Canon 50mm f/1.8 - can you use lens hood with a filter?

I think I may have just made a small mistake!!

I just bought a 52-58mm step up ring so that I can use a 58mm CPL on my nifty fifty, but I was also looking at getting the ES-2 hood.

I've just noticed that the hood uses a little adaptor that screws into the filter thread!! Meaning I wouldn't be able to use the CPL with it!!

Is there any other way (i.e. a different hood that may fit the bill) or should I just buy a 52mm CPL? I'm not too bothered about the step up ring as it only cost £4.50.

OK, so I seem to have caused a little bit of cross talk between my lens hood threads - sorry!! I'll keep this one topic with just the nifty fifty. I've read around and it seems a 52mm filter is useable with the official hood, so

I have two options:

1. Buy a Canon ES-62 hood for £15, and a 52mm Kood CPL for £15 (same seller as step up ring I bought so could cancel order)

2. Buy a 58mm screw in rubber hood for around £7.50 and use this with my step up ring that I've ordered and my 58mm Tiffen CPL

The second option is obviously the cheapest, but will I see any problem using a step up ring and 58mm hood on the nifty? Would it cause vignetting where a 52mm hood wouldn't?

Shouldn't have any problems with option 2 but you might with option 1, although vignetting with a 50mm on an APS-C body is unlikely - even with (effectively) 2 filters stacked.

OK thanks, I think I'll go with the cheaper rubber option then.

I do like to have OEM things, but it's hassle here as I'd have to get another filter, etc and probably unnecessary expense.

I'm curious as to why you suggest that option 1 may be a problem though? Surely this would be how Canon intended the use of the lens/filter/hood?

As you add filters to the front of the lens, you're adding to the risk of the filter mounts causing vignetting. As I said, it's unlikely to be a problem on an APS-C DSLR but can be a problem on FF (and film) bodies.

I realise that, but there'll be a filter added with either option, just that one uses a bigger filter and step-up ring - which is what I thought could add to vignetting.

I'm sure it'll be fine on the nifty anyway, but I was thinking in general.

i wouldn't worry about using a hood with the 50mm 1.8, the front element is fairly well recessed into the lens as it stands. never found it to be a problem.
