Canon 550D is here 18MP & HD video

Sounds good if its true, would knock the 500D sales downs a lot. Cant get on the link at the moment, I have a rubbish conection on my dongle, ill have to wait till I get home. So far so good from what you have said.

The more I look at it the better it seems ON PAPER

Love to know what kind of noise will be going on with 18MP, it's not the same sensor as the 7D apparently............

Oh god I want to trade in my 450D now!

This sounds like my next camera! Full control of movie mode along with selectable frame rates AND the 7D metering system. Oh it also has a microphone input! For me this is perfect. I will be surprised if Canon release a 60D now, there isn't must room between the 550D and the 7D IMO.

Will just add to my dilemma on what next - have been thinking about an upgrade for a while now, 7D or a s/h 5D. Keen on the build quality and features of the 7D, but comments about focussing and noise are putting me off.

Yeah I'm still hoping for a 60D with top mounted lcd, lens micro adjustment & better noise handling & ISO range than my 450D

BTW US retail is $799.99 for the body only

So expect to pay £799.99 here!

Thats the RRP, I'm pretty sure it will fall to around £600 a couple of months after release, not far off what the 500D costs now.

All this in a 50D type body and FPS would be fantastic, surely the 60D will still be here this year?

ISO 6400 looks very, very good. Think the noise reduction is now much more heavy handed -on the jpeg samples at least.

Looks good, still happy with my 450D though for now.

I think I'll keep my powder dry for a 60D as and when it appears, although lenses are more on my wish list for now.

I'm with Mad Badger on this 18MP on a sensor this size is likely to be very noisy and lets face it who in the market that this camera is aimed at needs that large a file size

The thing is what could the 60D have that the 550D doesn't and yet still not tread on the toes of the 7D. I can't see a logical upgrade for the 50D now.

Interestingly, LCD resolution is up to 1,040,000 pixels. A good sign for other future releases.

I agree Artyman - am disappointed no 60D announcement, however I reckon there's still a space in the market for a XXD between the 550D & 7D, esp if they took the video OFF for the 60D.

Not sure why you'd spend many hundreds of pounds for a mediocre/duff video camera that can take good still pics, I want an excellent stills camera that can't take video

Definition of consumer:

"An individual who buys products for personal use and not for manufacture or resale....and someone who can be influenced by marketing and advertising."

Definition of EOS 550D and those that follow:

"Overkill."

When will this madness stop. Consumers don't need 18mp. They don't need 10. More fuel for the fire and less time spent developing new, more efficient, better quality ways of capturing digital imagery. Its another step, nothing revolutionary.

Really HD movies and 18MP? now where are my games?

:bang::cuckoo: I am disappointed with this one, and no 60D. I am no videographer, and I can't find the appeal for the other functions of this camera. It is too small and slow, and difficult to use. 18MP is perhaps OK with L lenses so it could make an OK landscape camera, used on tripod and ISO 100. It looks very soft on dpreview samples (I suppose taken with the kit lens).

The only place I can see that a 60D could go would be 1.3 crop like a cut down 1D3 or 4 less focus points etc else it is going to be too close to the 7D

so its time for me to start fattening the piggy bank for a 7D

Go for it... You won't regret it! I'm having a lot of fun with my 7D after a bit of a wobbly start! :)

The 550D looks good on paper and it looks like it's an awful lot of camera for the money although I can't for the life of me think why a couple of its features are on there and not on the 7D... The user-selectable Auto ISO limiter would have been handy! :)

Do you mean 550D can shoot in ISO priority mode by locking out the aperture and the speed, or is it just an adjustable max ISO for the automated modes? Personally I couldn't care less about the latter.

Jesus some of those sample pictures look awful.

I'm glad I looked at them, I don't feel so bad about my own shots now.:)

Surely that could be resolved with a firmware upgrade to add that into the 7D's software?

"Auto ISO limiter would have been handy"

Yup. I've been using this on my GF1. It is handy.

Preorders are now available at Jessops and Warehouse Express.

Prices will almost certainly drop so maybe it'd be best to hang on a bit before buying.

I agree. Unless Canon announce a 60D in the next couple of months I'll probably pick up a 550D when the price reaches around the £600 mark.

Release date is the 28th of February according to Amazon.co.uk

I do not see Canon's logic and strategy here. In my personal opinion, they rush the cameras and they just bring them out one after the other too quickly. The 50D seems 'old junk' now!! What about the 7D, the 550D, the 500D and even the 450D??? They are just all coming in and out too quickly.

I'll stick with my 40D for the moment I think. As a few other people have said, I think squeezing 18MP onto a consumer level crop sensor is going to show up some serious noise issues.

Canon have done that because megapixels sell. To the uninitiated and beginners, an 18MP camera will always look better than a 10.1MP camera.
