me).

I too have been using a new bag. I brought a Vanguard UP-Rise 33 last month. Its not much bigger than my old Lowepro Classified AW160 but it does make changing lenses without taking the bag off a bit easier, as each can fit in its won section and be pulled out without taking the bag off. Its top loading as well as having a flap for better access.
And yes, its very comfortable when its full.

On this subject i was wondering if anyone here also owns a Canon M camera?
Im really not using my 60D these days so im going to sell it, but I do want a spare camera, and at the current price (£300 inc cash back) im looking at replacing the 60D with something even smaller. It will also be good to have this with me for extra reach. Im familiar with the 650D's IQ so i know ill be happy with the M as well.
I know its not the best of its class, but at least i wont need to buy any new lenses, as it comes with the EF adapter.

Right, back on topic, i took this today, at the Royal Festival Hall. Ive been itching to get a faster zoom, but im really happy with this ISO3200 shot, taken with my 70-200 f/4. The lighting was tricky (particularity the reds) but i think the camera did well.
