Canon 5D mk II official owners/users thread, anything related to the 5D2

Thanks. I'm definitely interested to give a try.
As you are based in London, would I be able to collect it if agreed suitable place & time?

Must be in the wrong section ... I was sure I was looking for the 5dmk2 thread.

It would be if it were in the classifieds section. :rules:

Someone is sensitive today :police: I'm sorry if my unintentional rules breaking question ruined the thread of 5DMK2; I can edit as a fix but would break rules again?? (sarcasm). High5  :)

ll other (Global) forum rules still apply.
No buying, selling or trading outside of the classifieds forums : This includes other forum sections, the PM system, signatures and more.

What's your opinion on focusing screens? I'm thinking upgrading to EF-S or EF-D. S version would be ideal as I have few f1.4 lenses, but D would make more aware of lines and composition.

Galaxy66, do you use standard screen or something else?

Typically on a single OEM battery I get between 1200 shots (e.g. at a festival) and 400 shots (extensive Live View and long exposures) - typically about 800 shots.
Hence I rarely change a battery while I'm out for the weekend.

How many shots are you getting with your 3rd party batteries and what is their quoted capacity ?

You may find that battery life increases considerably after a number of charge cycles. Mine certainly did.:)

Same here. I have 2 batteries in the grip at all times and it took about 3 charges before they started to perform as they should. From past experience though, all Lithium batteries need a few charges before they perform at their best.

After some time of use I think there is a problem with batteries. I read all over forum where people can push 1k photos on one charge. I can't do that even with my best intentions. 200 shots and it's dead. Yesterday was even worse, with tethering originally battery lasted only 90 shots and had to rush finalise catalog shooting. It's just weird.

Update: looked at the charger and it gets quite hot while charging. Hahnell battery got charger from 0 to 73% in 20 minutes??? After one switch on camera to see Battery info, procentage droped to 69%??? Crazy :D

That's not right...
Can you borrow another battery to test?

What screen protectors do you guys use?

I am looking at my lovely pristine screens and dreading the day i scratch them so , before they do, I'd like to apply a protector.

Any recommendations and links would be great - thanks :)

My much used and abused early model 5DII had no screen protector.
I killed it last November and the screen was still unmarked.
It's replacement was already fitted with a Giottos screen protector, I wouldn't have fitted one by choice. It hasn't been scratched yet either, but I've only had it a few months.
I'm not sure if the Giottos screen protector can be removed; it seems glued onto the Cannon screen.

Duncan

why wouldn't you fit one by choice as you say? Does it detract from the viewing quality or is it something else?

I just use the Jessops cheapo protectors. £5.95 (I think) for five which you cut to size. They won't protect from a heavy knock, but they do guard against scratches.

It may or may not be logical - but......

1) When the 5DII was released Canon made a big song and dance about the screen coating. By fitting a protector you lose any advantage that coating provides. I don't think the Giottos screen is any less legible, but I haven't yet had the chance to do a side by side comparison with an unmodified 5DII.

2) I've never scratched a screen.
The Canon screen can always be replaced if I do scratch it.

3) They cost money (I'm Scottish)

I use a Giottos AEGIS protector and bought it from Amazon for £19.85 delivered. Seems to unaffect the screen clarity and provides peace of mind against any damage

None.

I've had my 7D and 5D2 for over two years and my 1D3 for over three and the "screens" on all of them are unmarked (other than grease). Apart from which the "screens" are protectors and can be replaced. The real screen is beneath the cover you get to touch.

Tim, I like this answer as I didn't know you could replace the screen so easily.
I'm going to keep it without as a result.

Thanks

There is also a video out there somewhere showing how easily it is done, I may have the link on my old lappy.

Hi chaps, I'm pretty sure this is a really dumb question as I've not found anything when searching, I have an integrated sd card reader in my Mac, is there an adapter that goes into the SD card reader that will accept a cf card ? Roger

You are better off with Lexar USB3.0 card reader @Amazon ;) I'm not aware of any such adapters from SD to CF.

Thanks for that I'll check it out ... Roger

Yes I know I'm two years behind everyone else, but can I join the party?
Picked up a mk2 at Focus on Sunday, and I'm most impressed with it so far. I'd love to keep my mk1 as well, but I think its going to have to go in the classifieds to appease SWMBO. Boo hiss!

Hoping for my new 5dII soon so thought I'd get a card (or two) - anyone recommend one - fast and safe ? - I always have thought that maybe be better to have several smallish cards than one big one, OK you have the faff of changing them 'on location' but if a disaster were to happen (I dropped an SD card in a puddle once) you haven't lost everything.

Any thoughts please ? Roger

Roger - depends on what you shoot :)
I use 16Gb cards.
I find a long intensive day out shooting landscapes only fills half a card.
But shooting festivals is usually about one and a half cards per day.

Oh and anything else I MUST have for the new camera, eg LCD screen protector, what about 'body armour' ... what bits have you fitted (or maybe what bits do you now wish you had fitted when the thing was new) ? Roger

Thanks Duncan, any particular manufacturer ? and yes Andy - I have a similar strap that I'll keep when I pass over my 550D, don't know what I'd do without it ... has a small pouch for a spare card/battery ... really useful.

I use the 90mbs Sandisk 16gb cards, got a couple of 60mbs 8 and 4 gb cards too.

+1 for Sandisk. 8G card here... I shoot RAW and it can take a few good sessions to fill one up (I'm landscape/city scape and single shot).

LOL - why are you called Digital Failure ?

I use SanDisk Extreme - never had one fail on me.
I've had cheaper cards fail, which is why I started getting decent Sandisk.
16Gb is a good compromise between cost and capacity.
Make sure you buy from a reputable dealer; there are a lot of fake cards around.

You will need a spare battery. Mostly for peace of mind, but it is possible to flatten a fully charged battery when using Live View intensively.

Never bothered with a screen protector or other protection and my early 5DII was unmarked when I killed it last Nov. It led a hard life until my tripod blew over in a storm landing in a lake; Canon pronounced it beyond economic repair. No amount of additional protection would have helped, though I now tend to spread the tripod legs further than the default amount.

There's no way I'd buy a 5d2 right this minute, the price is sure to drop. I'd wait a week or more and see what happens ;)

Au contraire. Given that production is to continue alongside the mkIII for a while at least, i'd say prices should remain reasonably bouyant.

Price has dropped by $300 in the US, no harm in waiting in my view
