My Canon 550D is about 4 months old. I will take it back to the shop if no one on here knows a fix.

When I take the Speedlite 270ex off the camera and try to use the in-build camera it says 'this function is not available',
The spitdlite isn't even attached to the camera. It's like the camera doesn't recognise the speedlite is taken off the camera.
The speedlite and camera is turned off before I remove it.

This is a intermittent problem. Today we went to my father in-laws. I only took the camera but the flash wouldn't pop up. Kept saying mode if not available while external flash is attached.
Came back just now. Tried again and the in-build flash popped up.

I have cleaned the shoe with a fine brush in case the was any grit/dirt on the connections.

Anyone got any idea what is causing this?

I think this is a known problem with the camera. Someone else may be able to give more detail, but I think it is to do with the pins in the hot shoe sticking so the camera thinks the external flash is still fitted.

Thanks guys. I'll have a look Rob to see if anything looks stuck down.

mine does it as well, but it does not bother me because i dont use the flash (i think i have only used it once)

Ok. Sound like a common fault. Nothing to worry to much about. I do use mine sometimes.

I've had it happen once or twice on my 450D. Just gently lift up the springy contacts on either side of the hotshoe and it should be fine :)

Cheers Harry. Being an intermittent problem it hasn't happened for 2 days now.
No I know what to do it's not so scary :)
