Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

well after doing my 5th wedding with the new 5d3, i have finally found a flaw, and it was one i didnt like! the auto focusing in low light is truely aweful! it thought the image was focused, took the photo and its very very poor! luckly i had the 5d2 as a backup for the first dance last night, or i would have been stuffed!

Really.. I think the low light af is phenomenal compared to the Mk2.. My keeper rate from first dance shots have come on massively.

Completely contrary to what I have found so far, even with an f/4 lens (the 24-105) it has seemed better to me.

What lens were you using and what AF focus settings?

:agree:

I'm finding the hit-rate to be much higher in low light than it was with my mk2.

My thoughts exactly.

For some of the stuff I do stellar autofocus in difficult conditions is a must, and the MkIII delivers. It's particularly good for moving targets in changing light - the servo focus is about as good as it gets and is damned fast: http://lindsaydobsonphotography.com/blog/london-fashion-week-shooting-the-catwalk/

This is with the 70-300L at f5.6 - my most used lens on the MkIII, it's so versatile.

Gotta say - In my experience so far the 5DIII smokes the 5DII for focus in low light.
If you can't see the button labels cause it is dark, then leave the 5DII in the bag and swap the 5DIII into the widest aperture you have - it works!

Will have to double check. I think I have made a very big school boy error but will wait till tomorrow to confirm. I maybe in for a public flogging...

Hi

I wonder if you did what i did recently i meant to switch IS on instead i switched on manual focus same lens 24-105mm. Camera was happy letting me take the shots funny though as they looked out of focus :bang:

For me it was not a big deal and i also find the low light focus very good indeed.

Hope you sort it

Allan

Folks I'm looking to buy a wide angle read a few differing reviews on the 16-35 mk2, and generally positive comments on the 17-40mm.

However, is there any other wide angle I should be considering from a different manufacturer?

Will be adding the 8-15 in near future for that specific fisheye look.

Hi

Sigma do the 12 24mm I considered that but just bought the 17 40mm.

I felt the 16 35mm was very nice but it does cost twice as much for little extra gain.

Money no object I would have got the extra mm but for me it's a hobby

I used to own the 17-40mm and I was never really happy with my copy... my brother bought the 16-35 mk1 and it blows away the 17-40 I used to own
and presumably the Mk2 should be even better

EPIC FAIL ON MY BEHALF! i had lent my 5dmk3 to my second photographer who had been doing some shots of the children running around the garden, and had turned the AF into servo...in my defence it was dark lmao! 5dmk3 has very good low light focusing, if the user has it in the right mode lol

Now's the time to get servo assigned to the dof preview button so no need to change it physically.. Works like a charm and impossible to forget.

As a non pro would someone clarify please why would servo spoil stationary photographs in dark area.

Sorry to be thick just want to know how to avoid the problem

Cheers

Allan

I don't think it would really? Unless I'm missing something.

I'm off to lapland in Dec. Would like to take pics of the Northern Lights, along with other family holiday photos.

Should I take my 450D that has an on-camera flash, or my 5DIII with no flash at all?

I've stupidly sold my Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC, so in both cases, I will be using a Sigma 24-70 2.8.

I'm thinking 5D for the Northern Lights, but then my family photo's may be pants, as no flash, and it gets dark at 2pm!

Then I'm thinking, 450D with flash would be very handy, but it won't be wide enough for the Nothern Lights, and anything above 800 ISO is noisy.

What would you guys do?

so I had a long day at work today knowing my new 5d3 had arrived at home. When the evening came I just had to go and play and seeing a small glimmer of sun I headed to one of my local landmarks the severn bridge to take some photos with my new toy :)

Nothing overly special but now looking forward to cornwall even more this weekend

Superb! Love everything about that shot. Now I'm totally confused....thanks to you and all the other photos on this thread. I'm debating wether to go for a N***N D800 or the 5D M3.........
JohnyT

I haven't used d800 but i would most certainly recommend 5d3 to someone considering an upgrade.

Have just been back from a two week holiday and even though it was quite a paint at times to carry the gear, the end results were well worth it. I will be posting some more pics in the coming days

You would surprise yourself with the quality of the images that you would get in some seemingly totally dark conditions

Hi everyone thoroughly enjoying reading this thread. Just received notice that my Canon 5D3 has shipped. This 61 year old lady is super excited. This is a special gift to myself :)
Good-fella7777, I love your black and white portrait shot.

lmao ok.. i guess you guys have answered my question.. i'll lug the flash around! :( lol... will come in handy in lighting Rudolf

U don't need a flash with a 5d3. I have taken shots at night without a flash lol the iso performance is phenomenal

This wasn't the problem - Matt's public flogging is coming soon (need to read back).
I don't find the 24-105 too bad; if you want bad try some of the 50mm lenses which aren't USM.

I'm guessing it was more of an issue of waiting for the focus confirmation beep (and not getting it because he was in ai servo) and then assuming it wouldn't focus lock.
