You must have heard this question before. Afriend of mine wants to get a new SLR, he does not have any lenses yet so he is starting his kit, and he can not seem to be able to decide which one to get.
Personaly I have the D300 and I am very happy with it, he has tried both and loves them both and it is a hard choice for him to make.
Any recommendations?
Thanks

I'd choose the D300 again, but really there's little to choose between them image quality wise. Certainly nothing that wouldn't be cancelled out by lens choice, tripod, technique or artistic merit.

It'll come down to system choice. Nikon have the better flash system for some choices.

Canon has the MP-E 65, which Nikon can't beat (except with unwieldy bellows.)

Nikon have an unbeatable 14-24 lens, amongst some others.

For comparable lenses, Canon are normally cheaper than Nikon, plus they have mid price range options Nikon don't (70-200 f/4 for example.)

What style of photography is he tempted to do? If you two are willing to share lenses in future that might make or break the deal for him.

If he's happy with both then toss a coin, it's folly to go spending £1000+ on a camera just because someone on a forum says it's the one to have. He needs to way up the pros and cons of each camera and each system himself and just go and buy one or t'other....

I'd pick (and did pick) the 50D.

Although, if he does get the Nikon you can share lenses... ;)

Good advice.

There are a couple of other areas where the systems aren't quite comparable. Canon offers a good range of very fast primes (24mm f/1.4 L, 35mm f/1.4 L, 50mm f/1.2 L, 85mm f/1.2 L) and Nikon doesn't. Canon also offers a number of telephotos (300mm f/4 L IS, 400mm f/5.6 L, 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS) which are superior to Nikon's. Admittedly these are all quite specialist - none of them will leave you much change from £1000. But if your friend is considering spending that much on a body, then I guess these sorts of lenses might be in scope depending on his interests.

As Blapto mentioned it may be a good idea if he heads down the Nikon route with you, then you can buy lenses that complement each others kit? This is why I went Canon when with film I was always Nikon, although we're not swapping kit as much as we thought we would to be honest - but it did mean for example that I could borrow his flash for a week when I had to do some indoor portraits for work.

This is worth more than you could imagine actually. The ability to borrow kit from my friends (and also to lend it) has helped me loads - even if its only for me to eventually buy whatever it is I like using, I get to try out loads of kit!

Cheaper than hiring it

I have been telling him that the D300 has more usefull features like the backfocus adjestments for all your lenses and the creative lighting system with the built in wireless comander, faster frame rate with the grip etc etc
