I would like opinions on the Canon 5D mark II vs Canon 7D. Any help opinions welcome!

Depends what you shoot, both are excellent cameras. Generally speaking the 5D2 is a bit slower geared towards image quality, the 7D faster geared towards fast action, sport and wildlife. Both bodies can be used as 'do-it-alls' to great effect.

5D2 has significantly better IQ than the 7D but lacks the advanced focus of the 7D although the centre point of the 5D is probably better than the centre point of the 7D

1D mkIII is a good all rounder IMO.

Pointless post if you don't tell us what you shoot, different cameras for different things.

Are there any sample images which compare the IQ of the two cameras? The only ones I have found were on Ken Rockwell's site.

I'm in the lucky position where I have both and use both depending on what I'm shooting. At the moment I'm using the 5D2 about 90% of the time with wildlife, portraits and general walkabout shots. However, come summer and I'm shooting sports and airshows the 7D will be my go to camera then. The 7D can shoot everything the 5D2 can, but the 5D2 cannot shoot everything the 7D shoots. Having said that, I prefer the IQ of the 5D2 and once you get used to the 5D2's AF system you can shoot just about anything and everything.

Thanks for the link to that site Andy, just what I was after. Call me a pleb, but I think the 7D holds up pretty well based on those shots. Am I missing something?

Sorry but I've never heard good things about the 7D's images, you can't really even compare a 1.6 crop sensor to a 21mp Full frame sensor (in my view).

I think the images from the 7D are excellent especially considering the mp count on a crop sensor. Not seen the noise that some complain of although 1600 is my limit and usually much lower than that

Great allround camera and will take something to better it

You have now

I went from a 40D straight to a 1D mkIII as there seemed to be nothing inbetween, I read up on the 7D and it should fit this bill, but nobody thought the images were a big enough imporvement on the 40/50D (another can of worms there regarding 40D vs 50D IQ) - obviously it has the merits of the amazing AF system.

Of course could all be user error/mico-adjust, just generally I was not hearing enough good things about the 7D as a camera, I'm sure it's fine, just not one of the better Canon models perhaps.

My point is that surely you'd actually research and study image samples, of which there are no doubt thousands upon thousands, or shoot some test shots at a retailers before coming to that conclusion rather than through reading other peoples opinions.

Never needed to micro adjust (thankfully) and can say having had two 40D's that the 7d is better in every department

Must disagree and would say in my opinion its probably the best crop sensor camera that Canon have ever produced, a true allrounder

Well, there's a link to a website in this thread which does compare them, and the two cameras look pretty close to me. Either there are attributes of the 5D which aren't apparent in the test, or i'm missing something?

Grum...you got pretty decent results w/7D...just tell me what camera to buy:)

I'd agree with the above was looking at some piccies last night from my 40d same operator and same glass and the photos from my 7 are a lot better even though I've only had it a couple of months so am still getting to grips with it.

To the op I had this same discussion with myself at Xmas do I buy a 7d or a second hand 5Dii in the end I went for the 7 because I enjoy photographing my dogs in action, the af and high fps were more suited to my subject matter

7d 'seems' just a 50D with the decent AF system (and fast FPS). It is no doubt the best 1.6 crop camera Canon have ever made, but it's also probably not as good as it should have been, just going from oppinon that it's not the sharpest cookie in the jar, jack of all trades, master of none perhaps.

Yes not my own experiences, but it's not practical for me to test 5 cameras at once, side by side etc so of course I went on 'the general consensus' from users on here. Of course 7D owners will defend their camera, I'm not trying to cause a stir - I'm just making the OP aware of the 7D's reputation in some corners.

Trouble with the internet is you mainly hear the negative side, sure every camera can be found fault with and here we go http://www.google.co.uk/#hl=en&output=search&sclient=psy-ab&q=canon+5d+mkii+problems&psj=1&oq=&aq=&aqi=&aql=&gs_sm=&gs_upl=&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.,cf.osb&fp=f14f288213313b0b&biw=1280&bih=666

Realise you are trying to make the OP aware and that's exactly what he asked for, but having had the opportunity to use other Canon crop sensor cameras I feel my observations are also relevant to this post. Cannot compare it to the 5D MKII and wouldn't therefore say which is better, also not trying to defend the 7D because I own it and if it was poor would say so.

I think its an excellent camera and produces consistently good results. never felt the need to upgrade to the 50D from the 40D, but glad I did this time

I don't own a 7D, I did own a 1D3 and they had an infamous AF fault which Canon recalled...

1d mKIII had 4 possible issues I believe, 2 of them fairly major.

Anyway, others have summed it up, 7D great AF, 5d mkII amazing IQ/ISO.

I own both the 5DMKII and the 7D...

If you want a 'Jack-of-all-trades' camera, go for the 7D. If absolute image quality is your thing, go for the 5DMKII.

They're both great cameras and to be honest, I'd hate to have to choose between them if I could only keep one although I'd have to say that the 7D is probably the more versatile of the two. :)
