Hello Folks,
I've currently got a 7D and was limbering up to buy a 5D mk2 (I fancied getting a body with full frame sensor to do landscape stuff) when up pops the mk3. At £3000 ish for the mk3 body I'm finding it hard to justify buying it. Is there that significant a difference between the two? What are your thoughts?

I would try to get mkIII if possible at all. Wait a bit longer for the price drop if necessary.

The differences are mainly AF and fps, and a bit better high ISO. mk2 had rather primitive AF (compared to 7D) and no weather sealing so you may not like that at that price

I have a 5D mk1, I wouldnt upgrade to a Mk2, but I'd jump at a Mk3 if I had the money.
Better weather sealing, better Iso performance, better AF to name but a few things make it a worthwile jump for me.
BUT, would I jump from a 7D to a 5D Mk3, not really sure. The FF loveliness is very desirable but I'd need to be really unhappy with my landscape shots on a 7D to pay £3k to improve them.

Matt

what do you do with your 7D?

I bought a 7D, then a 5D II and now a 5D III....

I only use the 7D now for wildlife when I need the crop......

The AF, metering, handling of the 5D III is fantastic...

The shots are much cleaner, sharper and more detailed than out of the 7D.....

The difference between the 5D original and II isn't that vast if you're just taking pictures - sure its old tech but the images are excellent.

If it were me (and I had loads of money) I'd get the 5DIII in a heartbeat from what I've seen.

My suggestion would be to get an original 5D (should be able to get one for £500 or so) and keep both for a year by which point I would imagine the price will be down to £2500 or less (£2K on import) , then sell both and buy the 5DIII.

Of course these prices are me guessing, but from what I've seen the year seems to be when the price falls to its lowest point while its still in production.

If u shop around u can pic up the 5D mk 3 for £2500

Kerso was doing them for 2600

I bought a 7D because I decided the 5D2 wasn't everything I wanted. Lived with the 7 for 18 months and never felt I was getting great images out of it. Possibly because in the back of my mind I wanted FF.
In the end I knew the 5D3 was going to be mega money so took the plunge and got the 5D2.
I love it and just wished I hadn't waited so long.

Get a 5D mark 1 unless you're printing bigger than A3. Old tech but a lovely camera and there's no real need for the ISO performance of the 5D2 in landscapes, and you'll save yourself halfway to a 16-35 or enough for a 17-40 and a few filters.

5D MKIII if you can afford to, I have the 5D MKII & I love it, but wouldn't mind the 61 AF Points. The MKII is no disappointment but the MKIII is worth the £ you're spending if you want a Full Frame with decent AF. Perhaps hire them out for a day to get a real feel for them?

I've had a MkII and I've now got a MkIII. The MkII is a fantastic camera and can be got at a good price now. However, put it up against a 5DMkIII and the difference is immense. The IQ is very similar, but that's about it. Everything else on the MkIII is a marked improvement and if you can afford it I'd get the MkIII. I got mine from Hdew for £2850 with a 3 year warranty and it's the best camera I've ever owned by far.
