I've convinced myself about 95% to buy a 5d3 when they're readily available. I know it's way too expensive for an enthusiastic amateur like myself, I know I'll not make any money from using it, but I've got the "gimmes" . My head says wait until they're out a while and pick up a mk2 at a reduced price, but the low light performance and the way improved focus and fps make it perfect for my occasional rugby photos. I dunno what to do. Any other enthusiast planning on buying one, or is it all pros ?

I'm not, way too much money, 5D2 was the last DSLR I will buy. CSC for me now on. Each to their own though, if you have the money and want it, go get it ;)

I've always thought if you're an amateur, buy what you like if you can afford it - it's basically a toy, so buy the one that you'll enjoy using the most. Probably why every second person on the street over here has a 5DmkII.

If you're making your living from photography, then how much you spend on gear to do your job, and what, if any benefits you'll get from spending it is obviously more important.

May I ask why you are moving to csc ? I went thru a spell of using compacts but I missed the versatility and quality of dslr.

Sure, for me the quality and versatility of m43 means I will more likely take my gear out with me (I have 2 young children too). Yes these small cameras have not got great af tracking or exceptional low light perfomance, but I seldom if ever require this performance. Not for everyone's needs, but for me I'm more likely to get a picture with my m43 gear than with my 5D2 if its sitting at home.

Why? Well, I have been intending to get a full frame body for some time, and the low light performance of the 5D3 really appeals for dawn/dusk wildlife photography. Though I'll be interested to see how I cope with the loss of reach (I'll be keeping my 50d so will have back-up if needed).

In terms of cost, I have been saving a while, have sold a few things and have a very tolerant wife! I also am fortunate to have access to the body at a very good price.

So in conclusion - for my use, overkill - probably. Will I use the body to its full potential - probably not. But I am in the fortunate position where I can afford one, so why the hell not!

Yep, I'm buying one.
Sold my much loved 5D2 on here and waiting for the 5D3 to arrive.
I do like my gadgets to be up to date :D

I'm only a hobbyist (at best :D) and I've been planning on getting this for a long time. Sadly at this price it's been released at, there's just no chance :( I'll have to wait to see what the price is at the end of the year, or when some offers start rolling out.

Still, it allowed me to buy a new guitar instead :p

I do love my gadgets and this is at the top of my list, Although i will wait till the price settles cause its always stupidly high for those who cant wait for new technology.

I'm waiting for the price to stabilise a bit (read drop) but I'll definitely be picking one up at some point. The extra low light capability and AF definitely appeal, as do many of the other features others will find of trivial importance.

I'm certainly a hobbyist (though I've sold a few shots), but I work hard and have few vices so why the hell not!

I never bought a 5D2 because I wanted the AF of the 7D. Never bought the 7D as I wanted to go full frame.

5D3 looks like it may tick the box but I'm undecided whether I can bothered spending that kind of money just now.

That said - when it comes to buying one, I can't see as it matters whether your a pro or an amateur. Like lots of things in life, they're not always needed but If you want it and you can afford it then why not ?

Exactly why I got one...

if you've got the money, buy it. you only live once. buy it, enjoy it.

if i had the money, i'd order it right now, along with a 200f2, 3002.8, etc etc.

sadly i don't have the cash, but i will buy it when the price comes down a tad. i don't expect it to improve my images all that much, just make it a little bit easier to get them.

I might get one but certainly not till Christmass or next Focus. The price isn't right when D800 is much cheaper on preorder - and has better specs (for me). I do want 1Dx though - sadly out of my reach for a while.

no more dirty sensor, better focusing in the darkness, high ISO for northern lights
It has some nice features, but then the question is are they worth £3k. I'll wait.
I'm also having trouble deciding which one of my bodies will go - so I'll take my time.

Still cheaper then a Leica M9 which I doubt many people buy for professional use.

That explains the NSFW :D

Yea I'm buying one too when the price drops a bit. Have 5Dc and 7D now.

Buy one in a heart beat if I had the cash

this^

for a pro tog, u "need" a pro body of some sort. just like u "need" pro tools for the job you are doing(i'd give my boss a slap if he gave me a pentium 1 pc to code and compile java web apps and android apps).

if i had £3k, i'd be grabbing a brand spanking new 5d3 tomorrow from Jacobs/Jessops in my lunch break

What is a very good price ? I've sold my 600D, sigma 10-20mm and I am in the process of selling my Tamron 18-270mm PZD, so I should have around £1100 to go towards either the mk3 or maybe a mk2. I'm undecided as to whether or not sell my 5D mk1, I'm reluctant as I love it, but maybe when I get a new FF it will lose its appeal ?

Hope you all saved a few hundred pounds and bought it from Ian Kerr!

Exactly the same reasons. I'll keep the 50D as a crop/backup but have been thinking of getting a full frame. This just ticks all the right boxes.

Not allowed to say I'm afraid!

The correct answer to the wife is "a lot less than you think my love - it was a bargain".

She uses that when I ask how much her new clothes etc were :D

I ordered one from kerso...

I can afford it...
I want it...
Its my hobby...
I will probably use it for a couple of years...

30,000 clicks? = 8.67p per click :-)

A bargain !!!!

2.5k but that's still 200 more than the D800

LOL well put.

As someone who owns 4 5DM2's, I'm actually not that sold on the 5DMK3. Sure it is definitely an upgrade and probably has killer AF and high ISO. But I'm actually hoping the 1DX and 5D3 will make the 1DsMK3 a steal, which has the solid AF, dual card slot and 5DMK2 like high ISO performance. I'm not disparaging the 5DMK3 or those lucky enough to buy one, I think for some people like me, it's not a convincing leap.

Mine usually says something like, 'oh I found this in Charity shop it was only few pounds' I plan to say the same when I'll buy mk3

Oh 1Ds3 is something I want to get my hands on  They are still around 5DIII RRP money now, so it may also take a while. The Ds2 became cheap only in 2009, good 2+yr after mkIII came out. So I expect a 2 year wait, and it will be a big debate what to go for.
