So I received my new lens today, and it's all kinds of wonderful, compared to the kits lens. This is my first prime, and I have to say that it's really, really nice.

On a lens like this, what kind of subjects would you suggest I look at?

Same as any other lens...pretty much everything, but the main purpose IMO of have a fast lens like that, is simply making use of the f1.4.

No point shooting everything at 2.8, when you can use 1.4.

As long as you can fit it in the frame you can take a picture of anything :D

It's strength is the wider aperture and you can use that for keeping your shutter speed up and/or your ISO down in low light or for taking shallow DoF shots.

Personally I found 50mm a bit tight on APS-C but pretty good for taking shots of... specific things... as I said, as long as they fit in the frame :D

PS. As you have a xxxD the max shutter speed will be??? 1/4000? This may limit you to a max aperture of something like f2.8 in good light so if like me you want to shoot with wide apertures in good light (and why wouldn't you?) you may want to buy yourself a ND filter to bring the shutter speed down to something the camera can handle, my 20D and 5D have a max shutter speed of 1/8000 and at f1.4 it's easy to exceed 1/4000 and even hit 1/8000.

Ha! Indeed...I'm erring more towards either nature photography, flowers, etc or street stuff. I like to capture people just going about their daily business, but I'm a little worried that the fixed lens might make people think I'm weird being so close to them to take a shot.

With 50mm on APS-C I don't think you'd be all that close to them, but as someone once said... if your pictures aren't good enough, you're not close enough.

I wonder whether I can just get right in their faces and whisper gently "excuse me, I just need to take this...hold still please". Do you think they'd freak, or would that be acceptable?

I used to be worried, but now it doesn't bother me. Ask for permission with children, but with adults I just shoot. If people say anything, I just tell them I'm a street photographer and let them see the images. In 5 years I've only had one person want them deleted. And probably one in 20 say anything at all. Get some cards printed, you can hand them out. Makes you look less suspicious.

I shoot 50 , 85 and 135 full frame, soon be moving down to 35 as well.
