Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

I can let you have the raw file if you like. I can put it in drop box and PM you the link.

That would be great Dave. I'm convinced there's something wrong with the ISO performance on my 5D3 when I see shots like yours.

Ill get it sorted by about 10 this morning and PM you.

ISO12800 isn't great but for smaller shots its useable and I'd prefer noise and a bit of softness over camera blur. I've got some terrible high ISO shots, but at the size I posted above you really can't tell.

I shot this last night at ISO 2000... done a little skin smoothing but no NR other than what was a by-product of that.

8516242993_ee9eeb6af9_z.jpg

Can't believe how epically good the body is at this ISO... my 7D would have melted trying to produce anything other than 'ok' at this ISO!

I don't want to poor scorn on the issue of using iso 2000 but that image is hardly the best example of a 'no noise shot'.

For one at the size we are viewing at it could well have been shot at iso 6400. Also, the background has virtually no shadow detail, which would be one of the main issues to show noise. Then the fact that all the oof DoF loveliness is covered in a fabric that would be hard to distinguish between noise and the pattern of the fabric.

Well, I shot my first gig with the 5DIII last night.

Wow, I can focus on stuff with the outer points. Just wow.

Dare I ask!!!

How does the 5d compare with the compact Sony NEX-6?

Is it possible to add WiFi to the 5D enabling instant upload to the internet cloud storage?

Cheers

John

Hi, can I join in?

I was planning on buying a 5D III towards the end of the year, however my very generous hubby just got me one for my birthday :D I'm still in a bit of shock as I only got it today.

Thought I'd join in here to help the learning process along :)

Not read through the thread yet but I've already learnt where the DOF button was hiding!

Cheers Alan. I think I'd lie,,to shoot an airs how this year. I have access to a 100-400L but would probably put it on my 60D for extra reach.

What a lovely gift, and happy birthday.
Forget reading the thread for now, read the manual instead. Then you can skip a lot of this thread -)

Welcome and congratulations!

Thank you.

I have had a very quick play with it, I find it a entertaining trying to figure out where everything is! I'll be reading the manual this week at some point.

First impressions are it's a fair bit heavier than I'm used to and I was rather surprised by the amount of focus points! But the speed of it is amazing. Well impressed so far :)

Hi Marsha,

You'll wonder how you ever managed to take photos without it before long! :D There's a Canon 'White Paper' that explains the AF in great detail. It was originally written for the 1Dx but the information applies equally to the 5DMKIII. Go and download a copy and make yourself a brew! It's worth a read.

Loving mine. Shot a gig last friday all at Iso12800

Now THAT is an awesome bit of high ISO photography... Very impressive!

Nice couple of shots guys. Well done.

A boring but nice couple from me today. First time out in daylight with the 24-70 f/2.8L MKII.
I love this lens but im still struggling with the shorter range i now get with 5D. I guess i did survive with a 17-55 f/2.8 IS on my crops for almost 4 years as my main lens so im sure ill get used to this again.

Tomorrow im hoping to use my 70-200 most of the time.

Cheers. I'm still getting used to the change in perceived focal length of my lenses. I shot almost the entire night on my 70-200 f2.8. I really enjoyed my 50D, but these would have been impossible to shoot without the 5D. At times I was able to get high shutter speeds to really freeze the moment. ISO 12800 is the same as ISO1600 on my 50D (I compared on the night). I just put the 50D away (was trying with 50mm f1.4 as second body)

What I wasn't expecting was the marked difference in quality of the shots. I have L lenses, but the 5D really makes the most of them. All the gig shots were straight out of camera. The monochrome were converted with a little artistic boost in contrast. A stunning body.

The actual gig photos are here: http://www.nineelmsphotography.com/index.php?option=com_igallery&view=igcategory&id=14&Itemid=68

All the lighting was from behind, so interesting. A couple of others:

Great set of gig shots, especially the first one (im a bass player as well :)

One of the big reasons i got my 5D was for gig shooting. I'd love to get in to that. I even got my 100 f/2 mainly for doing this, but so far ive not been to any gigs other my own lol.
I really must get out a bit more this year and go see some local bands.

I know what you mean about quality of image. I find with good glass no matter how much noise is in the shot there is so much detail there as well. They clean up so well.

I think my 7D will start to gather dust soon! I'm keeping it as a spare and for those occasions where the crop factor gives me reach.

I've downloaded that white paper, it's added to my list of 'need to read' items!

I've just been out with my 70-200 on and it only took me a few shots to adjust to the change in focal length! But OMG the 5D does wonders for already wonderful glass!

I'll have to upload some of my first photos later.

:plusone: agreed, cracking shots!

I got my 5D exclusively for live music, although it will do my other stuff quite well too. It really is a superb camera for it, I'm able to shoot shows now that my 7D would have choked at when trying to focus!

Agree about the detail, I'm actually not concerned about using a bit of noise reduction on my raws now. They just clean up really well.

Loving the fact I can use 6400 knowing it will look better than 3200 on my 7D and give me that valuable extra shutter speed.

I made the right choice, 100%.

Outstanding photos Byker28i!! I've just given up standing behind the bass and you've made me think I should take my camera when I see bands now… not that I could hope to achieve anything remotely close! :)

I tried my 5D3 out yesterday taking some action shots for the first time (previously used a 550D and 50D) - what a difference on a grey day.

Here's also my first attempt at putting a photo in a thread… hope it works!

:) I've just checked on my phone and it's okay, but the IMG tags are showing on my laptop, so maybe I should have deleted those. I'll practice posting some more when I've practised with my camera some more :)

I convinced myself to get one for gig photography when I wasn't getting much with the 60D. I now know that better lenses are key to this, but the 5dmk3 is vastly superior for gig photography. It's so much easier to use in that scenario and I get far more keepers with it (as I should with a 35L & 85L!).

I just remembered I bought a storm jacket ages ago, so I've got a bit extra protection should I get caught in the rain :)

I have found though, that the 100L is very poor for gig photography if the light is low. It takes ages to lock on, so fast moving stuff is out of the question.

I use the 24-70 F2.8L with the 5D3 and will be adding the 70-200mm F2.8 II to my bag in a couple of months. Maybe get a wide lens too.

Sure, I know primes are better for gigs, but my style really relies upon the versatility a zoom offers me. So I just need to make sure I pick venues to shoot that actually have stage lighting ;)

Time for a shameless photo post :)

The 70-200 2.8mk2 would be great for the gigs I've been doing lately. I love the 85L and the 35L, but the sharpness of that lens would make it ideal for smallish sized gigs. I've been to a couple that the 24-70 would be perfect for too. If I ever start making money from it, I will almost certainly invest in those two lenses, and eventually a second body.

If not, I'll probably buy them anyway :D

I had previously posted a link to one on Flickr and it didn't show the image, just the link. This time I posted an image to the members gallery and then linked to that URL

When you want to post an image from Flickr just hit the share button and copy all the text that appears in the share window ( make sure its set to show BBCode), then just paste the whole lot in your message. No need to put any IMG code in the post.

Great shot you posted earlier. Well captured.

Really like those shots, especially the first one with the guitarist and fans up close in one shot.

You gig shooters are making me feel the urge to get off my ass and go shoot some live music.

Ah thank you Dave. I'm fairly new to Flickr, so I hadn't thought of that :bonk:

hi all

well now i have got use to my 5DIII and have the lens i need for
wildlife and aviation i am looking for a walk around lens

my options

canon 24-70 mk2 (bit to high a cost but could save up)
canon 24-70 mk1 ( heavy and no is)
canon 24-105 (F4 but has is, is good for 1stop of light)
tamron 24-70 (has vc but no rear eliment protection)

i know its down to me but some advise would be a help

thank in advance

alan

I'd go 24-70 Mk1 there, with the ISO capabilities of the MkIII you could just bump the ISO up a bit to negate the need for IS, unless you were already at the limit.

-

Played with a MkIII at Focus yesterday, and now I want one, based on the limited chance to try on there, the focus is much quicker. Not a chance that I can justify it over my 7D though, maybe if a deal comes up with a 24-70 next year or so.

Ive owned the Tamron and 24-105, and own the 24-70 MKII.

The Tamron(s) i had had issues, but produced very good images. The addition of VC is a big one and i definitely had a use for it. Shame mine kept breaking.
Im not sure about what no rear element protection means. It is weather sealed although i dont know how that stacks up against the Canons.

The 24-105. Well, we al know what thats like. one of the best all rounders and can be brought second hand for under £500 now. Slower than f/2.8 but also with a nicer range and IS helps a lot IME.

The 24-70 MKII is over priced compared to the Tamron (well, they are all over priced IMO) but it does feel nicer on the camera, focuses quite a bit faster and produces nicer looking images (again, IMO and IME). Im not talking about sharpness as such, just more pop and contrast to my eyes.

For me the bottom line was get as fast as i could (f/2.8) and something i feel i can trust 100%, with a fast AF system, and that was the 24-70MKII. The Tamron was sluggish when using AI Servo. Not really bad but out of all my lenses this one was the only one that couldn't really keep up.

Just my thoughts based on owning them, and shooting at amateur level.

DPReviews test fo the Canon 24-70 f/2.8 MKII shows how nice it is, and confirms my thoughts about it being sharper than the Tamron's i owned.
