Hi, I'm new here so you may be seeing a few questions from me :geek:

I've used many DSLR's but now I'm looking for my first to own!
I have the list narrowed down to the 2 entitled (unless you can convince me otherwise; i'll be using it for 'general use', macro & astrophotography).

I've briefly read the specs of both of these and apart from the build quality, higher fps and fancy LCD screen, i can't see where the extra £200+ is coming from!

Any advice would be hugely appreciated, and feel free to tell me if i'm being stupid by completely missing something :bonk:

Cheers!

I think the 60d has a faster shutter speed available, which I believe is 1/8000 and also a higher ISO capability.

Thats all I know there is different other than the things you have already mentioned.

The 550D and 60D have the same high ISO capability and indeed sensor.

What you get is the higher shutter speed, faster fps, larger buffer (550D can only handle 6 RAW files at a time, the 60D is 16), larger and brighter viewfinder, larger body with bigger grip, horizon level, in camera styles processing, top camera LCD, larger rear LCD that pops out, more advanced AF system (same as 50D), more powerful battery (twice the capacity of the 550D - same as the 5D II and 7D) and the extra dial on the back for scrolling through images etc.

Quite an upgrade if you ask me :)

Digital Rev has the 60D body only for £609.99 on ebay ;) I've just bought one myself :)

Now that is just far too tempting, given the standard selling price of the 550d.
I think it's safe to say that you may have just settled this for me :)

There's an article on photographing the moon in the latest edition of Digital Photo magazine that you may find interesting.

When buying from Digital Rev are you liable to any import duty, taxes etc?

If you buy from the website, no. Any expenses you just claim back. When buying from their ebay shop, be a bit more careful. Where the auctions are listed as NO VAT or NO TAX, you are fine. Where they are not, you are liable (the prices are lower to reflect this).

Thanks for the reply. I had always been put off buying from Digital Rev buy I may consider in the future as some of their prices are very good.

OH - sorry for hijacking your thread and taking it off topic :bonk:

In fairness tho you can get the 550d with 18-55mm IS lens for 520
this is the same kit that i bought about a month ago. =]

That is very good actually, but I already have access to 50mm 1.8, 75-300mm & 60mm macro and soon to be investing in an UWA lens ... so I won't really want the standard 18-55mm. Just looking for a body (and willing to fork out a bit more on it since lens' are not a problem!)
Plus, I think the rotating screen on the 60d will come in handy for the awkward angles when doing some astro shots :)

& don't worry Dean, it took me a while to figure out the workings of Digitalrev!

Cheers for the article!
Obviously the clear winner is the 7D, but as an amateur I don't think I could justify spending around £1000 just yet.

I'm pretty sure I'll go for the 60D, popped into Jacobs to have a look and I really like the size and weight of it.

I've been lurking on the DigitalRev ebay page for days now, I think I'll plunge in and buy the 60D from you soon enough :whistling:

Besides all the prices discussed, I think this article would help you in choosing upon 550D or 60D.

Sure thing! If you can let me know after you placed the order, it would be appreciated and I can keep track on things.

Thank you!

Finally got out to do some shooting with the 60D :) Weather and light was terrible, but luckily the camera does a great job at higher ISOs :)

This was at ISO2500:

Surely sample shots from the cameras will be pretty much the same, given they all have the same sensor? Yes there will be the exception of sports with the 7D's AF, but for the most part IQ won't be a factor deciding between them, surely?

You'd think. But then some are saying the 60d has resolved the banding issue some 7d owners have experienced. So who knows!

The banding thing was done a while ago.... funny how something like that hangs around regardless of no reports of people seeing it for quite some time..

Digital rev reviewed the 550d the 60d and the 7d and said IQ was pretty identical..

There are other differences of course....

  • Viewfinder information (funky 7d transmissive LED)
  • AF
  • FPS
  • wireless flash (60d and 7d have different features)
  • viewfinder etc..
  • construction
  • memory type

Check out Digitalrevcomparison

All good cameras though anyway....

Will do! I'll likely be placing an order at some point next week. Want to make sure I don't get it until my exams are over. The last thing I need is a brand new toy to take my attention!

Cheers for the sample, looks brilliant even at that sensitivity!
Although from looking at the caption, you've got some nice expensive glass in there to help with the quality ;)

I am definitely going for the 60D. Just need to decide on what lens(es) to get to start me off.

Again, cheers for the input everyone!

FWIW, I took delivery a few weeks ago of a 60D; originally I wanted something lightweight to backup my 1D3.

I also have a 5d.

Anyway, I have to say that I'm impressed with the 60D on every level; compact body, excellent sensor, ok high iso, reasonable AF etc...

The point of this mail is really to reassure the OP that you really cannot go wrong with the 60D. There may be a few better specced and specialist cams out there but the 60D is a cracking all-rounder especially for the prices quoted in this thread.

Enjoy !
