Canon 5D MKIII official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D MKIII

Well it refers to Canons advisory notice and the videos posted elsewhere over the weekend, so I think it's old news.....but good news at the same time as canon will certainly want to get it sorted before the entire world shouts about it :D

So basically Canon have said yeah there is an issue and we're looking into a solution and once sorted we will be in touch to arrange to fix your camera, so what's the big issue  this issue only becomes apparent when you do something with your camera that for the life of me I cannot think why you would so it

I just hope that mine comes tomorrow now the issues with DHL seems to be sorted out  :suspect:

Is it really wrong that even though there is nothing whatsoever wrong with my D700 and excellent lenses I have, with the fact that my kit out performs me by a long way, but I still want one of these?!

 No, come on over into the light and out of the darkness :naughty:

:woot: mine is on the van and coming to me, apparently

I've just worked out the AF settings so that the AF points in the viewfinder follow the subject about. My word is that clever, I'm loving that!

That is clever, since opening the parcel this afternoon, I've felt like a complete newbie, 450D to 5D3 is a like night and day, I'm just starting to get my head around the buttons, I have to say I'm loving the Q button

 It's taken me a few days to work that one out.

Have you got the DOF preview button set up for One-Shot/AI Servo toggle and the joystick for focus point selection yet? Works like a charm.

I've not changed the DOF Preview yet but I've got the joystic set for the focus points  it is great  I'll probably not change the DOF button for the simple reason nearly all my work is ONESHOT anyway, I bet I use Servo for about 5 percent of my photos

I was the same with the mk2, but now that AI Servo seems to work so well I can see me using it much more.

Just a general comment on the ergonomics, they seem to have really though things through this time round. Everything is very intuitive and customisable. If I had to criticise anything, then they could have made the back AF-On and * button a bit bigger than before. Not a massive drama though.

I'm not near my camera at the mo. can you tell me what you did?

Yeah, engage the 61-point auto selection AF mode (page 77 of the manual).

Then you need to be in AI Servo AF. You can still manually select the initial focus point but then this follows the subject as the AF point(s) which maintain focus are displayed.

You can see it just as easily by focusing on a stationary object and moving the camera about a bit, the little squares stay with the subject. Way cool!

I'll give it a go, cheers.

I still don't get why people are shooting with there lens caps on  I'm still confident that if this is a major issue then canon will have them back to fix at some point

Matt

I suppose a 10 stopper would be similar to a lens cap and therefore there is a risk of light leak on long exposures using one

I do think Canon maybe rushed this out to compete with the new nikons and maybe the reason this has slipped through but it seems the new nikons are having problems of there own so maybe they rushed theres out to trump the canons

That's the problem, companies used to test and test and test until product was ready, even then they didn't always get it right.
It's the same with the 1dx, they announced it have a product to compete with the D4, even if it wasn't ready.

Apple seem to have got away with the iphone4 antenna issue, even after some appalling PR gaffs like saying Nokia etc have the same problem, so maybe Canon are big enough to get away with this one, although after the 1dmk3 fiasco, I doubt it.

Not too sure either Canon or Apple got away with anything on both the iphone4 and the 1D MIII they were, I fancy, rather expensive mistakes

Steve

The Apple solution was a refund (few takers) or to give away a case "worth" £25 that cost pence to make, don't think Apple's cash pile noticed.
In global terms, relative to the brand they got away with it as the iPad/iphone4S sales suggest.

when this happens though you can't select the start point for the focus can you? Isn't it automatic selection from the start? How does the camera know what you wanted to focus on in the first place in the scene?

Only with One Shot, the manual states that this tends to focus on the nearest subject.

With AI Servo, you can manually select the initial AF point as described on p74.

I've got mine set up so I dab the AF-On on the back select the initial focus point with the joystic and then reselect AF-On to engage the servo tracking. Works like a charm.

yes I just tried it, it did work. Can't say the results were perfect though but I am usually shooting at 1.6 so it's maybe a bit much to expect it to keep up at that dof.

I find it better to track one af point and move my camera with it because then I am also controlling the same composition as I take my shots. By letting the camera track it across the af points it's essentially changing the composition right?

Yeah maybe f/1.6 is a big ask!

You're right about the composition changing and it won't be useful for every scenario but it will have it's uses.

I certainly won't be shooting like this often, nice knowing I can now though.

sorry to change the subject slightly... but has any off you went overkill and bought a giottos screen protector / similiar ..or have you just left it the way it came.

sorry to change the subject yet again!
Regarding the CR2 files.

CS5 cant handle them.

Can LR4? [which I dont have]

yes I think it can as it has the updated camera raw

I've not bought any optional extras except for remote release, 'Shoot' one is £2.41 from Amazon inc delivery.

I've got an XO Skins one on order. In the interim I've butchered a spare one I had lying around for my smartphone.

The latest version of ACR can handle the raw files I understand. Also LR 4.1RC (Release Candidate) can too, I'm using the latter.

The screen can be replaced anyway so no point adding another screen....

and yes 4.1RC works, that's what i am using as well....

Thanks to James, Chris and Martin for your swift replies.

Does anyone know the best place to buy it from?

Eric

Aye, I realise that.

However, I used a screen protector on my Mk2 also (a Martin Fields) as the procedure of taking a hair dryer to the old screen to soften the adhesive before removing it perturbed me a bit.

When I sold it the new owner had a screen which was as fresh as a daisy. I personally don't see any harm in them. A decent one applied correctly doesn't impede you and it's a faff free way of keeping the scratches at bay.

Canon CA and UK Suspending EOS 5D Mark III Shipments

Wednesday, April 18, 2012

I have not seen anything official yet, but I am receiving multiple reports (thank you for sending them) that Canon Canada and Canon UK are suspending shipments of the new Canon EOS 5D Mark III until the "Light Leak" issue is resolved.

This all seems a bit crazy to me right now. My only thought is that I'm glad that I have my 5D III already.

Phew glad I already have mine then.

:plusone:

Mind you, my plans to get into "back of lens cap" photography will have to stay on hold for now. As will my attempts to capture the beauty of midnight in the coal house.

Seriously though, there doesn't seem to be any official confirmation of a suspension of delivery.

That would be a :plusone: :plusone:

From me because there is no plus two

Mine should be here tomorrow, looking forward to it. Another thumbs up for Kerso for a smooth easy deal.

Good to know :thumbs: personally I used DigitalRev who were brilliant :thumbs: there was one hick-up that delayed me receiving it for a day which naturally I was screwing about because I wanted it in my hands but that was not DigitalRev's fault it was the courier and DigitalRev got on the case and there was a note written on the package stating to the courier that it must be delivered that day no excuses :lol: so I guess someone at DR really gave them the what for :lol;

Yes Me too from Kerso
