Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

My second body arriving today, ordered it Friday from panamoz, 3 day turnaround over the weekend is better than you'd get from most uk suppliers, let alone from Hong Kong!
 
Can anyone recommend cheaper alternatives to the Canon remote shutter release for the 5dIII, either cable or wireless, and preferably with timer function?

Canons own tc-80n3 is a little rich for me, especially as I promised the wife I wouldn't spend too much on accessories this time around....

I bought one from eBay that looks exactly like the Canon item - £12.63 from a UK seller.
Feels slightly cheap compared to the real thing, but works very nicely!

Just checked - there are a few listings including a metal locking collar around £16.

I believe (I might be wrong) that anything ordered from Wednesday onwards in the week will all end up on the same UPS flight from HK on a Friday evening, hence reaching UK destinations on Monday. That's what seemed to have happened to me and a few others a week or so ago. So ordering on a Friday will always give the shortest delivery time. Not sure about items ordered on a Mon/Tue though :thinking:

I got mine from jessops, £19.99 and came with adapters to fit most canon. I had a 550d and used it with that and am still able to use it on 5d mkiii. Make is hahnel.
 
I'm sure this will get missed by a lot of people due to the enormity of the thread but worth asking in here as a first port of call I feel:

Has anyone upgraded from a 7D to the 5D MK III
And has anyone upgraded from a 5D MK II to a MK III

I'm planning my next upgrade and would love some insight from those have upgraded from a 7D to the 5D MK III, and what you've noticed in terms of improvement.

However I can pick up a MK II and 28-70mm f/2.8 for the same price as a MK III body... so if anyone has upgraded from the MK II please let me know what improvements you've noticed over the older body.

I mainly shoot weddings and portraits :)
 
I've gone from a 7d to a mark2 then to a mark 3

jump from a 7d to a mark 2 was a big one. Focus system was the only drawback but was worth losing for all the other features of going full frame. It just takes better pictures simply put.

5d to a mark 3 was a massive one but only because of what I shoot - children. For the last few months I have shot with both the mark 3 and the mark 2. When I do a toddler shoot I get 90% of my keepers from the mark 3 due to the focus system improvements and the auto ISO features with min shtter speed.

When I took them both to a wedding however it was 50:50. If you shoot a lot of subjects that aren't moving very fast then you'll be fine with a mark 2. I didn't really notice the mark 3 being that much better in the weddings I have shot.

I have just upgraded my mark 2 to another mark 3 so I have 2, but it's solely because it makes everything easier on a childrens shoot. If that wasn't my main target I'd be happy with two mark 2's

I came from a 350D, so a huge step up for me. It arrived last Monday but I only managed to get outside with it yesterday. Lots to learn, but it's gonna be fun :D

I got the kit with the 24-105, which I've found out suffers from lens creep when hanging on my BR strap. A quick google shows this is quite common with the 24-105. I wish Canon would build a locking mechanism into them.

Have you got a link to that one? I've got a remote shutter release/timer which I used on my 350D, but it has the wrong connector for the 5D, so it'll be interesting to find out if I can simply buy an adapter of some sort...:thinking:

hey I really need to know something and don't have time this eve to read through the manual to find out

how do I set my mark 3 to shoot onto both the CF and the SD card at the same time?

Ideally I want jpeg and raw on both or jpeg and raw on CF and just jpeg on SD

is this possible? How?

Spanner menu #1
Record func+card/folder sel.
Record func. and set it to "Rec. to multiple"
 
Gonna say it anyway... RTFM! :D

Go to the first of the yellow menus
Go to: 'Record func+card/folder sel.'
Go to: 'Record func' + 'Rec. separately'

Then you just need to specify which kind of files you want on which card! :)

Do you think I might find the focussing system on the 5d a bit frustrating after using the 7d, or is that all a bit of a myth?

Really depends on what you are doing. If you are shooting still or slow moving subjects and lots of time then no. If you are not shooting at razor thin dof then no.

If you are shooting toddlers at 1.6 on a swing. Yes. But when you hit it Your pics will be better.

Less keepers but better keepers.

I'm thinking more along the lines of:

Bride and bridesmaids walking down the aisle
Pics during the ceremony
1st dance
(all of the above at f/2.8)

The rest I can take on my 7D if I need a faster focussing system.

I've heard in low light the MK II suffers a bit with focussing... have you experienced this?

Also what are the fabled focussing issues... is it just it takes a bit longer to find the focus and lock on to it, or is there more too it than that (like it locks focus but then when you check later you realise it was actually a bit out?)

The simple solution is obvious. Wind it out to 105 when carrying, then wind in to where you want when shooting.

All of that will be no problem with the mark 2. People have used it for 4 years for exactly that. You won't see much difference at all with the mark 3 in those conditions.

The only real issues are that the outer points aren't hugely reliable and the tracking isn't that accurate. But conditions like above will be little challenege for the mark 2.

Thanks for that... looks like I might go for the mark II then when the time comes to upgrade (i.e. once I finished paying off my lenses)

I think you'd be fine with a Mark II also. I still use mine, keep wishing at the Mark III but just can't justify it as I don't get very many misses when I shoot motorsport with it either.
 
I have a question about having two cards in the camera, and although ive looked around the web im not sure ive found the answer.
Im well aware of the SD slot slowing the write speed down if both slots are used for writing, but does anyone know if this is true if im just writing to the CF card, but with a SD card also in the camera?
Im guessing it shouldn't as there isnt any SD card access going on but i cant find confirmation of this.

My plan is to use fast a fast CF card only for day to day shooting (i know i said i wouldn't but the slow buffer flush with SD is annoying me) but keep the SD card in as a precaution in case i forget to take the CF card, and later to run Magic Lantern from it.

I just re-checked and I was able to shoot 22 frames at 6fps before the frame rate stuttered.
Both cards were inserted and I was saving RAW to the CF.
CF - SanDisk Extreme Pro 16Gb 90 MB/s
SD - SanDisk Extreme Pro 16Gb 95 MB/s

If I take the SD out, I get the same results.
I haven't seen evidence of the inserted CF slowdown problem.
Can anyone else verify this?
