Can anyone tell me what f stop is recomended for taking indoor pictures of my baby? Taken lots of pics setting it at f 1.8 and happy with some of the results but there are plenty of blurred shots too.
Using Cannon 550d with Canon 50 ,mm f.1.8,Thanks

Is it blurred because it's out of focus? because the focus is on the wrong point? or because of camera shake?

Impossible to know without samples. Post up a couple of examples with the settings you used and we can give some constructive improvements.. otherwise we can only guess :D

I would have thought the answer would have been given in your other thread regarding the same lens and camera  If you are still not sure about depth of field then perhaps check this online calculator out. http://www.dofmaster.com/dofjs.html

Using your Canon 550D you will want to keep your shutter speed faster than 1/80s to prevent camera shake. If you set the camera to Tv and Auto ISO you should get some shots.

If you post up a couple of images here we can look at the Exif and tell you where you may be going wrong.

At f1.8 the DOF will be quite small and if you're focussing and recomposing that might be the problem. Try stopping down and upping the ISO to give a wider DOF and that should help. If it doesn't check your shutter speed, also just for an experiment, try putting it on auto and see what the shots come out like.

The "Nifty Fifty" at f1.8 will be a little soft and the DOF at close quarters is very small but the lens sharpness improves a great deal from f2.2 onwards.

If shooting a baby etc you need to use centre focussing so I always aim at the child's eyelid so the AF can lock on.

It's no good trying to get a good focus on a cheek or forehead etc - in fact any smooth and almost featureless area will result in the lens "hunting" as it tries to find something to lock onto.

.

I also have the Canon 50mm f/1.8 and find that the Dof is really thin, and edge sharpness not great at f/1.8.
To help, I usually take photos at f/2.2 at least.
