Canon 5D Mk2...i think i got it

I doubt they got a lot. Canon probably supplied the major camera stores first. It was something I considered with Play as they're hardly a major camera store. But its £300 off. Though I may get the camera by the time its £300 off a Jessops :D

The 5D II role out has been a disaster for Canon UK. No real UK stock. This is what I am aware of - JACOB'S had all UK delivery stock pulled by Canon as they lowered the RRP which upset Canon who advised all that the RRP should be enforced at 2299.00 thus making retailers around 18% which historically what Canon apply within the first few weeks of a cameras life. Other retailers, even pro centres got none what so ever despite pre orders.

I suspect UK stock to filter through in Jan 09.

Having played with the camera, I have to say it is lovely.:) Hope people get them sooner rather than later.

Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft all had supply issues with the launch of their latest consoles. Canon have a much smaller demand I think and probably a smaller supply line. Apple also had small numbers for the iPhone 3G. They had about 2 16gb models per store, and maybe 8 of the 8gb model on launch day. Simple fact is no-one can really supply enough of their hardware based product for the world on the same day. It worked well when it went Japan, 3-6 months later America and then 3-6 months later Europe, but we all got annoyed with the year long wait so they went global and now we're annoyed with the lack of supply.

I guess this is the price you pay for wanting their products on or near release dates!

AFAIK the only company who got any significant numbers were Jessops.

Personally I think we'll be lucky to see anything this side of Christmas. Wish I'd seen the Amazon price at £1999 as I get 5% Amex cashback which woud've taken a nice £150 off!

phoned amazon today & they said they were waiting for my payment to be validated???

i asked them if they actually had these cameras in stock & they said yes but 2-4 weeks delivery time....can you smell something?

Yes... a bit like fish.

Amazon.de had them for about £1900 but they don't ship here - I tried :(

i told the woman that i talked to that when i made the order there were 2 cameras available one was with amazon & another with some other shop & i asked her if i had been allocated one of these ...she said i have been & when my payment has been verified one will be dispatched to me by next day delivery.....don't know what to think really

they are now estimating my delivery date as 19th to 29th december....in stock they say but that is my delivery estimate now so will wait & see....still got it at £1,999 though & payment is taken when dispatched

spoke to my local Jacobs store & they have 13 people on the waiting list & have had 3 cameras delivered & dont expect any more till new year

My amazon order still says dec 2 - dec 3 but obviously its not going to happen anytime soon.
Incidentally, if you go back into your order and apply LOWERVAT in the gift code box you will save £42 as the 15% vat rate will be applied.

RGB Tech have this on their website if it helps

Hi ALL

SOME OF YOU MAY BE AWARE THAT CAMERAS ARE NOW SHIPPING.
THE REAL PROBLEM IS, HOW MANY!?
THE ANSWER IS VERY LITTLE. WE ARE NOT EXPECTING ANY MORE THAT 2 OR 3 ON THE FIRST BATCH, AND TO BE HONEST, I PERSONALLY DID NOT EXPECT ANY MORE.
I KNOW IT IS DIFICULT, BUT DUE TO THE HUGE DEMAND FOR US TO SUPPLY THIS PRODUCT, THE EARLIEST WE EXPECT ANY REAL VOLUME OF STOCK IS NEXT YEAR. AND EVEN THEN, IT COULD TAKE CANON A LONG TIME TO CATCH UP WITH DEMAND.

I HOPE YOU UNDERSTAND, WE DO NOT WANT TO LET PEOPLE DOWN OR GIVE FALSE HOPE.

THANK YOU

Yeah, I've got my pre-order with them.

Realistically I don't hold out much hope of getting at that price tbh, not suprised they've been flooded.

They had a very low price on the Nikon D700 back in July (£300 cheaper than anyone else on Day1) and they only got 10 in that day (I was one of the ten).

Don't think lightning will strike twice for me again though!

I missed out on RGBTech. It went from "Register interest" to "Sold out". I wasn't offered the pre-order chance. I'm going to assume that Play are also getting around 2 or so. A long way from what Calumet said last week. 130 pre-orders and they were hoping for 200, just at the Liverpool store afaik.

Do you have any basis for this statement? As it's clearly not in the consumers interests and, in my view, illegal to pull stock on that basis except for clearly defined exceptions (perfume etc).

Slightly off topic, but that kind of English/grammar coming from an MD, posted on an official store website (and in caps no less), is rather odd. Must applaud his honestly of course :¬)

It does look remarkably unprofessional doesn't it?!

going for the 'personal' touch maybe - credit to them I say being straight up about it.

Anyone know whether this camera is any good? It's a whole load of expectation at the moment. None of the magazines I picked up in Tesco today had a review.

Any good? If you don't know why its any good before the reviews are out then its probably not for you. Canon and Nikon don't really make bad cameras. You buy the one with the features you need or want and off you go. I'd suggest you go back to that thread and read it, and then look at whats out and what features you need. Do you need iso25,600? Do you need 1080p video? 3.9fps? Full frame? 21mp? I mean seriously, do you need 21mp? ...EDITED...

There was something on the News a couple of weeks back on how there was going to be a shortage of Nintendo Wii's again this christmas and they've been out for yonks. The reason being is the exchange rate was more favouable for the dollar so a lot of the european allocation was being sent to the US. I wonder if Canon are doing the same thing?

I don't need a magazine to tell me if a camera is good or not.

Seriously, if you rely on magazines in Tesco, you are at the D40 / Canon 400D, Sony A200 end of the market.

I don't mean any dis-respect here.

I picked one up yesterday - last kit in the shop and they were kind enough to break it down to a body only.

Took it out for a spin last night to test the high ISO - some full res pics here. It ain't art, my purpose was to test the ISO performance.

AF seems quicker, better than the 5D, including the outher points. High ISO is pretty incredible IMHO, especially when you consider the files it's chucking out are 18x12 inches @ 300dpi.

Good? It's going to be the best all round camera which Canon have produced, with the exception of the 1DSMK3, but at a fraction of the price. It will produce poster sized images without breaking sweat, and images right out of the camera in excess of stock library minimum file sizes.

Used for wildlife, it will be only just behind the 40D in the cropping stakes, which is actually damned good. I'd best not mention the video capability. :D

I can't honestly say I need one, but for those who do, it's a no brainer. ;)

That should already have been accounted for when theywere deciding how many unitsgo to each region but given the current financial situation it makes sense for them to send the majority of units to the area where they'll get the biggest return in th short term.

Thanks for sharing. Do you have any 100% crops? Hard to see the noise levels at these small scales!

the full res files are there, click the magnifying glass

:o Really? I've heard that no-one is doing that for some crazy reason and that there are more kit er... kits being shipped by Canon.

Thanks, it certainly holds up pretty well up to about ISO3200.

The camera is doing some pretty heavy chroma NR (bit water-coloury for my liking), but it looks pretty good, and should print VERY well.

Yep, it's a small independent and I've got to know them, didn't seem like they were doing me a big favour or anything.

TBH i'm not sure if that was the camera or DPP, which I've not used before thank god. Will know more when I get C1 Pro setup to read the files.

Actually stores can usually make a bit extra by breaking a kit, especially with a desirable lens.

Ah yes thanks, looks good. Nice bokeh, looks like the work of an 84/1.2L :¬)

Which independent shop was it by the way?

Norfolk Camera Centre in Dereham. I used an 85 1.2 and 135 2.0, and a fisheye of course.
