Just been looking at wwwphotoanswers.co.uk, rumours about a new 5D called 7D? Coming in August or November
Any more news out there?
Jim:shrug:

I think Canon have craftily held off waiting for the new full frame "budget" Nikon and once it's launched (which is now) they will start leaking info until we see it later this year. It would also make perfect sense to launch it around Christmas, not so much for stocking fillers (not that that price!) but ready for the new wedding season.

The D700 is an amalgamation of the already released D300 and D3. Would Canon do the same between the 40D/5D and 1D?

I would probably expect a public unveiling at the Photokina Show at the end of September with magazines and trade getting sneak previews to enable publication of details to coincide with this show.

There have been rumours for well over a year now that the 5D replacement(s) will not be called 5D mkII.

There is a lot of talk of there being two full frame models coming, a 3D and a 7D. 7D being more of an improved 5D closer to a 40D and the 3D being a faster/better model, perhaps with inbuilt grip like a lesser 1D.

It's all rumour and speculation as Canon are giving nothing away. I wouldn't expect to hear anything from Canon until Photokina regardless of the rumours that suggest an announcement later this week.

Yeah I agree with that, I reckon Photokina will be a good point to release the new 5D.

Canon suprised everyone with the 1000D so i'm not too sure on this next body. Whatever it is, whatever they decide to call it...i'm gonna get my hands on one!

Also gonna agree with olv, we won't hear anything until Photokina. There's always rumors about announcements and they are always wrong.

shame Canon are so tight lipped because I think that they are going to lose a lot of loyal customers who have been waiting for ages for the 5D to be replaced and have got bored so will jump ship for the D700. A more genuine leak or hint at something concrete would settle a lot of users readying to switch.

Don't forget we get a very distorted view on forums like this one. Most cameras are bought by people that don't care too much who makes it, as long as it fits the budget, the gal/guy in the shop sells it well and the the punter has heard of the name.

Then there are the folks well set into a system who will shudder at the thought of replacing several dozen kilos of glass.

The folks that are left, who could actually swap are a teeny minority and if they do go, canon will not care one bit.

For the record, I'd like to be in that camp as pretty much all the nikons since the D200 have appealed lots to me. :D

I guess so. I'm in the slightly fortunate position that when I upgrade to FF most of my current lenses will be sold anyway so selling an extra one and a flash is not a major issue.

Seriously, why on earth would anyone switch systems to the D700 now? We all KNOW there is a replacement for the 5D due by the Photowhatsitsname show in a few weeks. The sensible money will wait for that then choose.

but then we 'knew' that there was going to be a release 6 months ago or 12 months ago...

I guess i'm making it more dramatic because I have an important wedding in September (my sister's) and my ageing 10D really isn't up to the challenge so I'd like an upgrade :)

I wouldn't bet on any new canon by then.

On the other hand, I'd be happy to take a 10D on a shoot.... but not a 10D without a backup. You may want to start thinking of a plan b sometime around now. ;)

trust me, I have been trying to work out the perfect solution for ages now!

my 10D has done more than enough shutter actuations now to be right on course for shutter failure, probably on the big day.

Luckily i'm not the primary 'tog.

It won't be called 7D, the single digit series of Canon have a very specific meaning in the past

EOS 1 > EOS 3 > EOS 5

So, if they bring out a replacement for the 5D, i think its very unlikely it'll be called a 7D.

that said, look how the 10D, 20D, 30D & 40D evolved so my theory could go out the window.

It's likely that if they release a 7D they will release a 3D aswell to compliment it.

Whatever it's called I'll be keeping my 5D! Ive just bought a 1Ds MkII and if I was being sensible I'd sell the 5D since having two full frame cameras does seem like overkill but I just love the 5D! I can't get the thing out of my hands. I shot a wedding last weekend and what did I take? Yep the 5D with a grip! Doh!

I just love my 5D can you tell? :)

I've only had it for a week, give me a chance to figure out how to work the damn thing!

I'm going to be just shocking with it for a while till I get to know it, it's quite a change from the 5D and until I'm as happy with it as the 5D it can take a back seat. I'm determined to get out with it though!

£200! Yeah and the other £2k! lol

Two 1d's (mk1) for sale today! (not mine though!)

And I know what you mean about hating it and selling it for less but I'm determined to give this thing a go. It's just me, I'm so used to the 5D that I could use it in my sleep, it's so intuitive to me. I like that in a camera because it lets me get on with actually creating the pics I want. The technical process should not come first and it will for a while which is the frustation right now. Grrrr.

One day I'll get what I want out of it and I'll be fine then. And it will be a blooming huge file!

It's funny, I've used the 5D quite a bit and I thought I'd really lust after one for myself, but in fact, I preferred my 40D. Now I have a 1DM2, and I'm in love with it. The bulk and size aren't smashing, but the focussing is outstanding, and I love the tones it produces.

Anyway, Canon now have to respond to the D700, though they couldn't have waited on its release to make any critical decisions, simply because of the amount of time it takes to get these things to market.

I too, wonder, if they'll bring out a 3D, and drop the price on the 5D. This would mean that for the same price point as (or slightly below) the D700, they'll have their new kick-ass FF body, and then they'll be able to attract other people who want a budget FF body, with the 5D at half the price.

For enthusiastic amateurs, and pros alike, the 5D is still a superb camera, and the only area it lacks slightly, is in the autofocus, but it's still more than enough for weddings (it's one of the most popular wedding bodies), family etc.

true - but this chap really does seem to have a real clue.

lol - I don't hold out much hope, but I'm only interested so that used 5D prices drop :p.

I got a 5D for sale at the moment, but cant advertise it as the box for it is in storage, and dont reaelly want to sell it without one. I wont be able to get it until 2 weeks tim,e when if the rumours are tru the new one will be out and the price of my 5D will have gone down.

I for one are hoping nothing is announced, but surely we woudl have heard more from "sources" what with all the rumours flying round and the interest being huge.

I'll sell you a 5D box for cash now and a replacement box in two weeks time. :naughty:

ah - lucky I wasn't rude then :).

I read the were going to call the new one the 3D, now that would be cool.

"I've just bought a 3D camera" that would impress my mates

:)
