I had the 50mm F1.8 before, and as much as it was good for the money, it has since broken (AF is back focusing), and I don't want to keep buying them, so I've been looking at the slightly studier options, and have limited it down to the Canon 1.4 or the Sigma 1.4

Having read the reviews, and looked at the picture comparisons I'm still at a bit of a loss, the Sigma seems to have some focusing issues? Both seem very sharp over F2, and about £50 in it (more for the Sigma)

Any thoughts or suggestions before I venture out to Digital Depot? :)

I just upgraded my 50mm 1.8 to the 50mm 1.4 and i am very happy.
I also thought about the sigma, but i decided some time ago to always try and stick with canon if i can afford it.

The Sigma gets some good reviews though.

I have the canon 1.4 and cant fault it.

Im curious, did the fault with your 50mm 1.8 happen to appear when you got the 50D or was it ok on the 50D from day 1?

Hi. Keep in mind that Sigma AF 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM, is a EX DG lens so, the better they have. Canon counterpart must be L series. The vignetting in canon 0.8@1.4 and 0.63 in Sigma (see photozone). I hope this help.

Hi, I went from an f1.8 mkI to an f1.4 more because I had the opportunity than because of any downsides with the nifty. It feels like more lens, it looks like more lens and, of course, it cost more.

Depending what other lenses you have which come close to the length and the use to which you intend to put your 50mm I still think the smart money is on the f1.8, especially in mkI metal mount form.

I know what you mean, but in this case the Sigma is more...

Seemed to be OK at first, not really sure when it went wrong to be honest!

I have the 24-70 L so can do the focal length, but using 1.4 - up to 2.8 is where I'd get a lot of use from it :)

Canon 50 purchased... They had sold the Sigma before I turned up, so it made the choice a little easier! lol

Thanks for the replies :)

Dave.
