similar has happened with one of my flashes the reason was it wasn't fully seated on the hot shoe ( not full pushed in to the hot shoe )
the thoughts of what was happening is the pins wern't quite mated up properly but with the centre pin being larger than the others that one was making proper contact and would fire the flash at full tilt as if it was a manual only flash
might be worth a check to see if you have the same problem
the other thing that comes to mind is a dirty contact stopping ETTL communicating with the flash properly
switch cleaner and a cotton bud would cure that
