Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

One for the Pixel Grip users..

I was doing a wedding yesterday and towards the end of the day the camera kept turning itself off, much to my horror as i was about 10 mins away from the 1st dance and testing/balancing strobes.

Anyway, the battery indicator in the info panel was still showing 3/4 full, so i was thinking the body had developed a fault, however on going into the menu and checking the battery info, 1 battery (original Canon) was saying 3%, the other (Duracell copy) was saying 100%, so there's the cause.

Anyway my point/question, have any other pixel grip users noticed this, surely it should use the both batteries at an equal rate, otherwise where does the extra battery capacity of using a grip come in.

Also i noticed that the grip wouldn't work with just 1 battery in, my other canon ones have in the past.

Just a heads up to you guys really as i had a mammoth stress session taking a hand strap off then the grip off so i could put the working battery into the body and get going again.
 
Mine works with just 1 battery in, whatever position it's in the battery info screen shows it in that position too. My spare 2 batts are from Sigma Accessories and I have 1 Canon branded stock battery too.

Maybe you have revision 1 of the grip which had battery issues?
 
My Sigma batteries are a bit odd though :p I can get 900+ shots from the Canon battery but sometimes even at 250 shots in on the Sigma ones the battery will read 53% but turn it off for an hour and back on then the reading is 60% or more.

That's with no grip attached btw. Such is the way with cheap batteries I guess! Still, they serve good as backup batteries so I'll keep em and they do seem to charge fast so I can continue shooting with another spare while the dead one charges in the corner.

Just done a bit of further testing with the grip and it seems that one side of it is absolutely dead.. So not using any power, and explains why it wouldn't work with just one battery in.
Putting the battery in the good side it fired up with just one in. (should've tried that yesterday).
Going back anyway and I'll be sure to test the replacement a bit more prior to using it on a wedding.

They had none in stock when I tried to order, bit the bullet and got canon

Be careful, my wife welcomed me getting the 70 200 2.8 IS II , week later she said she'd like a new car!! Just couldn't refuse could I lol

Superb! Love everything about that shot. Now I'm totally confused....thanks to you and all the other photos on this thread. I'm debating wether to go for a N***N D800 or the 5D M3.........

i'm in the same boat as I am starting again after a forced 7 month break from photography. Strongly leaning to the 5d3 though
 
Hi everyone thoroughly enjoying reading this thread. Just received notice that my Canon 5D3 has shipped. This 61 year old lady is super excited. This is a special gift to myself :)

Got my 5D III with 17-40mm and i gotta say brill camera, some of the buttons are taking a wee bit of getting used to but rest is fairly straight forward.

What does everyone think now that the Canon 6D has been announced? Great to see another FF camera from Canon but is it much of an upgrade from the 5d II?

Ignore last comment i see there's a raging debate thread already about it :p

Probably a discussion for the 6D thread that is going on but IMO the 6D is not meant to be an upgrade to the 5DmkII, that's the mkIII. The 5DmkII was a winner despite it's shortcomings, if the 6D gives more of the same and then some (GPS, WiFi, new sensor etc) so a decent street price it will succeed.

Ironically, those four were all taken with the 5DII.
By the time I took what turned out to be my favourite images of the evening I'd already swapped the bodies over pairing the 5DIII with f1.4 to give it a fighting chance in the non-existent light.
Hence those images were taken on the long lens with the 5DII and the quality is tolerable but far from perfect.
They would be SO much cleaner with the 5DII.
If I was doing more weddings, then it would be instant justification to trade the 5DII for another 5DIII.

Fantastic Duncan.......love the lighting and composition.....and yep looks like it will print up easily......hard to believe the ISO is 12800........help me I don't know what to do......:)

Believe it or not...
That was taken in aperture priority and Auto ISO :)
It's not just that I'm lazy, over the years I learned to trust this combination on my 5DII and it works incredibly well.
I set the ISO cap to what I have already proven to myself will comfortably print to A3 without noise reduction.

On the 5DIII I've got Auto ISO capped to 12800 and min shutter speed set to 1/125s.
Conditions are so dark the 5DIII has already hit the ISO limit and has dropped the shutter speed below my lower limit and below the traditional 1 / focal length rule of thumb.
Got away with it though!

Allan, thank you. I am sure it will. Won't make me a better photographer :) , but can have fun trying . BTW 5D3 has arrived , battery charged, but sadly can't get out with it today.

I have now printed this image at A3+ with no noise reduction.
The only visible noise is in the lightest part of the sky just above the treeline; it's very subtle and I cannot see it more than a foot away from the print.

At this size, it is also apparent that I focussed on the Chap as the Gal's face is ever so slightly soft. The depth of sharp focus doing this print equivalent of pixel peeping looks to be only about 12 inches, even at this distance away from the subject! :nuts:

The 5DIII is utterly amazing!

thats just over £2600

kit price same site just over £2800

Buying them separate works out better as well as you have a proper box for the lens and not a white one.
