Please can anyone advise a newbie who has just purchased their first DSLR on a lens with more reach. I think I'm going to be intrested in Landscapes and Street Photography but until I know for sure I don't really want to spend huge amounts. Plase can anyone advise on a specific lens or any good retailers.

Look forward to hearing your thoughts.

Hey my 1st post. Happy TP days:D

Hello Nicola & welcome to TP ! :)

If you are looking second hand up in the top right hand corner is MBP just picked up a lens, grip for my 550d from them second hand & was very impressed with the service & condition. Street & landscapes aren't my thing so can't help with suggestions but I am sure there will be lots of people by soon with suggestions

do you really mean more reach, as in telephoto?
Most landscape is shot with wide angle, 17/18-24mm give or take.

Ah thanks for your all you help. Looking forward to researching and finding what's best for me. So anymore suggestions welcomed.

Hi Nicky

Tricky as you are really looking at two lenses.... Street photography could be almost anything I suppose from 50mm to 200mm depending on how brave you are! Takes some courage to take a close up pic of a stranger with a 50m lens. My personal favourite for street would be a either a 24-70 or a 70-200 with the latter the better. You can get good candid shots without the subject being aware most of the time.

Landscape as a previous poster says is normally a wider angle lens 17-40 typically but I know zilch about hills and things!

Don't forget to look at the s/h market, lots of good lenses.

Cheers

As a newbie, welcome by the way, you could do worse than use the 2 kit lenses for the 550D. The 18-55 IS and the 55-250 IS are really good lenses for their price. They give a good field of reach and the 55-250 is great all the way through.
The problem with going for a do it all superzoom, as I found out to my expense, is they do tend to be a bit soft at both ends. I got a Tamron 28-300 VC and it was great between about 45 to 265, after that it was a bit of a disapointment.
Oh, and it it was me I'd not bother putting UV filters on everything. I made that mistake as well, spent around £200 on good quality UV filters but was much happier with IQ when I took them off and put the lens hood on.

And....you can always borrow mine to have a play with... I don't have a real wide angle tho!

I think the 55 250 is a good suggestion , not an expert on canon lenses and saw some luke warm reviews on the web , but i think they were for the earlier non is ones ?

I assume its worthing saving a few pennies extra for the IS model ??

I'm another to recommend the 55-200mm IS lens. Good zoom lens to start with. Keep an eye on camerapricebuster to see where you can get it the cheapest.

There's no such thing as a non IS 55-250, they all have IS. It's a great little lens and puts lenses 5 times the price to shame.

I'd go for the 55-250, nice lens (not that I have much to judge it against) and can be had for about £140ish on amazon.

Hi
Thanks for all of your advice. I've decided to go for the Canon 55-250 ISII. I purchased it from Amazon for £147.99
I've read some good reviews and I think for this price it will be a good starter.
Look forward to posting some shots and getting feedback.

I'm sure you'll be very happy with your 55-250, it's a great lens for the money

The 55-250 is a good lens, but if you get tired of swapping/carrying two lenses, the 18-135 would be my choice. It costs a little bit more than the 55-250, and the picture quality is about the same. I have both and the 18-135 is what's on my camera 90% of the time.

Ive the same camera and would recommend getting the ef 50mm F1.8 aswell there about £80. The quality of the images it can produce is excellent considering the price of this lens... you can be really creative with it too. Just search groups on flickr using this lens and see for youself.

It punches way above its weight with regards to IQ againts price tag.... Its good lens to have in your kit IMO :)
