That's what I've just been told in Jacobs ! :gag:

Went in to try a D90 with grip ( tried Jessops last week and they didn't have a MB-D80 in store - these are supposed to be specialist camera shops !)

Just happened to mention that I had toyed with the idea of changing to a used Canon 5d and that's what he came out with. I said that there is an awful lot of people would disagree mate ! Yes, it's an older model but it still produces the goods as many have told me.

Don't know if it's just a pitch to get you to buy newer and what's in-store :nono:.

Needless to say I bought nowt !!

Commission signs rolling in his eyeballs most likely, I'm sure Canon would have something to say to the retailer if the knew they were being rubbished by them.

I now officially love Jacob's...

Their man sounds like he know's what's what...

burn down the place ! . I'm actually shocked how illiterate most of them are. they only sharpen their sales skills. I love when I see a real old tog working in a shop (usually not in big chains) , you can always talk so much with them and they won't be pushy in sales.

You should have heard what he said about the pro Nikon range, I've never heard language like it

If you mention, whilst looking at new cars in a Ford dealer, that you are considering a second-hand Vauxhall then you'll get a similar answer.

The salesbloke is obviously not going to encourage you to buy anything second hand rather than something new from him - irrespective of whether were talking cameras, cars or widgets.

I had something similar a while back in PC World, when buying a laptop I was told "Don't buy a Toshiba, I had one four years ago and it was rubbish" :o

People who respond like that are nothing but box shifters I'm afraid! Either that or they simply have no idea what they are talking about! Luckily anyone on here is probably savvy enough to do their research first ;)

BTW, I have a Canon 5D and love it. My grandfather has a Nikon D90 and loves it. Horses for courses ;)

Everyone knows Nikon is better.... (JOKE)

I've heard many horror stories in whilst standing in Jessops, the majority of staff do not have a clue about the camera's they are selling :(

Is a Ford dealer likely to be impartial ??? I don't think so. They want to sell you a Ford.

Jacobs staff should give sensible advice regardless of brand or age don't you think ?

OK, not the best example. But Jacobs staff are NOT there to provide advice - they are there to make sales. You were seeking comparison between a new item which they sell and a second-hand alternative. His commission will override other considerations.

Tell him you've been offered a two month old 'blad for sixpence. He'll still try to sell you the new camera.

I had the same sort of thing happen at CameraWorld, Chelmsford. I decided to upgrade from the Sony HX1 to a NIKON D5000. I went to CW and did the deal and I just happened to say that it was a toss up between the D5000 or the Canon 550D, well I used the 'C' word he went purple and almost choked. He told me "NO WAY, stick with your Nikon", even though the Canon was more expensive.

But CameraWorld have been brilliant and the service is second to none, so I will stick with them even though there is a Jessops (:shake:) about 2 miles from me.

After I joined TP I saw some posts where Canon 550D owners were getting 99 error messages and a few other problems. I know mine can go wrong, but was I glad I chose Nikon (I did have Nikon's in the 70's & 80's).

do you honestly think that the sales person in jessops is going to respond with "thats a great idea" when you suggest getting a second hand body from someone else compared to the spanky new body hes trying to sell. not a chance.

granted the jacobs chap should be impartial if you were toying between buying a 5D mk2 or a D700 (for example) from him, but hes a sales person so hes not exactly going to recommend you buy from someone else.

But we are talking salesman here, and most of them talk crap.

Except that often companies can vary commission between brands to move stock etc... so if he's getting £80 for the D700 and a standard £50 for the Canon I'd expect him to push the D700.

That's why you should always do your research then go to the shop to try/buy.

John, Jacobs sell second hand kit too ( Newcastle branch do anyway ) so it's in his interests for me to make ANY purchase. I just thought it was a comment made out of ignorance really. If it were me I would offer my best advice rather than make an off-hand comment and worry about my £1.27 commission, then have someone like me come home and start a new thread criticizing the store :lol::lol::lol:

even if you were on minimum wage? as gingerweasel said, do your research before going into the shop, i dont trust sales people so i try to ensure i go into store knowing EXACTLY what i want, rather than letting them tell me what i want.

Whitewash , research regarding what ? I assume you mean cameras.

I had, I went in looking to try a D90 with grip. I just made a comment about the 5d and he said it was "rubbish" that's all.

Yes, the 5D is SO rubbish. Nobody uses that hunk of junk anymore... :suspect:

On a slightly more serious note, very few sales people are actually interested in what they're selling. They're more interested in the sale (shocker, ain't it?) of what they've been told they need to shift or what they'll make the most commission on. For a sales person to flat out say "The 5D is rubbish" has obviously either never used one, is a complete ********ter or a total elitist...or all three.

Well hes correct in saying but wrong in not explaining the reasons why.

Although you did go in for a D90 battery grip so he's focused on selling that to you, maybe knowing he hasn't got a 5d to sell and would you really change all your gear?

Well, Jacobs are also more expensive than the internet, and I've had some pretty good advice from Warehouseexpress etc, so why would you buy in person at all if they don't give advice?!?

It all boils down to impulse power, I bought my 5DII from jessops on an impulse, went in bought it job done lol could of waited a few days and saved maybe £100 but meh shops have stuff in stock for you to take away.

Was in Jessops Derby today, and a chap was asking about a 5D MKII, the Salesman advised him, that they did not have them in stock as people were unhappy with the quality and he would be much better off with a 7D as they had them available, and he would be able to use EF-S lenses which produced results as good as the "Much More Expensive EF Lenses he would need for the 5D!"

Luckily 20 Mins later saw the same guy buying a nice new 5D MKII in LCE

Now if the salesman had been honest and explained it was not in stock but they could order it in I bet they would have got the £2400 sale that went down the road!

Jessops are on top form all the time :) lol, they tried to give me an SD card for my 5DMKII and insisted it was SD right up until he got the box from the stores.

Haha, he sounds like one of those people who think that their current camera turns into a brick once the next model comes out. Once the 5D mkII was announced, he reached in to his camera bag for his 5D, only to find that it was now made of cheese...
