Canon 550d or 6d for airshow

Hi all.

Have just upgraded to a 6d from a 550 and was wondering about which to take to the Fairford airshow in July. Would the 6d fare better if I crop in on the images to 'get closer' to the aircraft (regarding noise and iq)...or would the crop sensor of the 550d be a better bet?, as obviously 300mm on full frame is 300mm, but on crop, it's more like 480mm

Any opinions anybody??
 
You've spent a lot of money on a nice new camera. Take it and use it. The af will be far superior too.
 
Take both and swap according to what you're shooting? Without doubt the 6D will give better image quality but the 550D's still a perfectly good camera and the crop factor can really work for you if you're shooting fast jets displaying. :)
 
The larger viewfinder in 6D will allow easier tracking.

Remember 300mm is 300mm everywhere, crop just crops the edges off. with 6D you can see the edges in the view finder and you have the option to crop in post anyway.

You can crop in post, and assuming you don't need a huge edit you can crop a long way with a sensor like the 6D's but you're eating into resolution. It's not the same principle as getting closer with a crop sensor.

Yes, this was what I was wondering about. I shall take both, and use my 70-300 Tamron on the 6D and the 55-250 Canon on the 550d. Sounds like I'll be best off with the 550d's crop sensor for the 'far away' stuff and the 6d for everything else???
 
I'll be taking at least 2 bodies when I go to the Waddington airshow. I'll use my Sigma 150-500 OS on my 5D3, maybe use the wifes 120-400 OS on my 1D MkIII and then have a selection of lenses on my for the ground display with my 7D.

If you take both and don't use one you're covered, if you take just one and need the other you're stuffed. You can always swap lenses around if you find you need more 'reach' than you'll get with the 6D.
 
Take both. The 550d has a 1.6x sensor so when using a 300mm, so you're effectively shooting at 480mm. Aircraft can seem quite distant at RIAT if you're on the spectator line so using the 300mm on the 6d will put you further back. Like others have said, take both and switch depending on what is displaying.
 
Thanks for your input folks. I will indeed take both. Am thinking of hiring a 100-400L for the 6D too now.
