Nothing wrong with my 40D, it's a great body, But:

I'm in full on 'justifying a 5D3 with any reason' at the moment, don't force me into keeping the 40D I'm trying to get away from :p :D

There is lots of stuff wrong with your 40d.it doesn't have 61 af points :)
 
Make no mistake the ISO between the 40D and the 5d3 is humongous
I still have my 40D but most ISO that I would use is 800 in most cases and at a couple of ice skating arenas used 1600 but the results are not good 3200 hideous

the 5D3 opens up a whole new ball game now being confident to use settings I would not of dreamt of 2 years ago

much as I like my 40D the 5d3 is far better in every area
 
Just received the L plate from Sunwayphoto (CGUK) on eBay. Initial thoughts are very good.
 
Got mine a while back, shot one wedding, some portraiture and general stuff with it, LOVE it!!!

I just don't get enough playtime but, having sold my (2nd) 5D I...something I vowed never to do:D, I still have my 1Ds II (love it to bits) but this is one seriously great camera.

Some may or may not remember that I wanted to cross over to the dark side a while back...NO MORE!

If ANYONE is thinking of getting it...just DO IT!
 
You can happily leave the 5D in auto ISO, I have it set to range from 100 to 12,800 :p

Also, Pixel grip arrived today, looks and feels excellent :d

Do you use it with any large lens with Manfrotto tripod mounts by any chance?

I'm curious as to whether there is any interference with the Pixel grip and the QR plate release lever on Manfrotto tripods.

Also, how responsive is the shutter release button, same as the main button on the body or different?

Hi,

The shutter release action is the same as the one on the body itself, in fact the only buttons that are not as the 3 buttons along the right back panel for FEL/FEC etc, they are soft press buttons on the body but microswitch buttons on the grip. The controller joystick is the same as on the body as well.

I don't have a Manfrotto tripod only a Red Snapper one with ball head and mounting plate and have no troubles with that. My lens range doesn't go beyond 85mm so can't comment on how it is on long lenses although I can't imagine it being any different to the Meike one on my 40D which I used with the 70-200 F4 L IS and 2.8 L IS.

CGUK doesn't seem to have anything on eBay at the moment, was looking for one of those L brackets too......

I ordered Tuesday this week and received it Wednesday. Top service..!

I managed to get back up to CadWest yesterday for the afternoon and finally broke my Typhoon duck... We had a message saying that the first of 1sqn's Typhoons was on the way down from RAF Leuchars so we waited... and waited... and finally... :D

Ok thanks for the reply.

Sometimes with the aftermarket grips the base of the grip restricts you from being able to mount longer lenses on the tripod easily. I'd never seen the Pixel ones until I saw it in this thread, it looks quite good.
 
I imagine with a monster lens like a long prime you'd have issues but with a 70-200 F4 L there would be no issues at all on a tripod, certainly none hand held :)

The Long Lenses have the tripod collar on the Lens unlike using the small lenses attatching the tripod to the bottom of the camera

Noise reduction, vignette, darkened, so hiding the noise a little, then small size for web use hides a lot of sins. Perfectly acceptable image for that use.

Serious question - why? does it fit better, not slide off the shoulder as much, more comfy? I couldn't get on with an Optech one as it was comfy but slid off my shoulder too much

Another possibly silly Q,

Does anyone find that the screen on the back stays quite dark when previewing some times then after a little while brightens up again??
 
I'm looking for an SD card (basically for backing up to), but i'm confused with all the different variations of the same card, i'm after a couple of 16gb ones and have looked at the Lexar Pro ones and the Sandisk Extremes, but what difference do they make

For instance having a Lexar there's a UHS I version that's 400x speed or a 133x speed without the UHS I?

Or Sandisk have a card with Video on it or one without it, i've never bought SD cards before so don't know what on earth it all means.

And obviously as it's only ever going to be used as an in camera back up card in case a CF card corrupts i don't want to be spending twice as much as i need to.

Oh it is going into the 5D3 in case anyone's wondering why i put it in this thread.

There are reported speed restrictions using the SD card slot as a back up due to the disappointingly low spec of the slot on the camera. You might not need to buy as high a spec as you think you need. I think 133x is about the limit if I remember.

Remember that putting an SD card in will limit the burst rate on the main CF flash card as the camera will only wrte at the speed of the slowest card!
