Hey Guys. I already have the 50mm f1.4 which is a great lens, and Im looking at getting a second, cheap, low light fast lens.

Whats your views on the 50mm f1.8

Im finding them for as cheap as £67.00. Surely for that price they can't be very good quality.

Thanks :)

Run a search - there's loads of stuff about the on-going love/hate relationship people have with this lens. Basically, if you like 50mm and need f/1.8, it's a bargain. Search 'nifty fifty".

Why not consider a different focal length? The 85mm f/1.8 is an absolute corker of a lens and will give you an extra string to your bow. Not dirt cheap at around £290 from Kerso, but easy enough to sell on if you decide it's not for you.

if you have the 1.4 I dont see the point of buying the 1.8, I don't see what its going to give you.

If you want to stick with a prime why not look at the 85mm ? Granted it isnt as cheap as the 50mm 1.8..

If you were just looking to spend some money why not invest in a set of filters for your existing lenses ? I think this will be my next purchase.

The 50 1.8 is a true bargain. Feels terrible in the hand and is fairly soft wide open at 1.8 but gets truly sharp from 2.8 upwards IMHO. Having said which, why bother with two 50's if you've got the 1.4, get the 85 instead if funds allow.

Agree...

The 1.4 is much better than the 1.8. You are going to gain absolutely nothing. Save your money and put it towards a different lens with different focal length.
The only way you should go to the 1.8 is if you need some money and wanna sell the 1.4 but you will lose quality.

Agreed, can't see the point in buying the cheaper variant when you already have it's bigger brother... you would never use it. the 1.4 at 1.8 will be far sharper than the 1.8 at 1.8

The OP seems to be looking for the cheapest lens, maybe so it can be used where it's likely to be damaged or nicked?

Surely for that price they can't be very good quality.

The f/1.8 50mm is known for it's plasticky build and five blade aperture. You may be able to get an M42 manual focus lens and adapter with good build quality for the same sort of price.

The build quality leaves a lot to be desired, but optically it gives really good results.
You don't need one Gary, because the 50mm f/1.4 is a better lens all round. Save your money and put it towards a different focal length lens.

Up until f/2.8 the 1.8 lens is very soft. I try to avoid using it below this aperture because too much fine detail is lost. From f/2.8 to 4.5 things improve greatly and at f5-5.6 sharpness (both edge and centre) are as good as anything the f/1.4 can achieve.

It is a great value lens which will do a reasonable job in low light, but pixel peepers may want to avoid full-open.

I wouldn't get another 50mm lens unless you need a direct backup because this is what you shoot at 90% of the time

for what you seem to like, gigs and weddings the 85mm might be quite long on a cropped body
I quite like my sigma 30mm which becomes more or less 'standard'
great for gigs as if you're up close it gives you some more space
it would work well in the studio too

what about the siggy 30 f1.4 or the canon 85 1.8

for cheap the 50 1.8 is pants but cheap so depends on what you want

Send a PM to Kerso on here and ask for a price list :D

I have one and they are good, but i use it on an EOS 3 film body and a 30D.

It can make a 30D almost a pocket camera if I take the grip and sigma 24-70mm f2.8 off and put a nifty fifty on!

It's all relative to what you are doing as well, the 50mm f1.8 is no where near as intimadating as a bloody great big Zoom lens if doing street photography for example.

As you have 50mm 1.4 don't think u need a 1.8 version
But 1.8 version really is a bargain to buy!
You might want it as it is a lot lighter than the 1.4
But for me, I would go to a 85mm 1.8!
