Yes
I already have a 50mm and have just taken delivery of an 85mm F1.8 Canon telephoto.
With the comments on a variety of forums about how good the 85mm is, I was expecting it to completely annihilate my nifty. To prove the point either way, I took some photos at a variety of F stops of the same subject, with the camera mounted on a tripod for stability.

And yes the 85mm was better, but not eye poppingly so. Infact I had to really do some serious pixel peeping to spot the differences.

Has anyone else found the same?

Right now, I'm looking it returning it to the seller for a refund (was an internet sale).

the 50mm 1.8 is already superb, the resolution tests put that lens right at the edges of current sensor technology anyway. But then it's easy to make a 50mm lens, for reason I don't understand :)

The 85mm obviously has better range and this is harder to achieve optically with such high resolution.

Not too sure why you bought it if you didn't want that length!?

The IQ of the 50 f1.8 is top notch due to it being a simple design of lens. The 85 excells in AF speed because of its usm motor. As you've discovered there would be very little difference in terms of IQ.

I always liked the 50mm, but I've found a much higher level of consistency with my 85mm, and the bokeh always seem a fair amount better.

Maybe I just didn't have the best quality 50mm...
