Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

The news is good re firmware update, but I wonder what the reasoning is making us wait till April 2013

Ive been a bit confused about this red light thing. What is it that we are missing? Is it to keep the AF box lit up until the shot has been taken or something else?

Compared with all EOS bodies before the 5DIII and 1DX...
We lost the red focus confirmation dots in any situation that might affect metering.
In one-shot AF, I've had people being photographed telling me they can see the red flash through the front of the lens

Hence black AF confirmation dots are used when metering might be affected, e.g. AI Servo.
Unfortunately the black focus confirmation dots sometimes cannot be seen against the subject!
A nightmare in any low light situation....

The 'fix' they have release for the 1DX allows an option to be selected where the focus confirmation dots flash instead of being continuously illuminated. Meter is only performed when the dots are off and we get to see the dots when they are on.
It's far from ideal; but there are quite a few situations where this will be better than nothing.

Seriously? 6 months for something that 5dmk3 users asked for first? *shakes fist*

Still, it doesn't affect me currently so I'll just carry on taking expensive, poorly taken photos :D

Has anyone else noticed the red light come on when the memory card door is opened, even though the camera is switched off??

Yes, when the card is changed? The mk2 did the same, as did the 40D from memory. It not really fully off when it is off. Have a look through the viewfinder as you drop the battery out...

I didn't change the card, I just opened the gate to check something.

When you have these expensive toys, they can make you paranoid :-)

Hopefully should be picking up my 5D Mk3 today - was in the lucky position of having £4k to spend at Currys after a competition win and so thought I'd treat myself and upgrade from my 40D.

Sure I'll have some questions soon about accessories and lenses as will be selling off my EF-S kit.

With the 1d4 when in AI Servo mode, the red led illuminated to indicate that focus had been achieved. If the shutter release button or Back Button was released and then re-applied the led would illuminate momentarily again, to indicate focus achieved.

When shooting a moving subject with a dark BG, the red LED showed exactly where the focus point was.. thus helping to acquire focus of the desired area of the frame....

I was trying to set this last night on my 5D3...it only works in OneShot and AIFocus....Not is AI Servo. Bit of a pain really ...I'll be trying it this weekend and I'll report back

Yes... I keep thinking I left the camera on lol.

The focus point also flashes when you change from portrait to landscape orientation. I don't know if this is because I have selected different AF points for each or what. However, another little quirk

Congrats :) Was it a photographic competition? Care to share? :)

Nothing that interesting unfortunately - if it was I'd of had no chance. :)

Was a competition Acer ran on Facebook, but it was rather confusing and a total of 80 people entered.

Just trying to get hold of Currys to see if it's been delivered today, but they aren't answering the phone so might have to head down the store and see what they're playing at. :bang:

Managed to pick mine up yesterday in the end - looks a stunning bit of kit, can't wait to get out and use it.

Just something random, ISO102400 f1.4 1/40... amazed what 5D3 can record, it was so dark that only thing I could see was the LCD screen on the video camera. :)

umm. u shined a bright light on the subject so of course it will lock focus easily. take that same shot without the light and see what happens.

this camera is amazing but it aint that freaking amazing!!

I agree. Ive had more missed shots with this camera than with my 60D, because i feel like it can do anything, and it cant. Thats not knocking the camera, just that im getting a bit carried away with it.

I took this last night, 1/5 second, ISO800 f/4 hand held. Very pleased with it.

There's a new firmware update thats been announced for launch in April 13 that'll give a little more functionality to you lucky Mk3 owners.

the details are

Canon has unveiled plans for a new EOS 5D Mark III firmware designed to enhance shooting and improve video workflow.
The new firmware enables HDMI output functionality, ideal for professional videographers, as well as improved AF performance for photographers shooting with telephoto lenses.
Following feedback from cinema and TV production professionals, the new firmware includes ‘clean’ HDMI output, enhancing overall video editing and monitoring procedures. Videographers will be able to output high-definition uncompressed video data (YCbCr 4:2:2, 8 bit) without any embedded icons or symbols, from the EOS 5D Mark III to an external recorder using the camera’s HDMI terminal. The new functionality will enable easier editing of data with minimal image degradation for greater on-site workflow efficiency during production, as well as the option to record to the internal memory card at the same time.
The enhanced features also include outputting of time code over HDMI to an external recorder, as well as the ability to synchronise start and stop of video capture with the start and stop of recording to an external device*. The new firmware also enables real-time output to external monitors, ideally suited for on-set monitoring by the wider production team.
The new firmware also adds improved AF performance when capturing still images, opening up more advanced shooting possibilities for photographers. When using a lens and extender, resulting in a maximum f/8 aperture, the new firmware enables the camera to utilise the EOS 5D Mark III’s central dual cross-type focal points, currently only available up to an f/5.6 aperture. The new capabilities allow sports and nature photographers to use AF when getting closer to distant subjects, achieving precision detail when using telephoto lenses.
The firmware will be free to download from April 2013.

Check Canon's site for more.

Has anyone updated to the new firmware? The process seems quite complex. Is there a easy way to do it?

Its a lot to take in, even if you know Canon camera's already. Luckily i had to go in to Hospital for a day or so just after getting mine so i loaded my ipad up with the manual and a good book on this camera and came out fixed and full of confusing snippets of knowledge :gag:.
