canon 50mm 1.8 vs 24-70

Hi, im thinking purely for studio work, is there much advantage to the 24-70 over the 50mm1.8?
would i notice a lot of difference on a 5Dmark1?
 
Try the £80 one and sell it on for £70 if it ain't up to the job and you'll only need another £700 to grab the 24-70!!

I use the little 50mm to suprise my students who are trying to do indoor natural portraits with the f5.6 end of a consumer zoom. it's a great little lens but the serious option is the f1.4 sigma. John
 
i use a nikon, but im sure it translates to canon anyway.

i had a 50 1.8...then i got my 24-70 and never used the 1.8 again.

i sold it as i now dont need it. low light capability will be excellent with 5d anyway with the 24-70.

poss best to see how you get on with the 50mm as its cheaper

but i think 24-70 is a great range for studio work
 
I had a play with a 50mm 1.8 and a 24-70mm today on a 5D Mk2 - both great lenses but both totally different beasts. One is £100, one is £800.

The 50mm is a top lens, if a little plasticky (good optics though), but it's fixed. The shallow DOF is great though.

The 24-70 is a very, very, very good lens; in fact it's probably one of the best I've used on any system on any camera - it's truly brilliant. But it offers so much because of the zoom, even with the slower max aperture, which shouldn't really be a problem in the studio with controllable light.

Get a 24-70 if you can afford it; if you can't, don't go near one because you'll be pining for one for the rest of your life... ;)
 
yep, I never use my 50mm since i bought a 24-70 either, it's a completely different beast. The 50 is a good lens for 80 quid though.
