Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Thanks to all for the advice and reassurance, I may give Kerso a go!

This may have already been posted, but whats all this about a fault with the 5DIII as reported in a monthly magazine about light leaking from the LCD top plate backlight when its on during an exposure? Canon have dismissed it as very minimal but still for a camera that costs £3k. Not good.

It's not really an issue, it is only apparent when taking photos with the lens or body cap on.......

Where's the best (cheapest) place to order a 5d3 from?

The two don’t actually go together James, cheapest isn’t always the best.

Cheapest would be off ebay direct from China but I wouldn’t recommend it :nono:

Best, depends upon your point of view. You want to be sure you have a full UK Warranty that will be honoured by Canon UK in my view so then you need to consider who has stock and at what price. Ian Kerso at http://www.flashcamera.co.uk/canon-eos-5d-mark-iii-digital-camera-body-only/ has them at a very good price. They are imported direct from the USA and Canon UK honour the warranty.

OH NO :bang: Please lets not do the light leak thing all over again :bonk:

Gordon, if you pop along to pages 8 and 9 onwards in this thread you will find all the detail there is.

It's not an issue now as Canon have done a "fix" which has cured the light leakage and allows you to take a pic with the len/bodycap on .

I'm glad I'm not the only one that's getting seriously fed of up talk of light leak and even more about the fact that they've used tape, as I pointed out in another thread, tape is used in all sorts of industries for temp and permanent fixes including shock horror the civil aviation industries  but there are different specialist and in some cases very expensive grades around I think some people are not getting this point :(

My apologies :)

Won't mention it again

We use tape on our electronic equipment we send 20 thousand feet into the earths crust at temps up to 400degrees plus, and it comes back fine.

Moving on from light leaks and electric tape does anyone use any PP software that isn't Lightroom or CS6 for their 5D3 RAW files?

I'm trying LR4.1 and CS6 on eval and I'm not getting on with LR with my workflow and the cost of CS6 isn't worth it for me. I used to use PS Elements 8 with my 500D RAW files which was fine.
I understand Adobe is bringing out PSE11 in September but I can't wait that long!

Thanks

Tethering...

So i have plugged into LR4 via USB etc exactly the same as i did with my 5DII and followed the process:

Start Tethered capture etc
The bar comes up and has Canon 5DIII in it etc
However... Every time you go to press the shutter is wont fire and says 'busy'...

Anyone else had the same? Or am i being a MONG?

Phase One are saying the SDK for the 5D3 isn't released yet hence no tethered support in Capture One yet, I don't know if LR is the same.

Have Capture One also but only tried with LR..

Odd how it sees the Camera in the Tether Bar...but doesn't allow it to function.

Anyone had success with tethering in LR? Or is it another update?

After being stupidly busy with work and life in general I finally got a chance to get out again with the camera for a walk down the coast.

We ended up having the inevitable tray of chips which provoked a bit of interest of the feathered variety. I couldn't resist giving the AF a workout. I was struggling for focal length and the exposure was a bit of a challenge as the sky had went grey again (just for a change), but otherwise I was blown away. (setting were 61 point auto selection and AI servo, Case 1.)

BTW, one of his mates **** on me shortly before this. I guess it is supposed to be good luck...

I've ordered mine today, roll on 15th :D coming from Nikon D700 so should be interesting learning Canon

I've heard the new 5D/3 focusing modes are tricky to master, complicated from what I hear (?)

Any owners tell me different, or does it just take time learning it?

Can't say that I've had any problems. Just a few more options to choose from. But I'm using the same nethod I've used for my 5d Mk1 and my 1Ds. Stops me getting confused :)

Coming from the mk2 there has been a bit of a learning curve for me. There's now a lot of options to play with. I wouldn't say that it if difficult or complicated though, just a lot of it.

Having been a centre point/focus recompose user for a while with the mk2 it took a bit of time to have the confidence in the outer points being capable on the mk3, but they surely are.

It'S interesting that you have changed brand. Did you consider the D800, and what made you decide on the 5D3?

I've always liked the 5D2 and had the D700 & 5D2 at the same time at one point but just hated the focusing system on the Canon. 36MP on the Nikon for what I do is just complete overkill and would sap up too much card and hard disk space as well as processing time. With what i've read in reviews the focussing on the 5D3 is superb so that's my only real gripe fixed hopefully. 22Megapixels is a nice amount.

I'll certainly miss the CLS system as I found that incredibly good.

Posted details in the People section.

Bit miffed so far, my order hasn't progressed at all (DigitalRev).
The shipping still estimates 15th-17th but seeing as that's 2 days from HK I highly doubt it.
Maybe I should have waited for Kerso stock ;)

Cheers Gary!

All looking good so far with DigitalRev. My order progressed through rapidly on the online tracking and it went from DigitalRev to a plane in 3 hours and is now out for delivery today! :D That's 24 hours direct from Hong Kong to my door, pretty impressive.

Has anyone bought an L bracket for theirs yet?

No but I want too. The Kirk looks like the better choice at the mo as the RRS fit isn't quite right..?

It looks great does the mk3.

I decided after selling my mk2 to go for the mk3, but after all i ended up getting a mk2 again with 24-105L all shiny and new and a new tripod 190xproB which is only £99 in Jessops at the moment.

Maybe get the mk3 one day.

5D arrived, less then 23 hours from HK to delivery, pretty good!
Camera is awesome, although bit of a learning curve coming from Nikon.
Nice to see they have brought some features across though. 1 click zoom with the Set button I used a lot with Nikon to check sharpness. Looking forward to testing it at Brands Hatch this Saturday
