Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

You can get very very fast zoom on the 5D2 with magic lantern (I notice you still have one). It's either instant 100% when you press zoom or about double the zoom speed or normal painfully slow...

My girlfriend was my low light subject last night.

If you press the Q on the back, goto the icon on the far right, 1 down you can set custom functions to buttons. The SET you can set to magnify for 1 touch playback at a zoomed level to check sharpness.

Here's a quick one from Brands Hatch this weekend. The AF is rather good :D

ok done that, but the only option i get is to make it basically emulate what the magnify button does. i.e. this one, third from the bottom:

I still then have to use the scroll tog to zoom in and out. How do I set it to a particular zoom level so it goes straight there with one press? Right now it's the same effect as pressing the magnify button, which I already have, so why would I want another button that does the same thing?

It's more ease of use having it on the SET button for me, you can reach across with your thumb and hit it rather then having to take move your left hand from a long lens

I see. Makes sense, but it can only zoom to that level?

i am planning to go america in september. any chances that:

1. prices of the 5d3 as a whole will go down abit?
2. the price difference between here and US is near£1k mark?

So, maybe OT but related....

BG-E11 arrived today and i have to day that it really beefs it up having just got used to shooting without. I have spade hands, so this is welcomed!

Whats in the box:
Grip
LPE6 Tray
AAA (6) Tray

The function buttons feel good and welcome the toggle button. The battery compartment is located on the side opposed to the BG-E6 and is sealed a bit better.

One great idea is the Door slot on the stem! You'll never loose it again... Touch wood!!

Off to test the whole thing tomorrow at the Mach Loop!!

So here are a few images.

Thanks for taking the time to show this level of detail - is really helpful. Interesting to see that they seem to have separated off the AF-ON button with a lip unlike the previous grips I've had, I imagine to aid finding the button more easily.

My BG-E11 has just arrived!! Pics up later on as SWMBO has given chores before toys!!

i see you are in MK Chris, so where did you source the BG-E11?

Well I've just checked on the DigitalRev site and they've got them in stock now but Jeez at 299.00 seems a little on the steep side

Well, after searching online and a pending trip tomorrow, I managed to find an ad from the Southampton branch of LCE.

Got carried away with decorating and forgot to call them until lunch and the chap said that the last one had gone but referred to the Lincoln branch as a Canon Outlet.

They had stock and could do next day. Yes I paid over the top £329 opposed to waiting for the likes of Calumet and Kerso but judge as you wish :) I wanted one for a planned trip and got one.

My 5D3 came today. I can't believe how those extra focus points make composition easier. Need to go through the manual and read up on the menu and CF options, quite a bit has changed. What an amazing camera though.

Joe - how is your Sigma 85 working on your 5D3? Did you need to perform any MFA with it?

I need +9 on my 5D2, be interesting to see how it goes on the 5D3.

Blimey, didn't tke you long to make the leap :)

did you keep the mark 2 or sell to help fund?

I didn't need any MA on the sigma, but I didn't need any on my mark 2 either. It's working very nicely indeed!

Thanks for that Joe - strangely, the Sigma 85 is spot on with the 5D3, it needed +9 on the 5D2 but all my other lenses were fine.

I did indeed upgrade to the 5D3 significantly earlier than I had intended, I was going to wait until half way through the life cycle of the camera, but sadly, reading the 5D3 owners thread and indeed seeing your own work and reading your own experiences made it an irresistible proposition as i think we have quite a similar shooting style.

I did indeed have to sacrifice my 70-200 2.8 to be able to afford it though, i had always intended to sell the 5D2 since whilst it would be very nice to have the 35mm on one camera and the 85/135 on the other, it's perhaps a luxury I would find hard to justify being just an enthusiast, and weddings are just not my thing so i can get away without a backup body. I know I will miss my 70-200, but I've kind of wound up being a prime shooter by default because I love the look from fast lenses, and 2.8 lenses just don't do it for me. Having said that, I regret selling my 100mm macro. I will buy that again someday. I won't use it often, but none of my lenses focus especially closely.

I have to say, this camera really a joy to behold. the only thing that annoys me is the function of the magnification button on the LCD, i preferred how it worked on the 5D2, just keep pressing it to zoom in rather than press it once and use the wheel to zoom. Everything else really seems to be a step forward in ergonomics. I changed the behaviour of the little joy stick to choose the focus point without pressing the button, that makes it really easy to get the composition exactly how i want it quickly.

Oh, and does anybody know where I can get a decent screen protector for the top and back LCD panel?

I hear everything you wrote. The 100mm macro is the one lens I miss too, in fact I just heard tonight there is £60 cash back from WEX so am really considering just rebuying brand new.

Also, I can't agree more with the magnify issue. The set button work around listed above does help for the right handed among us, but toggling to zoom in just feels weird, especially when I still have the mark 2 to jostle the different use with.

Did you change the dof button to switch servo with one shot yet?

Went out this afternoon to try out my EF 70-200 f/2.8 L MKII and the 5D MKIII.

Didn't realise I had left the ISO at 1000 so forgive me on this one.

Beautiful shot.

Is anyone else intending to get, or has already got, the GP-E2 geo-tagger?

Seemingly they were released in Japan at the back end of last week and some have shipped in the US and mainland Europe but they are still very thing on the ground.

Hopefully Kerso will get his hands on some soon.

Anyone know if Giottos do a screen protector yet for it? Or any other decent manufacturer for that matter? I have searched around but can only locate cheap ebay mobile phone style screen protectors which I have decided to pass on...

I'm looking for the GPS unit too - Bristol Cameras have had one listed at £275 for a long time now, but they tend not to stock items and just order them from the manufacturer when the customer orders it. Would love to find someone that actually has them in stock...

What are you guy's take on back up?

Slot 1 - CF card - RAW
Slot 2 - SDXC - sRAW?

I normally shoot 8G cards on my 5Dii so ideally I don't want to change the backup card on the day, it'll just stay there until I am done.

Thoughts?

For me:

CF - RAW
SD - L/jpg

Well, I don't want to be processing jpeg if something happen on the RAW, sRAW seems to be best compromise between the 2?

I could get the 128G SD card but its £136 each.

The reason I want a large card is I have 100G of CF cards, so the SD card is back up for that. I will have 2 x 5Diii and I shoot both together, the unknown (and I never really check) is what is the percentage and balance between the 2 on the day. I could put in 64G in both and hope they will be fine even at RAW. But i know for certain it will fit sRAW though.

Hmm, you've got me thinking now.

When I go away for a week or more I generally take 4+ Sandisk Ultra (30MB/s) 16GB CF cards. I never wanted to go bigger than this on the basis that there was a potential to lose too many images in one go.

For back-up though a single 64GB SDHC would do the trick nicely in the SD slot. And here was me thinking of getting 4+ 16GB SDHC.

Sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees :bonk:.

Lol, exactly! You will be changing the CF but you leave the SD alone, but it has to be large enough to store the same amount of photos as CF. The beauty of SD card is they are cheaper. The cost of a single 8G CF card is around £30, where £55 will be enough for 64G card (8x the storage at less than half the price).

I just got a 64G card for the imminent arrival of my 5Diii :D

What you've got to remember is that the SD is also alot slower then CF that is why they are so cheap. class 10 SD is still only 30mb/s

Still nowhere near the 90mb/s of compact flash cards.

Quick google Class 10 cards are 10mb/s

The CF I use are SANDISK ULTRA and SANDISK EXTREME 3 (these were later branded as the ULTRA. These are rated at 30mb/s and I've never had an issue with the mk2 at 3.9FPS and not one I've so far noticed at 6FPS on the mk3.

On the mk3 I have been shooting with these and a 16GB Sandisk Extreme SD rated at 45mb/s as back-up (RAW to both cards) and I haven't noticed any slowdown as a result.

Edit: After doing a bit of research the mk3 apparently doesn't handle anything faster than UHS-1 for SD so anything faster than a 45mb/s card would seem like a waste of money.
