Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Got mine a couple of weeks ago, not hard chance to use it yet been crazy busy with work. Had a few problems getting the Eye Fi card to work and transmit to the ipad but sorted now, need to get out and use it.

Out of interest what issues did you have with the Eye Fi card?
The only reason I ask is that santa is bringing me one and I too will be wanting to use it with my ipad.

What program are people using to view their .cr2 files?

I've only got PSE8 and I'm a bit stuck.

Trevor

You can use 'Digital Photo Professional' that comes with the camera

edit: oops I seem to have replied to an old post! Too much Christmas spirit :)

Amazing shots :-)

Excellent shots i really must visit Pembrokeshire, looks as if you don't post exif on Flickr i am guessing green bridge was a long exposure?

Awesome shots, thanks for sharing.

Beautiful shots.

What lens did you use?

thanks guys - exif should be on them still in additional info bottom right :) Green bridge was 13 seconds and all shot with 17-40 f/4, love that lens

great shots bucks and dave_bass5!

Can I ask, did anyone else have any problems with their cameras when they first got them? I am thrilled to get my hands on a 5D III, but there is a problem and I cannot download RAW files.

Canon email support is not working, but I rang them today. At their suggestion, I've reset the camera to factory settings and downloaded the latest EOS utility, and I've now narrowed the problem down to it being just RAW files that are the problem.

It's taken me hours checking leads, umpteen reinstalling software etc. - even though Adobe Bridge can't get the pictures off the camera either.

I've waited all day for an email. I expect I'll either have to reinstall firmware or send it back under warranty.

Does anyone have any words of wisdom please?

Hi Bebop

How odd if you have a card reader i would pop it in the USB port of your PC and look in the "My Computer" click on your card and open it check if any raw files are there.

I know this sounds silly but you have set the camera to take raw images? perhaps you have a CF and SD card in and the raw files are going to the one you have not checked.

Remember the raws on a Canon are cr files if you have cs5 it wont open 5D3 raw shots unless they are DNG LR4 works with the camera as does CS6

Hope some of that helps good luck :)

Thanks mate - sound like you need to install the latest canon DPP software that came with it and latest adobe camera raw. Older versions wont read 5d3 files :)

Thanks very much. As at as the raw file issue goes I can't really help. I put my card in a reader, DownloaderPro downloads them and renames them automatically and I import them in to LR4. Never had an issue.

I would definitely recommend a card reader rather than connecting the camera, especially if you have a USB 3 reader, but I can't see any reason downloading directly from the camera shouldn't work as long as you have the latest software that supports the 5D raw files. Although the various cameras output .cr2 files they are not the same files.

Thank you everyone for your replies. It is indeed odd! I am on a learning curve with the 5DIII, but have a 50D and 550D, so am familiar with EOS utility, DPP and Adobe Bridge. I did wonder if there was something special about the RAW files on the 5DIII.

I don't have a card reader (yet!), but I have tried using each of the cards separately, and reformatting them and starting afresh. The red herring was when it downloaded fine, but that was because of the factory default settings - it's set to jpeg Large.

With raw files, the EOS utility just hangs until I have to force quit it, and adobe bridge hangs and eventually says it can't download them (I can't remember the reason it gives now, but at one point it said it was possibly a low battery on the camera).

I suspected the lead (as did the Canon guy), but I successfully loaded raw files off the 50D with it, so that discounts that.

I did manage to get some RAW files off if I tried one at a time. As soon as I tried more, it hung. Luckily I've just been playing trying to familiarise myself with the camera, so nothing important is lost.

My daughter tried downloading them with iPhoto on her Mac. That hung for a while, and then she clicked to cancel, as it said there was a problem… but it did then download them…. strange!

I think I'll just have to be patient and await Canon's feedback :(

I will look into getting a card reader and reconsider my workflow once I'm up and running. I don't have Lightroom yet, but lots of people seem to recommend it.

At least I know it is just me :-/

I'm very impressed with the photos I've seen on here. Thanks again for the replies.

I've just reread that - I do have CS5 - so that might explain Adobe Bridge not being able to download them. Although it will let me look at the ones I've downloaded using the one at a time method with the EOS utility.

Thanks for the link buckas - I'll see if I can update it.

To be honest my brain is a bit addled. I started having to write down everything I'd tried :cuckoo:

If this was me I'd stump up for a cheap card reader, just to get this checked out. In fact if you don't get it sorted by wed I'm happy to post you one to try.
I'd not wait for canon to get back, there are too many variables and whiel it could well be the camera there are a lot other things that they might want you to check, it could go on and on.

It does sound like you have software that can't work with these files.

That's a kind thought Dave. I will go and get one. I will need one anyway.

I've had another thought, and that is to load up the software on my old PC to see if it works on that - maybe there is a conflict somewhere on my Mac. I am new to Macs, so I got my daughter to supervise the last uninstall/install in case I was doing something stupid. Mind you, I need to get it to download to that eventually. It would just be nice to know it's not a problem with the camera.

I'm also a bass player by the way :)

No problem. I do have a few lying around so happy to let you have one to try but it really is the fastest way of getting your images on to a computer so yes, it's worth getting one.
I don't really know much about Mac software so can't advise, but I'm surprised EOS utility is having issues. Saying that, I've not used it in years so maybe that is also a consideration.

Nice to know there are other bass players out there not gigging tonight. This is my fist NYE off for 9 years and its killing me. I never realised there was so much rubbish on TV on NYE. Luckily we have a great view of the London eye from our flat, I have the tripod all set to go at midnight :-)
I took this last night at the rehearsal for tonight's light show. Hand held with my Tamron lens. The two did really well

Wow that is a fabulous shot!

My last gig with my band was a year ago tonight! :) I have depped once during the year, but I'm quite enjoying a break after many years gigging.

I've made some progress - I updated EOS utility on my old pc and it downloaded the raw files with no problem. I know what I'm doing on a pc more.

On the Mac when I install it, I get a message saying it's updated it whereas on the pc it says it's installed it. This makes me think it's leaving rogue files somewhere when I try and remove it. There is no neat uninstall on a Mac but I think I can download an app to do it.

Oh well at least it looks like it's not the camera thank goodness!

Hope you got more great shots tonight :)

Well, mine arrived yesterday, thanks Kerso.

All the buttons have moved from my 50D so I'm reading the menu but wow what low noise performance.

Rather than search through all 52 pages again, are there any must have settings?

Thanks

Great news really glad it's not the camera i am puzzled cs5 would display your raw file mine would not in PS never tried bridge as i use LR for the raw part is what you see the jpeg in the raw i wonder you could try a month free trial of LR or CS6 see if that worked good luck.

I am SO glad you mentioned this. I have been out and taken some RAW shots on the SD card and uploaded them via the Canon browser, not using EOS utility! I can view the raw files in bridge but the quality is so much worse than in the Canon software - it will display them but not render them properly!! I would have been so disappointed in the image quality and would not have known 5DIII raw files weren't supported - so thank you!

I plan to get LR, but I was only just getting to grips with bridge and quite liked some of the features :-/

Hi Bebop

I used Bridge exclusively then i found LR and after forcing myself to learn i love it you can do so much and save so much time plus you get the correct Adobe raw files which i really like.

So glad the camera is now stacking up i love mine

:)

In case anyone is interested, I have found the link to update Photoshop CS5 for the 5D III. Thanks to buckas for pointing me in the right direction. Hopefully it will work until I get Lightroom.

Edit: the link above is for updating a Mac ( and possibly just the 10.7.5 OS that I have). Mickledore has kindly pointed out that for windows you will need this link http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=5371&fileID=5001

Thanks, that shot was one I was going to delete as it was way over exposed. It just goes to shot that LR4 can do wonders with raw files.

I didn't get much last night. Although we could see it all from the flat there was so much smoke we ended up watching it on TV lol.

I'm glad you are getting somewhere with the raw files. Looks like there is no need to worry about the camera now.

I took a few years off from playing music and did find it more relaxing but really missed the money. We did about 30 gigs last year but so far this year is looking a bit empty. I'm sure things will pick up.

And just like you need to update the Adobe camera raw iirc you need LR 4.1 to open mk3 files

My New Years Day shot..

Not really into Astro Photography, but noticed loads of stars up in the sky, so thought I'd have a go with the 5D3 on my cheapy tripod.. it's a bit too heavy for the tripod, so had a bit of trouble keeping it still!
