Canon 5d mk3 any amateurs buying ?

As someone who owns 4 5DM2's, I'm actually not that sold on the 5DMK3. Sure it is definitely an upgrade and probably has killer AF and high ISO. But I'm actually hoping the 1DX and 5D3 will make the 1DsMK3 a steal, which has the solid AF, dual card slot and 5DMK2 like high ISO performance. I'm not disparaging the 5DMK3 or those lucky enough to buy one, I think for some people like me, it's not a convincing leap.

I think you're right. The 5D mk2 is still a brilliant camera and provided you don't need the Mk3 specific features then I don't see the reason to upgrade either.

I was planning on getting the 5D mkii and reduced price and have now been lured into buying the mkiii. I'm an amature looking into assisting at some weddings and possibly earning some money in the future.

Cant wait.

Hi guys
What exactly does the 1DS3 offer you that the 5D3 doesn't.I've owned a 1DS3 and apart from the build quality I can't think of a single other reason to pick one up over the 5D3.
The better build quality could swing it if you really need it i suppose.

I think the most common complaint from 5DMK2 owners was the weak AF. This was even more noticeable when Nikon produced a high iso and sharp AF body like the D700. The 1DsMK3 is essentially a 5DMK2 but with 1series features. As a wedding photographer shooting at 6400 has never been a requirement for me, especially since I have fast primes, f2.8 zooms, flashguns and LR3 that can easily add 1-2 stops of exposure to a moderately underexposed shot. I've only ever wanted better AF and perhaps a slighter faster fps. All of which a nice 2nd 1dsmk3 can offer. Build quality isn't essential to me, I've found my 5DMK2's pretty solid.

But the 5D3 beats the 1DS3 in all of the things you have mentioned. If you choose where you buy there's virtually no difference in price for a 2nd hand 1DS3 to a 5D3.
Having used a 1DS3 it really doesn't make any sense any more.

Cheers

Fair point, but I would expect to see the 1dsMKIII around £2200 or less once both the 1DX and 5DMK3 really get into public hands. At a £800 price difference, its enough to push me away from the new 5D for a while.

If the price difference is £800... Unless you really must buy from bricks and mortar UK based shops.

mk3 will be close to 2k by end of the year guaranteed

I think thats being a bit pessimestic on your part.I expect the price to drop like a stone on them.I actually think people will struggle to sell them.
Everything about them feels really old and clunky compared to modern cameras.

I was fortunate enough to run a 1DS3 and 1D4 side by side for a while. The 1DS3 used to drive me nuts.Sluggish, crap screen, forever to wake up from sleeping.I could go on.In it's day it was awesome but 4? years is a very long time in technology.
Wait 6 months and you will pick one up for a song.

Lol, maybe you mean optimistic?

Your opinion is very valuable and thank you for sharing it. I found that to be the case with the 1dsII, but not had any experience with the 1dsIII, i was hoping some of that stuff had been resolved.

Getting mine as soon as stock arrives, can't wait!

Also thought I'd get a MkII for the sake of grabbing a bargain but when I saw the III's spec!

I hope you are right there, I will be the first in the queue to pick up mine. I just happen to dislike small bodies - with or without the grip. 5D3 felt quite awkward in my hands in Focus.

Maybe you prefer bling bling features like a shiny big screen but to me the important ones are the output, nice large and bright viewfinder, reliable AF, and strong sealed body. 1DsII is serving me really well so far - but I am sure you could think of some nasty comments about it as well. The Ds3 is one of the best cameras out there at the moment, and unless you need 12fps, the 1Dx / 5D3 will have very hard time outperforming it for most tasks. The more I look at the 1Ds3vs5D3 files, the more I am convinced that both produce very similar images up to ISO1600 (i.e. both excellent), unless there is some law that we must start using 6400+ for everything.

As the prices are here in Denmark at the moment, I won't buy. Maybe in a couple of months, but the conversion rate for Canon compared to Nikon makes it an even tougher sell IMO - the 5D3 is 40% more expensive than the D800 here!

What do you mean "nasty comments".They are MY personal opinions on having used the 1DS3 a lot.The screen happens to be a very important part of a modern camera.I use it extensivly when focusing my 17mm TS&E.When you spend a lot of time looking at a good screen the older ones look very poor.Just because you don't like "bling bling" features it doesn't mean they are not important to other people. The built in levels on the new cameras make shooting stitched panos etc a whole lot easier and are far more accurate than a bubble level stuck on the top of the camera-especdially one you have lost a mile further back down a hill somewhere!
That's just one example of a bling feature that I find important.

I'm glad the 5D Mk3 came out, because then the 5DMk2 will be cheeeeeeeeeaap!

Mind you, I would like a faster fps camera, so it might be a 7D!

I ordered one from kerso...

I can afford it...
I want it...
Its my hobby...
I will probably use it for a couple of years...

30,000 clicks? = 8.67p per click :-)

A bargain !!!!

I think your all nuts spending £3k on this, but I LOVE this logic, noted and I will use this when I justify my next purchase, many thanks :)

Can you order one with a label on it saying 50d I might get it in under the radar then otherwise I will be admiring it in 2d until the price becomes reasonable

well said I have the money and have a 5dmkII but wanted something a bit better from them.cmameras have jumpt leaps and bounds but they hang to mis market but why.
fair enough the higher iso is good but not a lot else
there was a rumour of them do a 35 mill pix camera what happend to that, maybe come summer it be about
But as some said £3000 how many say sony A77 can you have and it full frame 23 or 24 million pixels
think they loosing there grip on the average joe bloggs

picked mine up here locally and went from an (old) 5d classic and its phenomenal....

AF system is worth it alone. It's quick at focussing and moving af points around with so much more control is so useable. I get excited thinking about it haha!

ISO/noise handling, I'd happily go to 3200 its that useable and clean, I'm over the moon with this function.

Other stuff I love about it is the af points can be set for different positions based on landscape and portrait. It is so user friendly for me when I'm shooting models/people and wide open on a prime when your focusing on the face.

The only niggles for me so far are getting used to zooming in on the screen you press the view button then the zoom button (which is different to the 5d1)

It feels more comfortable to hold too due to the thicker hand grip (to incorporate the dual card slots I guess)

I'm an enthusiast/hobbyist doing some freelance work and I skipped the 5dmk2 due to the af system and very nearly went D800 route, after playing around with some nikons and falling for their af system.

The 5D3 hits all the spots for me just as mentioned above. I think I see it as an investment and will be good for 3-5 years I reckon for my level. If you can afford it get it and enjoy it as I don't think you'll need to upgrade the body for a few years.

Haha 3-5 years, you wait in 3 years time this forum will be full of . . . The Canon 5DXmkIV ticks all the boxes, well worth the £5k asking price. I'm just a cynical old git ;)

Finally decided I'm going to order it. Just the ISO performance and the duell card slots sold me. The ability not to worry about a card failing during a shoot is worth alot to me. I'm contemplating waiting 2-3 months to see if there's a price drop early on. What do you guys think the chances are?

Looking at the price histories of the 7D and the 5Dmk2 on Amazon (via Camelizer), they both displayed drops of at least a couple of hundred pounds in the first few months after launch. I don't personally see why the 5Dmk3 will be any different.

Demand is currently very high and supply very short. Once more suppliers have stock we'll see some downward movement I'm sure.

I'm definitely going to get one, but like you I'm going to wait it out for a wee while and see what happens. I figure that way any early problems will have a chance to be resolved with a firmware uplift and LR4 may have native support for it by then too.

I must be getting patient in my old age...

Good to know that there's a record of them dropping quickly in the past. I just don't know how long I will able to last haha.

I still have two worries that you pointed out.

- if there's a problem with the first couple of batches will it be covered with the warranty?

- with no LR4 support will that mean I can only shoot in jpegs till they have an update?

Cheers

Rupert, on the issue of problems and warranty, there is unlikely to be anything major. However, just as we've seen with nearly every other camera release there are often minor issues which a firmware update will sort out. It's a good sign that there doesn't seem to be any reports of anything yet though.

As far as LR4 support goes, the latest version of ACR lets you convert RAW to DNG which you can then subsequently import into LR4. I doubt it will be very long before LR4 get a point upgrade for formal D800 and 5Dmk3 support though. Adobe are usually on the ball with it.

Cheers Chris. Sounds like 2 fairly minor problems then. :)

When I was using my 5D2 I always longed for the AF of my 7D and when I was using my 7D I always longed for the IQ, ISO and light performance of my 5D2. And so the 5D3 seems to tick all the boxes so I've decided to get one. I found buyers for my 7D and 5D2 to finance it so what the hell. I wanted one, I could afford it and it's about the only hobby that costs me. You're only here once and you're a long time dead, so enjoy it while you can.

Mine's just been dispatched today woohoo. Does that mean I'll get it tomorrow or have to wait till monday, who knows, I will tomorrow though. If I have to wait until monday I can live with that cause I'm going out tomorrow and will have to wait till I get back to have a play. God, I feel like an expectant father walking the waiting room lol.
