Yes
After 4 years of painful trying, I am finally purchasing my Canon 550D.
I'm 100% a 550D is what I want and need, and I've been trying to scout for the best deal. Previously I was going to get a kit lens, setting me back around £800 then I realised I might aswell just get the camera and get used to it (and basically establishing a photography 'style' before buying any lenses (otherwise I could buy a lens thats used for nature photography when I don't need it) so on..
I have found this deal on a website. It says it's a secure website and I'm aware it doesn't have a warranty. However, is there anything incredibly dodgy about this website that strikes anyone that's good with this sort of thing?

Without knowing where the deal is we can't comment, but many fake sites bandy words like safe and secure, when they're not.

Easiest thing is to use a reputable dealer, such as those who are linked to on CameraPriceBuster, Digital Depot or a bricks and mortar shop you can visit.

That's an idea, I might do that. Thank you :)

Ah, One big issue. They are all bodies. I need the 18-55mm lens.
I tell you what I've never found anything in my life as stressful as buying a camera!!

Well it does have a warranty according to the site, but I think you'll find it will be a grey import.

I would stick to well known and trusted retailers, this company is located in offices above shops opposite coventry railway station, along with about 30 other companies, so most likely it just has a warehouse and a small office space rented as a registered company office.

There are a lot of kits available. You have mentioned that your budget is at £800, have you thought of getting the Twin kit instead?

I have thought that, However, I'm wanting time before my course ends to use and get used to my camera. And at the moment I'm on around £400 and it's taken me weeks to save up because I'm doing it all by myself with my hard earned dosh
Many people have said just to get the camera and when I develop more of an idea about the types of Photography I'm going to be doing, then it's best to look and lenses :)

Hi Sophie. Yes it can be stressful, it took me months to decide what body to get after my 400D!

How about the High Street shops? Jessops have the 550D and kit lens for about £650?

Yeah I have looked around at Jessops and whatnot and I think I'm going to go for a mainstream and well known shop as it's better paying a bit more and getting a secure deal.
I saw a camera on either Warehouse Express or Curry's that was around £650 but maybe it's better going straight to Jessops.
I find it so frustrating when you think your getting a good deal and set your sights on that, and then find out it's a bit dodgy and really you going to have to pay more!
Be glad when this is over with haha :)

Hi Sophie

I'm not sure if I'm reading your post right here, but it looks as though your under the impression that if you just buy the camera body alone you'd still be able to take pictures before you decided which lens would suit you best?.

Im affraid the body alone is of no use without a lens, which is why you would be best going for a kit deal until you find your feet.

I know you said your 100% on the 550D but I would also suggest looking at the excellent Nikon D90 18-105 kit.

It's a better camera than the 550D and the kit lens gives you a little more scope.

Noo! Haha I know theres no lens with a body kit, and that was my initial problem. The reason why I don't look at Nikon's is simply because I have done all my course with Canon's and it's the shooting type that I'm used to :)

Thanks Rodman,
The cheapest is from Amazon, would you suggest buying off there, or paying an extra £20 from Warehouse Express?

amazon should be fine...

Make sure it is actually Amazon and not a market place seller though. I once ordered a Nikon D300 from amazon and it never showed up. The seller was a scammer and got banned from Amazon shortly after. Thankfully got the money back though.

The 550 is a brilliant camera but...do you need 18Mp? do you need full HD video? I would think that even with really critical examination the 500 would be give virtually identical results (particularly when using the kit lens) for about £200 less.

Yep thats what I meant, sometimes it says shipped from someone else.
You'll be fine with amazon, thier customer serivce is usually pretty good if you have problems.

Jessops will price match, I'm picking up (if all goes well) a 7D and grip on Monday and they have price matched the competition. As on g as it is a reputable dealer, online or store.

Brilliant, so you recommend going into Jessops and seeing what deal I can get, and slyly mentioning the fact that Amazon are slightly cheaper and see what they say?

The worst that can happen is they say no.
Always worth haggling.

Yeah, ok thanks guys, I'll let you know how I get on :)

A work collegue attempted to buy from the company you mentioned (JOAG)...after many, many weeks he eventually got his money back.

They deducted the full amount from his C/C then kept on giving excuses for not delivering the camera. After loads of emails (they didn't answer the phone) they phoned him and tried to sell him a more expensive upgrade.

I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole.

JOAG?
Which one was that again I can't remember?

And oo thanks for the advice, I don't know what I'd do without this forum :)
