Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

What do you find complicated about it? As I'm hoping to get one, foresight may be helpful to me :D

I was at All eyes on Korea(thame festival) yesterday and when i was taking some action shots, i find it hard to catch up with the action as i have to keep changing the focus zone from left to right and so for but I'm sure this problem will go away as i get better with this camera as i was a nikon user. Also it was my 2nd day using that camera :bonk:

Isn't that something you would need to do with any camera? All you need to do is to set the multi-controller (joystick) to directly control AF point selection. For some odd reason it is disabled by default. I can't think of any reason why one would not want to make use of it to quickly set AF points. This is no different to any other Canon DSLR above the Rebel line.

If your subject stands out well from the surroundings you might even be able to set all AF points active and let the camera track the subject as it moves within the frame. You can also set the camera up to have different AF points set depending on the camera orientation, so if you are shooting people, for example, you can have the top AF point selected regardless of which way the camera is held or rotated, ready to aim at the face/eye etc..

thanks for the tip, I never taken any action/sports photography so usually i just set to Auto AF but the stage was in front of the sun so it was in the shade and really dark, i was not going to let full auto af to ruin my chances.

My last camera was a D5100 so it did not have any of these function and I have never really use AI servo before.

I too read reviews saying the AF system is complicated. Now I upgraded from a 40D, owned the D70s before than and a 350D/300D and use a friend's D700s/D800.

I found nothing complex about the AF system, it is logical and works really well although 60 points when manually selecting a point does require thumb uber-micro at times :p

Anyway, more 5D pics!

Quick question for all you 5D3 owners: do you miss not having the precision focussing screen for MF? It's one thing that is bothering me when I think of upgrading from the 5Dc.

How do you mean?

You mean the way that the AF point lights up when you manually focus and get the AF point right?

Not a problem because the viewfinder is so large and bright you can easily see the AF point in focus.

With the focussing screen, when you MF at say 1.4 you can clearly see the focus point even though the dof is so shallow, which is brilliant. With the stock screen, I could never tell what was in focus till I took the shot and reviewed the image on the LCD. Ever since installing it, I could never imagine going back to the stock screen, which is why I was concerned on how you all cope without it on the mk3. :)

Thats really useful info. With the 5D2 only having 9 AF points, what you want in focus didn't always coincide with an AF point. So I too used the precision focussing screen with the 5D2.

I love the tracking AF, focus on the subject and then move to the third and it stays tracked

I've ordered a 5D III body but what lens should i get? a 17-40mm f4L or a 24-105mm f4L, i like to shoot landscape but not sure the 17-40 is gonna have enough reach, what should i buy 1st or should i try to get a 24-70mm but these are fetching silly money now there in short supply.

Believe it or not but I've been using the Sigma 50mm 1.4 for landscapes and it's so good at f2, get down low and you get wonderful depth of field effects.

I have the 17-40 too btw and it's very good.

I use the 17-40 for my landscapes, and a 24-105 for general purpose walkabout stuff. The 17-40 works really well on the 5D3.

I would say the 24-105, a good walkabout lens, it was the first lens I bought to go with a 30D and when I bought my first full frame it really came to life.

Mine sits on the MK3 nearly all the time and is wide enough for me for most landscapes, personally I found the 24-70 a heavy lens to carry about on my MK2 and sold it on before buying the MK3.

You can add the 17-40 later.

Anyone know where to get a replacement battery charger for the 5D3's LP-E6 that has a corded connection. Can't say I'm sold on the direct to plug connection. One that recharged two at once would be a bonus but not necessary.

Regards...

Didn't yours come with a corded charger?

I thought they were standard.

Corded chargers are definitely not standard, assuming it was imported it depends on what market it was intended for.

I bought mine from Kerso, so probably the US market. It has a fold out double prong. It works, it's just that it is a bit unstable when plugged in. It really has to be plugged in just right if you know what I mean. Hence I would prefer a corded one.

Yours is a US one from kerso hence double prong.
