Had mine a few months now and love it.The image quality, especially in low light, is outstanding. In fact, I've sold more indoor dressage pictures since having the 5d ;)
But....today I used it with my Elinchrom DLites and have come across some bizarreness. I used to use a 7d and sync'd at 1/250 but I can't do that with the ff 5d and ended up at 1/160, which for todays sleeping newborn was'nt a problem but with the normal live wires that I shoot, could pose a problem!!

i've noticed when using when using my RF602s I can't sync at 1/200, there's a tiny bit of black at the bottom, almost like vignetting. So I too end up using 1/160, my subjects are still too, so doesn't cause any problems for me.

Not sure if it's the camera or the receivers though.

I really like it. I got it because I needed a very small lens to go on my 60D so I could put it in my suit bag. I wasn't expecting too much but I found it to be sharper at f/2.8 than my 50 f/1.4 is. Focusing distance is also closer so while not macro it's easier to use when sitting at a table for instance.
Edge to edge sharpness is spot on, even wide open.
It's been years since I used a 50 f/1.8 so wouldn't like to comment on what's better but I don't have any problems with using it instead of my 50mm. Only slight negative is the STM system is a bit slower than USM but its still very useable.

Thanks for the feedback, I think I'll wait until I get some disposable income lol.

I don't think any of the 5D series syncs much above 1/160, although it depends on what triggers you're using. My 5Dc syncs at 1/200 with Skyports, but 1/160 is more consistent. 1/250 is impossible unless the black band is hidden due to the composition. I would have thought that the mk3 is no different in this regard.

What you experienced is completely normal. The quoted 1/200 by Canon is with their speedlites. Off camera flashes (and studio lights) will not sync that fast, 1/125 or 1/160 is what most triggers will do. There is a way to get higher sync speed but that requires PocketWizard hypersync (or similar). While 1/160 does not sound fast enough you have to remember that flash duration will freeze most subjects you take pictures off (also depends on the amount of ambient light).

This image is taken with 5D2 at 1/160 but it would be the same with 5D3. :)

Flash duration was fast enough to freeze the motion enough in daylight. :)

So why do Canon sell a top (isn) of the range dslr that is supposed to be a technological step forward but then reduce the step forward in certain areas??
Doing a google search has raised a few ideas.....my batteries need changing:D, the difference between shutter travel on a apsc and a ff camera.
I have 2 sets of Dlites which have the Skyport receiver built in....so does that mean I'm stuck with 1/160?

I thought that the reason the higher spec bodies have a slower shutter speed was to increase it's life.

Going through yesterdays photos has produced even more weirdness! Using only 1 Dlite for some low key stuff and the sync speed was 1/250 but still had the banding....now I'm totally confused:thinking:

I think this type are much neater.

@edz. No problem good luck.

Actually on the subject of the pancake lens i noticed today that i have to have my eye dead centre over the VF with this lens, otherwise i get dark areas around the edges in the VF.
I guess this is because the lens is very curved. A bit like looking through a security peephole in a door. My other lenses are all perfect.

And on the subject of the VF, has anyone noticed a light grey circle in the VF? Its larger than any of the permanent ones, and can only been seen (just) if pointing the camera up at a bright sky.
I have read at least two users that have seen this but im wondering if others have this.
Its taken me 2 week's to see it so i can understand that most will say no because they haven't noticed it, rather than it definitely not being there.
At least, thats what im hoping.

The camera had a good outing yesterday. It was world Zombie day and i got some great shots.
Ill just post the one here with a link to the others if anyone is interested.

Thanks Dave,

Thanks Mark, I was very surprised to be able to get so close. This was a very shallow river at Hardwick park, there where lots of people and kids around and the Heron seemed totally unphased, just going about his business. :)

Can you explain the above please??

Ignore my last comment. I just read it back and I thought WTF!

Great series Dave. Can't believe I didn't know about this - totally missed it! :bonk: Mind you, I was totally hung over from Friday night/Saturday morning, so I would have fit in perfectly with no make up!

Thanks Pardeep. I only found out about it the day before but as it was very local to me i decided i'd better go and see what it was all about.
I took over 400 shots but dont think it was worth posting them all.

There were a lot of photographers there, and one thing that struck me was a lot of them were using fill flash. I really need to get in to this. Its something ive got by without learning but could really use. I guess its just lazy on my part as ive never taken my 580EXII out of the house. Time to start practising.

Yh, well worth learning fill flash - it's extremely useful! :) However, it's always funny to see (like on a Vimeo clip of the event) some of the togs using stofens on their speedlights, even when it does little to nothing to "soften" the light. :bang: All it does is reduce the efficiency of the flash. :bonk:

Funny you should mention those diffusers as i had a Omnibounce in the past but never found it useful for shooting with at home.
They did all seem to be using them on Sat, and i was going to maybe get another but after a bit of reading i dont think ill bother just yet.

I think most people make that mistake when they first get a flash gun and don't do their research properly. :) I know I made that mistake and now stofen is an expensive battery holder at home :/

Yep, save your money! The only thing that works well as a on-camera flash mod, is the Black Foamie Thing - use it for all internal bounce flash situations. Costs a couple of quid to make and infinitely better. It's so good that even when using the flash while camera is in portrait orientation, you won't get the tell-tale shadow behind the subject.

Actually, Neil's site that I linked is the definitive site to learn on-camera flash. The guy is a legend!

Yeah, thats what i did. When i first started out I got a Canon 420EX and a Omnibounce because i saw loads of people with them.
I always bounce flash and noticed i was getting more shadows if the subjects were close to a wall with the OB on, so stopped using it.

When i got my 580EXII i just didnt bother and have been quite happy with the little pull up card to direct more light forward, but shooting like this for so long as meant ive neglected fill and direct flash (for when its needed).

On the subject of the 580EXII ive read a few reports about this flash under exposing with the 5DMKIII. Ive not shot enough with flash yet to see if its true.

Anyone noticed this?

^^^ +1, so true! I've got some too, but only used them in conjunction with a beauty dish to try and get the light to spread better inside the dish. Still, I could never really emulated a true BD light with a speedlight as it's too directional. Anyway, I no longer use it, now we have proper strobes!

Yeah, i have Neil's site booked marked already and will be having a go at backing the Black foamy thing when im board one day.

I've actually lost mine! This has reminded me to get some craft foam ordered today!

I use the BFT too :D

Took me forever to find it online or in shops, here's a link if anyone wants one :)

Nice one! I think I got mine from another online shop that sells craft foam. I don't remember finding it too hard to source at the time...but it was some time ago!

P.S. I think we're taking this thread about the 5D3 off on a tangent. The mods will probably delete these comments!

Thats true, no speedlite can really compete with full size flash tube. :)

So back on topic, 5D3... kinda...

The high ISOs of 5D3 are so good that I start to contemplate of selling my Sigma 50 f1.4. :cuckoo: I found that I rarely used it below f2.8... sometimes f2.0, but almost never f1.4.
