Canon 5D Mark II settings ?

Im quite new to Canon DSLR cameras and i've recently bought myself a 5D Mark II (had a Nikon D90 previous) is there any recommended settings that i should be selecting to get the best out of my camera such as its high iso preformance ? :thinking:

I did search but found that i just got told the words where too short in my search :(
 
I dont really need high iso all the time but obviously prefer to have it running as good as possible for times when i do and now with it being winter and darker earlier or cloudy the high iso would help for bit of faster shutter speed :shrug:
I tend to shoot mostly landscape stuff or my own family really, Sometimes on other cameras ive seen suggestions of certain settings not just for iso benefits so just thought may be same thing for the 5D :thinking:

The course you linked does sound about right for me, but right atm being a quite new owner id prefer to put that amount of cash towards glass really or even a good book that might be of some help :)
 
Yeah i'd recommend some books! There isn't one good setting on the 5D hence they are changeable. If you like landscapes invest in a tripod and use low ISO's

Couple of new books on amazon coming out over the next few weeks may help also look up "Magic Lantern", also what Lens do you use ??

The 5D is a great tool, with the right lens, the right subjects, with the right light and the right hands. :-)
 
With ISO it's a balancing act. You want to keep the ISO as low as you can to keep the maximum quality.

I choose the aperture I want depending on subject and then balance the ISO with the shutter speed. Again it depends on the subject. A couple at a church altar I can shoot just about down to 1/60 minimum so I'll move the ISO around until I can get 1/100-1/125 (if I can get it!)

For landscapes a tripod really IS your friend. f11-f22 and the exposure takes as long as it takes :)

It's all very subject dependant so I can't really recommend any settings but if you can get a book on the fundamentals of exposure it should help a lot.
 
Ok thanks for all the advice i thought it was worthwhile asking just incase there was something that everyone always tends to have turned off or on with the settings :lol: I will keep a look out for new books appearing though :thumbs:

Im very limited on my lenses atm being new to Canon i have the 50mm f1.8 which is ok for a starter portrait lens and a 70-200 F4L non IS i did plan on getting the 17-40 as my 1st L lens but i got the 70-200 F4 offered for £300 so jumped at buying that as it was cheap imo, Im going to look at getting the 17-40 though is my planned next purchase :)
 
BIGREYHORSE I have done this all day course at Park Cameras on the 5DMK2 and it is absolutely fabulous. Most people only use an eighth of what the camera does. They give you loads of fantastic tips and how to set it all up correctly and the chance to experiment with Canon professionals plus a disc to take home.

Yes I know someone that's done it and had a very good day, also liked the free DVD.
