Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Btw, is there any reason NOT to use silent shutter all the time except when you need 6fps?

Apparently there is no difference in wear & tear according to Canon...

Thats interesting. I was thinking that myself. Why didnt they just make the SILENT mode as standard, but then make the setting "BOOST" mode for more FPS ??

It may be for odd folk like me i like the sound of the shutter though use silent in say a church

Allan

LOL, im sure there is a valid reason as to why, just cant think of one.

Ive got my Meike grip coming in a day or so, so will put a mini review up when i have had a play.

£65 for grip and 2 batteries. Something which i used for my Mark 2 and had it on successfully for 3 years :)

Because, as it powers the mirror both up and down more slowly, there's an increased delay between pressing the release and the shutter opening. Not so good for timing action shots accurately.

Doh. Of course, higher shutter lag. So obvious :)

Does anyone know if there is an option to have the main LCD turn off as you put your eye to the EP?

I could really do with this! Sure you can on the mk2? Or maybe it was the 500d, I've forgotten already!

Silent shutter is awesome when shooting wildlife - and also during wedding ceremonies

I thought id chip in if anyone fancies using this camera with the Eye-Fi card.
Ive been very impressed.

It works like a dream.
I didnt even need to change the setup of the card from my old Nikon i was using for events.
Put the card in, made sure the Mac was connected to the same wifi as i normally use and away it went. Ive streamed roughly 350 photos this week and not one has taken more than a few seconds. I have the quality on M jpeg and they fly though.
Even when i switch to another network and take some photos then switch back to the eye-fi they get instantly transfered.

Love it.

Good to know about the Eye-fi, been wondering if it would work for iphone/ipad transfers.. it's SUPPOSED to but I could foresee some issues. The main use would be for the wife to make FB updates on the fly :D Now she uses the iPhone camera and is never happy with it but at least can share instantly.

Don't think you can. I'm sure it goes off when you half press the shutter.

It was in the 450d

Doesn't do that either it seems, just been having a quick play. Looks like I'll have to turn it off completely and use the top LCD only.

5D II with eye-Fi works flawlessly with ShutterSnitch on the ipad, so there's no reason it shouldn't work as well with the 5D III.

Not tried it with the iPad yet but it works brilliantly with my iPhone.

Thought id write a mini review of the 3rd party Meike grip.

Ive used an official grip on a 7D, Meike grip on 5D mkii (still on it), Meike grip on Nikon D7000.

Bought from eBay for £65 which included two 3rd party batteries, I was expecting exactly the same as my 5D2 Meike grip. It was.
Took 4 days to arrive “from the UK” (OK, most likely from China via Slough) and came in perfect condition.

The 2 batteries slot straight into the grip, not via an attachment. There is a separate atachment but that is for the usual AA batteries.

Charged the batteries, slotted them in, attached the grip and gave it a spin.

Ergonomics – Not as good as an offical grip as there is no recess for the thumb apart from where the grip meets the camera

Buttons – There is no stick controller, but having never used it on my 5D2 or my 5D3 that doesn’t bother me. There is the AF-ON, metering and selection button along with the finger scroll wheel. On and off switch

Use – Perfect. No issues what so ever. Only used it for about 50 shots, but works straight out of the box (after turning the switch to ON ;)

I bought this as I didn’t want to pay extortionate money for an official grip, especially having such a good experience with the Meike grip for my 5D2 which I have been using for 3 years.

So, do you buy this one or the official one?
Up to you.
This one cost me £65 with 2 batteries and should last me years.
The official one costs over £200 and again should last years.

The only thing I have heard people say is that it invalidates the warranty. That’s not an issue unless Canon can prove you were using the grip at the time and that the grip was at fault. i.e not going to happen
Besides I have used 3 Meike grips and know countless others who have used them without any issues.

My spare £150 is going toward some lovely glass thank you :)

Are you using a CF at the same time? is it causing any bottlenecks with write speeds as reported in a few sites?

I have resisted using the CD card because I do not want a hit in the write speed.

Also, can we set up the Eye-fi card in a way that will take the images from CF and transfer them too if you have both mem slots filled? I know long shot, but thought I would ask.

Not sure how true this SD card effect actually is!
I did some quick tests while setting my 5DIII up for photographing low flying jets at the Mach Loop.
Shooting in RAW at 6fps, I took 24 frames before there was any pause for a full buffer.
From what I've read, I hadn't expected the number of frames to be exactly the same with the CF in and out the camera, but they were!

As always - do your own tests!
My cards are...
CF is a 16Gb SanDisk Extreme Pro, 90 MB/s, UDMA 7
SD is a 16Gb SanDisk Extreme Pro, 95 MB/s, speed rating 10

mine arrived last night, it seems quite a big step forward from my 1dsmk2 and 1d mk2n !!!

the menus and operating seemed incredibly complicated at first, but i spent my lunch hour out using it and it's feeling more normal now. Definitely sits better in my hand with the (3rd party) grip fitted too.

High ISO is remarkable, truly amazing. Auto ISO is new to me, and now I see how clean ISO10,000 is, I 'get it' :)

Tried the Multiple Exposure setting tonight.

Hmm - need to play with more to see what works well. I think the main problem here was that I set it for 9 shots.

Any tips welcome.

Think 3 or 4 would have been enough as he was standing in the same place. More ok if he was moving forwards/backwards.

Good effect though.

Yes def worth playing around with to see what works well in different situations.

Ah ha... had a quick look last night, there's two ways to turn on the info screen, pressing the info button, or pressing the Q button.

When the screen is turned off, press the Q button, this should switch it on and you get the info screen, now half press the shutter, and voila! It's off :)

Question, on my 450D, I could use my thumb at the back and index finger on the wheel to change the aperture, the only way I can do this is by using the Q button, but it needs to be set on the aperture first. I want to be able to change it whilst I'm in my viewfinder, anyone know of an alternative way of doing this?

Just use the big rear wheel right under that Q button :D Just remember to check the lock switch below it.

No need to hold down buttons to change aperture in M or exposure compensation in Av/Tv.

Welcome to real cameras :)

Mine is out for delivery. Am scared I won't have a clue how to use it :D

Just look at the canon learning USA tutorials for the 5D MKIII. These are very useful.

Put a lens on, add a memory card, turn on, focus and press shutter release. Simples.
