As the title says... BUT I already have both. ;) So im just having a sort through and considering selling one. Without doubt the 100mm is the least used in my bag, but im just breaking into portraits so am wondering whether to sell the 50 or 100. Of course the ideal option is to keep both, but just for a moment assume you HAD to sell one, which would it be?

For info the other lenses I have are the 24-105 f4L and 70-200 f4 IS all on a 5dii body.

What are your thoughts?

50 1.4 for me.
The 100 has many uses, the 50 really only has 1.

Id sell the 100mm, your other 2 lenses cover this range (albit not at 2.8) whereas 50mm is only covered by your 24-105 at f4, so having 50mm at 1.4 is a big difference IMO
What he said, unless you ever shoot macro.

I have both (Nikon) and I use them and love them both. If you are not doing any macro keep the 50

Sell the macro & buy some tubes - then you'll have macro on your 50mm - or sell them both and buy tubes and a 85mm f1.8 :D which is a excellent portrait lens on the 5d2

I have both those lenses. I haven't used the 50mm f/1.4 yet at all. Got some great pics with the 100mm f/2.8 L though. It's fantastic for portraits.

So I'd definitely send the 50mm f/1.4 up the road.

Which of the 100mm Macros is it?

Crikey thanks for the replies people! Its the non L 100mm Lewis.

Paul you make an interesting suggestion... sell both and get a 85 1.8 people? What are we thinking here...? *off to read reviews*

Ooh I love the 85, my favourite portrait lens.

I have read that Neil, but to be honest there is not enough difference between the Canon and the Sigma to warrant me selling my current 50 and buying that one is there.

Sorry I think you are wrong again Neil. Beer at lunch = WIN! ;)

i sold my 100mm macro and got a 85mm and extension tubes, all my lenses are now macro and i have a faster portrait lens that's good quality, lighter in the camera bag and a nice addtion to the 50mm.

Damn you people!! I'm already on flea bay looking for an 85, and even considering the 1.2's!! And this was supposed to save me money!!!

If not doing Marco I'd say sell the 100mm. 1.4 is handy if is doing indoor stuff but as you have a 5d mkII then its much less of an issue as you can use high ISO without noise being an issue.

I would sell the 100mm 2.8 and buy the 85 1.8 if you are getting in to portraits. Between that and the 50mm you should be covered..

Or if you have the shooting space and the money you could get a 135L instead of the 85 1.8 :)

In the interest of full disclosure I should add that I have never used any of these lenses - i am however considering buying the 50 1.4 (will probably go with sigma for better build quality) and the 85 1.8 (I am on crop for now so i think the 135 will be too long for me).

-but subsequent events can go horribly wrong.

Very much my setup with a couple of zooms for my lazy days. Not that I am thing to tempt anyone on what they should be buying.
